Catch-all Storage Closet Transforms into Elegant Wine Cellar It was a typical unused space with bare studs and exposed insulation located at the base of the lower level stairs, next to the mechanical room. The entire lower level floor is covered with multi-color slate which contained in-floor heat. This posed a problem for the new wine cellar. The challenge was overcome by placing a layer of foam insulation with a vapor barrier over the slate floor, walls, and ceiling. Then, a plywood subfloor was glued in. A wall space vented into the adjacent laundry room was created to house a cooling unit, which maintains a perfect temperature within the wine cellar. The location of this wine cellar was a wonderful opportunity to create a showpiece that could be viewed from the upper level. An old fashioned store front, complete with two large windows and a faux painted shingle roof, was designed and built to draw attention and allow the viewer to see inside. Tami found a wall mural of an authentic wine cave and had it sized to fit the side wall of the new wine cellar, providing an illusion of continuing space and setting the tone of what was about to come. A rustic wood floor and a tongue and groove barrel ceiling, faux painted to resemble brick, were installed - all coinciding with the wall mural. Custom cabinetry filled the interior, holding wine bottles and boxes of such. A copper sink was inlayed into a wood counter top. Faux painted bricks highlight an oiled rubbed bronze faucet and a leaded seedy glass cabinet above is designed to hold various types of scotch whiskey. Ambient lighting enhances the cabinetry while a rustic mini chandelier hangs from the center of the barrel ceiling. This once “catch-all” storage closet is no more. A small, old world wine cellar has emerged and now, is quite a show piece.

Designed specifically for roll in access, this 9' x 8' bathroom (true dimensions 8.75 x 7.5) delivers the specific accessibility needs and incredible style to match the rest of the home. Open shower space and tiled floor sloped to the drain create a wet room of sorts and avoids barriers to entry. What we love: - Large stylish tile on shower walls complement beautifully with glass accent tile and smaller format floor tile and add overall warmth to the room. - Niche recessed shelving in shower for both seated showering and standing showering. - Plumbing diverter and hand-held fixture allow flexibility of seated and standing showering. - Grab bars are functional and yet blend in with other oil rubbed bronze fixtures. - Frosted glass partitions shower to contain water spray but allows light from window through small bathroom, helping to make it feel larger. - Creative angle of short wall allows for plumbing for overhead shower spray but also creates a sense of division of shower space even while allowing full access.

The kitchen combines matte finish countertops and slab doors, with accent slimline metal accent cabinet door fronts. White high gloss glass back splash tiles offer a stark contrast with the more muted tones and textures and creates interesting light paly in the space. The dual tone counters each have waterfall edges on all sides continuing to clean and well-defined lines. The sitting area counter color brings in warmth, which pulls in the natural wood floors and also adds a new layer to the otherwise stark white and stainless-steel kitchen. The Miele appliance package is perfect partner for the modern kitchen. Hidden storage solutions throughout the kitchen keep the counters clean and clear of clutter. There is breakfast cabinet that hides blenders, juicers, and coffee makers. Pull outs racks contain all spices, oils and stove top utensils. Pull out pantry trays and extra deep drawers hold all the pot, pans and daily goods.

For years, early morning walks past this 1910 Craftsman in Houston's historic Avondale neighborhood left the new owners with lingering fantasies of making it their future home. When it became available, they acquired a home rich with history, but one nearly abolished. The home was once inhabited by Texas Governor (1931-1932) and founder of Humble Oil, Ross Sterling. But, renovations subdivided the home into multi-family rentals and destroyed original finishes. The developer driven modifications were abruptly halted by city red tags in 2018 after original windows were demolished and replaced with vinyl substitutes. With a nearly clean slate on the interior, the HRDD renovation aims to be respectful to the original context while providing coplimentary modern surprises atypical to the era. One such example is a new opening that punctures through the second floor, extending to a roof skylight. Situated at the transition between formal and informal rooms on the first floor and common space on the second floor, this subtraction is lined with a scalloped wood screen. The screen is one of multiple moments within the home where texture will combine with minimal white surfaces, providing a backdrop to the owners' collection of antique Indian furniture pieces. Additionally, a new detached replaced an existing dilapidated garage apartment and contains the owner's photography studio. Windows and a skylight are placed to capture coveted north light, ideal for photographing and editing. The main room remains an austere slate, with ceiling vaulting to a single aperture to create a dynamic moment that carries a dialogue to the opening in the main home.

With the Indigo bedroom Quax offers a wide range of furniture with a long-lasting use in mind. Without any worries because where necessary these pieces of furniture were tested by internationally recognized authorities for EN-716 for cots and EN-12221 for changing tables. In order to achieve this Quax uses durable materials, for example no chipboard but high-density Mdf, well-known for its intrinsic stability and strength. These boards meet the strict E1-standard regarding formaldehyde emission. Do not forget that natural wood too contains formaldehyde. We support durable forestry and ask our suppliers to submit the PEFC and FSC certificates. Special care also goes to the furniture fittings. Only reputable suppliers provide us with, among others, quality slides for the drawers and reliable connecting techniques, including particular attention for eccentrics, necessary for connecting parts which have a great supporting power. Quax does not use self-rotating screws because they obstruct the dismantling and re-assembly of furniture. The lacquer finish also gets our full attention : we only work with international quality suppliers such as Akzo Nobel and not with local producers. These suppliers are responsible for the certificates for their products, for example EN 71-3 with attention for the migration of harmful components. Design also plays an important role in the business philosophy of Quax. For the Indigo bedroom for example the bars are milled out in the Mdf board, which does not only contribute to the fancy nature of this range but also to the sturdiness of the side-frames, not comparable to tradional bars. The undercarriage has been given special attention and is made of solid beech, which makes colour differences possible, depending on the tree’s habitat. They reflect the richness of the natural product and must therefore be regarded as normal. The frame’s finish with a quality oil may emphasize these shade differences. The charm of the natural patina is the guarantee of the natural product. The cots can be converted into bench, something which your toddlers will certainly appreciate. Taking a holistic approach to the space, we moved the doorway to the garage first and created a new entrance with a mini-mud room with shelving and catch-all space that helps contain clutter as people enter the home. With the doorway removed from the center of the kitchen, we were also able to create an expansive countertop run with the zinc hood and blue range centered in the space for an ideal work zone.
