This is a case study of a client living in Barcelona, Spain. The client's residence is a 150-square-meter home. The client's preferred style is a mix of modern and rustic country, predominantly featuring white, black, and wooden tones, complemented by colorful decorations. The client's objective was to find a pendant light for the dining area that would align with the bohemian and country farmhouse style of her dining room. With a dining table and chairs crafted from natural wood, she wanted the lighting to perfectly complement the overall ambiance of the dining space. We selected this round, wicker pendant light for her, as it harmoniously matched the desired style. With a lighting coverage of up to 15 square meters, and considering the generous size of the client's dining area, we recommended that she purchase two pendant lights to ensure ample illumination. Upon receiving the products, the client expressed her satisfaction with how well the pendant lights aligned with her requirements. When you love something and you realize after years, you’ve inadvertently put that away, a good designer will help you bring that back out. That was Turnstyle’s responsibility here with this recent client project: bring back the joy of spending time in a home library. This space is precious to me, because I’ve known it for all the many years I’ve been working on this home. It sits proudly in the center of the house, greeting people upon entry, and, in my opinion, was a jewel box ready to receive its shine. We blew through a wall to allow it a more spacious entrance, helping anyone who visits to immediately see the stunning on-the-lake view. I applied custom wall to wall antique glass to each wall, floor to ceiling, to enhance the view, make the walls feel like they fall away, and also reflect all the now beautiful art and furniture pieces as part of its new design. Influences from things gathered, stunning reworked furniture from the 1970s and all around functional hero items, allow for better working. The main push residing in really enabling quality time there. This space is open is now refreshing and full of beautiful objects and memorabilia. This custom-built residence was our client’s childhood home, holding sentimental memories for her. Today as a detail-oriented Dentist and her husband, a retired Sea Captain, they wanted to put their own stamp on the house, making it suitable for their own unique lifestyle. The main objective of the design was to increase the Puget Sound views in every room possible. This entailed some areas receiving major overhaul, such as the master suite, lesser updates to the kitchen and office, and a surprise remodel to the expansive wine cellar. All these were done while preserving the home’s 1970s-era quirkiness.

Found object lamps often come with a story. The Neuman Chimney Cleaner is a most clever invention intended to simplify chimney cleaning. The compacted cleaner is suspended from two ropes and lowered down the chimney in its closed form. Pulling up on the control rope causes the prongs to spread, while using the other support rope raises and lowers the cleaner to scrape the chimney walls. Age of this one in unknown, but Orin Neuman of Wittenberg, WI received the original patent in 1930. In 1988, the Schaffer Brush Manufacturing Company in Waukesha, WI acquired the patent rights. The repurposed ceiling light features included twin clear tubular bulbs and a mechanism to set and lock the flair to suit the intended space. Height is approximately 23 inches, with variable flair from 11 x 7.5 to 18 x 15 inches.

The Yin-Yang House is a net-zero energy single-family home in a quiet Venice, CA neighborhood. The design objective was to create a space for a large and growing family with several children, which would create a calm, relaxed and organized environment that emphasizes public family space. The home also serves as a place to entertain, and a welcoming space for teenagers as they seek social space with friends. The home is organized around a series of courtyards and other outdoor spaces that integrate with the interior of the house. Facing the street the house appears to be solid. However, behind the steel entry door is a courtyard, which reveals the indoor-outdoor nature of the house behind the solid exterior. From the entry courtyard, the entire space to the rear garden wall can be seen; the first clue of the home’s spatial connection between inside and out. These spaces are designed for entertainment, and the 40 foot sliding glass door to the living room enhances the harmonic relationship of the main room, allowing the owners to host many guests without the feeling of being overburdened. The tensions of the house’s exterior are subtly underscored by a 12-inch steel band that hews close to, but sometimes rises above or falls below the floor line of the second floor – a continuous loop moving inside and out like a pen that is never lifted from the page, but reinforces the intent to spatially weave together the indoors with the outside as a single space. Scale manipulation also plays a formal role in the design of the structure. From the rear, the house appears to be a single-story volume. The large master bedroom window and the outdoor steps are scaled to support this illusion. It is only when the steps are animated with people that one realizes the true scale of the house is two stories. The kitchen is the heart of the house, with an open working area that allows the owner, an accomplished chef, to converse with friends while cooking. Bedrooms are intentionally designed to be very small and simple; allowing for larger public spaces, emphasizing the family over individual domains. The breakfast room looks across an outdoor courtyard to the guest room/kids playroom, establishing a visual connection while defining the separation of uses. The children can play outdoors while under adult supervision from the dining area or the office, or do homework in the office while adults occupy the adjacent outdoor or indoor space. Many of the materials used, including the bamboo interior, composite stone and tile countertops and bathroom finishes are recycled, and reinforce the environmental DNA of the house, which also has a green roof. Blown-in cellulose insulation, radiant heating and a host of other sustainable features aids in the performance of the building’s heating and cooling. The active systems in the home include a 12 KW solar photovoltaic panel system, the largest such residential system available on the market. The solar panels also provide shade from the sun, preventing the house from becoming overheated. The owners have been in the home for over nine months and have yet to receive a power bill.

Modern Citi Group helped Jane in remodeling her alcove studio in Midtown East. This comprehensive renovation project included a full remodel of the bathroom and kitchen, as well as updates to all rooms and closets. The primary objective was to modernize the apartment while aligning it with the family's lifestyle and needs. The design challenge was to deliver modern aesthetics and functionality while keeping the project within budget. The construction team completely revamped the kitchen, which featured new two-tone cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, elegant Vivid White quartz countertops, and Aria tile backsplash and flooring. Kitchen design finishes echoed the ones in the bathroom creating a cohesive modern look. Bathroom remodel included converting the tub to a shower, installing a modern wall-mounted vanity, and replacing all fixtures. The shower area showcased an accent black & white Astoria wall tile, perfectly complemented by the subtle stone-looking Aria Ice porcelain tile on the floors and walls in the rest of the bathroom. In just eight weeks, Jane and her family received a beautifully renovated, modern apartment with a cohesive style and finishes that fit their lifestyle and expectations.

When you love something and you realize after years, you’ve inadvertently put that away, a good designer will help you bring that back out. That was Turnstyle’s responsibility here with this recent client project: bring back the joy of spending time in a home library. This space is precious to me, because I’ve known it for all the many years I’ve been working on this home. It sits proudly in the center of the house, greeting people upon entry, and, in my opinion, was a jewel box ready to receive its shine. We blew through a wall to allow it a more spacious entrance, helping anyone who visits to immediately see the stunning on-the-lake view. I applied custom wall to wall antique glass to each wall, floor to ceiling, to enhance the view, make the walls feel like they fall away, and also reflect all the now beautiful art and furniture pieces as part of its new design. Influences from things gathered, stunning reworked furniture from the 1970s and all around functional hero items, allow for better working.
