For all of the perimeter plantings that this garden had when we first visited the site, it felt exposed with very little privacy. The existing outdoor spaces were virtually nonexistent and hence, went unused. The stairs from the house to the garden were rickety and unattractive doing nothing but transport guests from the inside to the out. As with all of my gardens, the operative goal was Sanctuary in all of it's forms. Creating the sacred from the secular, making the cold and uncomfortable into the warm and inviting. The lot on which this garden was built is one filled with sharp angles that go unnoticed on a conscious level but come into sharp focus when all of the layers are stripped away. My first and most obvious solution was to pour custom circular pads that transport the client and her friends from area to area as if one is jumping from lily pad to lily pad. Small enough in spaces to transport a guest from area to area, large enough to hold a car, the exposed aggregate pads blend in with the multicolored Del Rio pebbles used throughout the garden. A tropical extravaganza, this garden is now the epitome of seclusion and privacy right in the middle of Venice, California.

This design-build renovation focused on His and Hers Bathrooms.
In His Bathroom, Empire City Construction exclusively designed this vanity to resemble a piece of furniture while housing a steam generator for the shower. One side of the vanity had fully operational drawers, whereas the other side had a hidden hinged door with roll-out drawers made to fit around said generator. The walls and floor of this room feature porcelain tile accentuated by a quartz countertop, bench, and shower curb.
In Her Bathroom, we combined limestone tile with a custom built vanity finished by a quartz countertop and tub deck surround. An 8’ custom door features a full size 8’ mirror seamlessly. The dimensions of her bathroom were larger than the typical 5’ x 7’, in accentuating that aspect, minimal materials and a muted color palette complimented the open and airy feel of the space.

The renovation of an extensive linear residence and site facing Port Orchard waterway embraces water, greenspace and forested hillside. The home, completed this fall, serves as an artist’s studio, galleries, family space, game room, outdoor living areas and peaceful retreat.
New interiors and exterior spaces and finishes, cabinetry, lighting, paving, landscape and courtyards become settings for the owner’s art + collections, three-generations of family and the wonderful colors and textures of the land + water.
Inside, a monumental central stair and tapered two-story tall red cedar and steel column was designed as the residence’s entry focal point and internal landmarks, guiding the visitor’s eye to the main atrium…. and upward. Heavy wide-flange steel moment frames support the house and enable whole walls of glass. Rough, mill-finished steel contrasts refined cabinetry, stone, wood structure and defining dropped ceilings, reflecting the opener’s love of the tension between highly polished and detailed + rough, found art.
Outside, A new southern “dining room” was designed for warm summer evening gatherings under a heavy-timber trellis. The focus, opposite water and island views, is a metal perforated screen. The final screen is composed of the lyrics from a Joe Cocker song of great meaning to the owners, cut from ½” marine bronze, set into dark-fired brick. “Oh My Darling, Be Home Soon….”
Natural daylight and high-efficiency lighting are central players as in any gallery. From a high clerestory and extensive southern and eastern window-walls to carefully selected up-lighting, pendants, and accent fixtures, Rhodes Architecture + Light worked closely with the owner to ensure that their dark existing house would become one filled with light…. night and day.
The owners, Ken and Jane, allowed us to interview them about their experience working with Rhodes Architecture + Light, and how they are feeling about living with the architecture today.
What was your experience like, working with Rhodes Architecture + Light?
“They worked with us because it was a remodel, an existing thing, and we had to try to make it work for all of our interests and how our family operated. They listened, and we listened, and it was a great communication back and forth.”–Jane
How has the renovation changed the way you live and enjoy your home?
“I remember saying to them that I want the whole floor heated because it gets so chilly down here. And we had the wood burning stove, but it was over there and now we just turn the floor heat on and we can come down. It’s cozy and nice. So we’re looking forward to winter now.”–Ken
“We have 5 kids together and now a bunch of grandchildren. I wanted a marble countertop, but there’s just no way. I didn’t want it to be a place where I had to say, ‘No, no, no. Wipe up your drink, do this, do that.’ I wanted it to be a place where everybody can come with all the kids, and we make a big mess, and I can clean it up. And we can enjoy ourselves here, because that room upstairs, we almost never went in. And now we’re in there eating pizza and watching the game.” –Jane
As an artist, Jane enjoyed the collaborative process.
“I can’t believe it was as positive as it was. I went into it thinking it would be a great, creative, fun, collaborative thing, and I have to say, with our architects, it was. I like that creative process. I always say when I am doing a painting, it’s a series of problem solving so it wasn’t unusual for me. I am completely blown away by them and had fun with that part of it.” –Jane

Inspired by the charm and unhurried rhythm of the French countryside, this commercial restaurant project in Kazakhstan brings the essence of Provence to an urban setting. Rachelle Design Lab focused on creating a light-filled, airy atmosphere that invites guests to relax and linger.
Key Design Features:
Spatial Planning: The layout features diverse seating zones, from cozy booth arrangements along the panoramic windows to dynamic center tables, ensuring a comfortable experience for both large groups and intimate dining.
Texture & Palette: The design relies on a fresh, authentic palette: white-washed wood cladding on structural columns and the bar counter, paired with soft French-blue seating and natural oak tables.
Atmospheric Details: Lush biophilic elements seamlessly divide the space, while thematic decor—including vintage-style posters, decorative wall plates, and lavender accents—completes the Mediterranean narrative.
The result is a highly functional commercial space that successfully marries operational efficiency with a warm, romantic aesthetic.

In this 90's cape cod home, we used the space from an overly large bedroom, an oddly deep but narrow closet and the existing garden-tub focused master bath with two dormers, to create a master suite trio that was perfectly proportioned to the client's needs. They wanted a much larger closet but also wanted a large dual shower, and a better-proportioned tub. We stuck with pedestal sinks but upgraded them to large recessed medicine cabinets, vintage styled. And they loved the idea of a concrete floor and large stone walls with low maintenance. For the walls, we brought in a European product that is new for the U.S. - Porcelain Panels that are an eye-popping 5.5 ft. x 10.5 ft. We used a 2ft x 4ft concrete-look porcelain tile for the floor. This bathroom has a mix of low and high ceilings, but a functional arrangement instead of the dreaded “vault-for-no-purpose-bathroom”. We used 8.5 ft ceiling areas for both the shower and the vanity’s producing a symmetry about the toilet room door. The right runner-rug in the center of this bath (not shown yet unfortunately), completes the functional layout, and will look pretty good too.
Of course, no design is close to finished without plenty of well thought out light. The bathroom uses all low-heat, high lumen, LED, 7” low profile surface mounting lighting (whoa that’s a mouthful- but, lighting is critical!). Two 7” LED fixtures light up the shower and the tub and we added two heat lamps for this open shower design. The shower also has a super-quiet moisture-exhaust fan. The customized (ikea) closet has the same lighting and the vanity space has both flanking and overhead LED lighting at 3500K temperature. Natural Light? Yes, and lot’s of it. On the second floor facing the woods, we added custom-sized operable casement windows in the shower, and custom antiqued expansive 4-lite doors on both the toilet room door and the main bath entry which is also a pocket door with a transom over it. We incorporated the trim style: fluted trims and door pediments, that was already throughout the home into these spaces, and we blended vintage and classic elements using modern proportions & patterns along with mix of metal finishes that were in tonal agreement with a simple color scheme. We added teak shower shelves and custom antiqued pine doors, adding these natural wood accents for that subtle warm contrast – and we presented!
Oh btw – we also matched the expansive doors we put in the master bath, on the front entry door, and added some gas lanterns on either side. We also replaced all the carpet in the home and upgraded their stairs with metal balusters and new handrails and coloring.
This client couple, they’re in love again!

This commercial renovation at 3020 Lincoln Avenue in Coquitlam involved a targeted tenant improvement for a professional notary office. The scope focused on modernizing the interior environment to create a calm, welcoming, and functional client reception area while maintaining durability and code compliance standards required for commercial spaces.
New commercial-grade flooring was installed throughout, paired with updated lighting to enhance brightness and improve overall spatial clarity. The layout was optimized to support client flow and privacy, while finishes were selected to reflect a clean, professional aesthetic appropriate for a legal services environment.
Executing renovations within an active commercial setting requires structured scheduling, material coordination, and strict adherence to strata and municipal requirements. Arani Construction delivers commercial tenant improvements across Coquitlam and the Greater Vancouver area with an emphasis on organization, technical precision, and minimal operational disruption.

The Home
The Cahill exudes traditional charm with horizontal siding, barn shutters and rocking chair front porch, while the family-focused
floorplan offers plenty of room for a growing family with multiple entertaining spaces. At centerstage, an open-concept design connects the kitchen with large a island to the adjoining dining and family rooms. A corner fireplace in the family room adds appeal without diminishing the sense of space, while well-placed windows allow for plenty of natural light. Excellent use of space continues upstairs with the owner’s retreat separated from two secondary bedrooms by a large walk-in closet and conveniently positioned utility room. An upstairs retreat offers another informal family gathering area with the flexibility to create distinct spaces like a playroom, media room and more. Ideal for growing families, The Cahill also boasts an unfinished basement, prime for a fifth bedroom, third full bathroom and spacious game room.

KAI also selects finishes like flooring and furnishings to create one-of-a-kind homes for buyers!
The Interior Design
The Cahill’s façade sets the tone for the interior color palette with traditional charm and neutral hues. The cozy feel begins with popular soft brown, laminate, wood-like flooring throughout the main living areas that offer a contrast to off-white walls. Soft gray kitchen cabinets are highlighted by white, brick-laid tile for visual interest against the sleek, quartz countertops. Warm wooden tables and furnishings with clean lines create an inviting space with hints of a trendy farmhouse design. This cozy feeling continues on the upper and lower levels with warm, neutral, marled carpet to soften the spaces. A real memory point can be found in the Super Shower of the owner’s retreat bathroom with white tile in a diagonal diamond pattern, lending an air of cleanliness and tranquility to the space. The pure, clean perfection of this home provides a blank canvas for homeowner’s artwork and accents.

This Glencoe kitchen remodel brings modern conveniences to a classic home. The client for this kitchen remodel wanted to take their outdated kitchen with mismatched fixtures to the next level. To accomplish the homeowners’ dreams, we built a symmetrical island and a centered cooktop with an oversized stainless steel hood. The three decorative sides of the island feature no visible hardware and touch latch operation to retain its sleek lines, further accenting the focus on updated style and function.
To make this kitchen remodel complete, we installed Cambria quartz countertops, acid etched glass wall cabinets, a hidden paneled fridge/freezer combo, and a recessed coffee machine to maintain the clean aesthetic without sacrificing functionality within the space. The kitchen also features a linear aqua glass tile backsplash that creates color contrast for a compelling focal point. Custom storage cabinets with wide two-door access, spinning lazy Susan shelves, and extra wide shelf storage round out this modern kitchen remodel in Glencoe.
