A few incongruous boxwoods were removed and replaced with a shaped pieris and swordferns to mark the corner.

A wood privacy screen separates the hinoki tub from the toilet. A bamboo privacy screen serves as a foil for a small Zen garden outside the windows of the tub area.

Even if low, the plantings help frame the entrance. Flowers provide pollen and nectar for insects and butterflies. Grasses and seed heads provide food and nesting materials for birds. And, once established, these plants are far more economical in terms of water than the lawn that used to be there.

We tweaked her favorite teal hue to fit the existing elements better, and adjusted it to a slightly lighter value that would not feel so "heavy". In order to not overwhelm the small space, we decided to only paint the upper cabinets in the teal.

A steel retaining wall helped transform a boring, suburban, sloping front lawn into a level, walkable plane with ample room for the new owner's extensive collection of potted plants and garden art. It also turned an often slippery approach to the side- and backyard into a generously dimensioned and safe pathway. The large sculptural frames serve both as a mode of screening from the street, and as shelves for pots and decorative elements. The space below the new wall was planted with some favorite trees, agaves and sun-loving perennials.
