As LED lighting has become more common, here are a few things to consider when purchasing LED lighting bulbs: If your existing lighting is controlled by dimmers, be sure to use dimmable LEDs. You might have to replace your existing dimmers with LED compatible dimmers. (Tip: some dimmable LEDs don’t work well even with dimmers rated for use with LEDs.) Forget about watts used. Look at the lumen output. Lumens indicate how bright the light will be. Color, or color temperature, indicates whether the light is “cool” (more blue) or “warm” (more yellow). Lower Kelvin (K) temperatures cast a warmer light, higher K temperatures are more cool. Many of our customers find 2700K to 3500K the most comfortable range. The other number to look for on LEDs is the CRI, or Color Rendering Index. This number indicates the quality of the light. On the CRI scale of 0 to 100, incandescent and halogen lamps are generally considered to have a CRI close to 100. Look for LEDs with a CRI close to 100. Not all LEDs are designed to be installed in enclosed fixtures. Check the packaging to make sure the LEDs you plan to use in an enclosed fixture are intended for that use.

This dining spaces began with the family’s inherited dining table, etagere, and dresser (turned into a buffet). We then designed around the colorful art that was to be displayed in this room. The bubble light fixture adds a touch of whimsy and color while the teal velvet chairs bring a welcoming warmth. The white walls allow the art to take center stage and cools the color temperature that surrounds this room.

Storage galore in a custom vanity from our Luxor Collection line. Lower cabinet drawers help the homeowner utilize and access all the space in the vanity. An LED mirror with adjustable color temperatures provides ample light.

Front view of this intricate aluminum standing seam metal installation on an eclectic craftsman-style residence in Milford, CT. Multiple layers of asphalt shingles were removed from this roof, revealing many deteriorated planks which had to be replaced to bring the roof deck back to sound condition. We then covered the entire roof with high-temperature Ice and Water Shield and installed and flashed three new Velux skylights above the rear sunroom. We then installed Englert 1300 standing seam aluminum in Hartford Green, a color choice that really fits in with the craftsman style and color of the home.

This 5 ft. area between dining room and entry hall/foyer serves primarily as a bar. Glassware is housed in 42" cabinets with mullion frame doors, crown molding, and variable color temperature LED lighting on the interior, under the cabinets, and behind the crown to illuminate the upper wall and ceiling. These lights are dimmable, in addition to being adjustable for the desired white wavelength. Bottle storage is maintained in the base cabinets that flank both sides of a sink.
