Relatives spending the weekend? Daughter moving back in? Could you use a spare bedroom for surprise visitors? Here’s an idea that can accommodate that occasional guest while maintaining your distance: Add a studio apartment above your garage. Studio apartments are often called mother-in-law apartments, perhaps because they add a degree of privacy. They have their own kitchen, living room and bath. Often they feature a Murphy bed. With appliances designed for micro homes becoming more popular it’s easier than ever to plan for and build a studio apartment. Rick Jacobson began this project with a large garage, capable of parking a truck and SUV, and storing everything from bikes to snowthrowers. Then he added a 500+ square foot apartment above the garage. Guests are welcome to the apartment with a private entrance inside a fence. Once inside, the apartment’s open design floods it with daylight from two large skylights and energy-efficient Marvin double hung windows. A gas fireplace below a 42-inch HD TV creates a great entertainment center. It’s all framed with rough-cut black granite, giving the whole apartment a distinctive look. Notice the ¾ inch thick tongue in grove solid oak flooring – the perfect accent to the grey and white interior design. The kitchen features a gas range with outdoor-vented hood, and a space-saving refrigerator and freezer. The custom kitchen backsplash was built using 3 X 10 inch gray subway glass tile. Black granite countertops can be found in the kitchen and bath, and both featuring under mounted sinks. The full ¾ bath features a glass-enclosed walk-in shower with 4 x 12 inch ceramic subway tiles arranged in a vertical pattern for a unique look. 6 x 24 inch gray porcelain floor tiles were used in the bath. A full-sized murphy bed folds out of the wall cabinet, offering a great view of the fireplace and HD TV. On either side of the bed, 3 built-in closets and 2 cabinets provide ample storage space. And a coffee table easily converts to a laptop computer workspace for traveling professionals or FaceBook check-ins. The result: An addition that has already proved to be a worthy investment, with the ability to host family and friends while appreciating the property’s value.

Industrial transitional English style kitchen. The addition and remodeling were designed to keep the outdoors inside. Replaced the uppers and prioritized windows connected to key parts of the backyard and having open shelvings with walnut and brass details. Custom dark cabinets made locally. Designed to maximize the storage and performance of a growing family and host big gatherings. The large island was a key goal of the homeowners with the abundant seating and the custom booth opposite to the range area. The booth was custom built to match the client's favorite dinner spot. In addition, we created a more New England style mudroom in connection with the patio. And also a full pantry with a coffee station and pocket doors.

The CORRIDOR BAR is the perfect cocktail of style and function. The double louvered doors open fully, providing easy access to everything that a stocked bar needs. The cabinet offers racking space for wine bottles and storage for a host of liquor bottles on shelves and doors. A wooden stemware rack keeps wine glasses within easy reach and other shelves provide storage for glasses, tumblers and other supplies.

As the home for the headmaster of an independent high school, it is also considered a school asset as a facility for visitors. Formal details define the public rooms that accommodate school functions. A ground-floor guest suite hosts campus visitors. The catering-quality kitchen, like a hinge, connects the intimate living quarters to formal spaces. The heart of their family sanctuary is the great room just beyond the kitchen. The headmaster holds occasional student classes in his living room, connecting students to this campus legacy. He and his wife can see the front door of the main building from his upstairs window. Boundaries between public and private life are sensitively articulated throughout.

At the edge of bustling pockets of towering trees, there are mangroves for miles, hosting a litany of vibrant flora and fauna. This home is perched along the edge of the bay, with a front row seat to the hustle and bustle of the daily activities of the wading bird community, with the occasional kayak streaming by. The front of the home has a series of planters and porch that help terrace the massing up to the elevated floor level. The main spaces of the home face out the back through wide glass doors, over the pool, terraces and dog lawn. Intricate exterior architectural millwork and mouldings recall the passive ventilation and simple ornamentation indicative of the British West Indies style architecture.

The small guest bedroom had to accommodate the couple's home office, their large collection of books, and the occasional sleepover guest. We designed custom wraparound built-in bookcases as well as a semi-concealed drop-down platform-bed that folds down to fit a full mattress. When not hosting guests, the space is a quiet, comfortable reading nook & home office separate from the rest of the open-plan apartment. The Manhattan skyline, vintage furniture and decor (including the husband's model airplane collection) take center stage.

A broad mix of chairs lends a playful note to the dining table, which Kiel designed and built out of reclaimed barn wood. Its straightforward construction with exposed fasteners bespeaks of the material's rustic origins. A bench under the window provides flexible seating for entertaining guests. A simplified floral arrangement and some bunting give the room a kick of color proving that spare, yet selective treatments can still add a welcoming touch to a space.
