Margaux 70x30x27 freestanding oval cast iron bathtub with burnished finish also from Waterworks. Tile behind vanity is 12x12 sheets of statuary marble, split faced and stacked. Floor tile is 18x18 Calacatta Gold set on a diagonal. Wall field tile behind the tub is Waterworks #ARF036 3x6. Base is Architectonics 6x6 style #ARBS3E also from Waterworks. Photography by Jim Tetro This house, built in the 1960s, sits southfacing on a terrific wooded lot in Bethesda, Maryland. The owners desire a whole-house renovation which would improve the general building fabric and systems, and extend the sense of living out of doors in all seasons. The original sixties-modern character is preserved and the renovation extends the design forward into a contemporary, modern approach. Connections to and through the site are enhanced through the creation of new larger window and door openings. Screened porches and decks perch above the sloped and wooded site. The new kitchen and bathrooms allow for opportunities to feel out-of -doors while preparing, cooking, dining, and bathing. Smart passive strategies guide the environmental choices for this project, including envelope improvements, updated mechanical systems, and on-site stormwater management.

A soft aqua blue and metallic gold wallcovering wraps this serene master bathroom. Antique brass hardware adorning the cream cabinetry adds lustrous sheen. Sitting atop the ivory tiled floor is a distressed black Chippendale bench covered in a knot-inspired print of greyed aqua and green.

White and gold geometric wall paper pops against the marble-look porcelain tile, black quartz counters and brass accents. The black framed shower enclosure creates a modern look. Balance between dark and light are the cornerstone of this master suite renovation. Floor-to-ceiling Statuario marble speaks eloquently as it meets obscure wallpaper in this main bathing area and water closet. Soaking in the lavish free standing tub is certain, as is the natural light flooding in from the windows. Separated by privacy glass door, these two spaces are tied together. Along with Konrady & Son Construction, we transformed the master suite, eliminating the soaking tub and replacing it with a fully custom walk-in shower complete with a Rohl rainfall showerhead and frameless glass door. With functionality resolved, we needed a style direction and for the art-loving clients with bold taste, a classic, French-inspired scheme was an obvious choice. The vanity (not pictured) was designed around the client’s vintage chair and art deco pendant hanging above.
