I jokingly call this the 'Duck Garden'. The Japanese maple is the Mother Duck, with the little Thuja ducklings in tow. The rounded form of the maple inspired this planting. The Thujas are underplanted with Saxifraga 'Maroon Beauty' which will send up frothy waves of white blooms in spring.

The barely visible red brick entrance set the color scheme for these front plantings, echoed with red maples, barberry and more. In winter, the deciduous, variegated red twig dogwood alters its cool persona, and provides a cheerful color echo against the conifers.

Inspiration for a contemporary landscaping in Portland.

The placement of the slabs took some adjusting and tweaking to get right. The idea was to emulate the trail of mineral debris left after the retraction of the Great Ice. Many thanks to my installers who displayed endless patience with my artistic antics.

Flowers in blues, purples, pinks, and reds were favorites, so we focused on covering the ground with various long-blooming varieties, mixed with evergreen shrubs.

With limited floor space, go vertically. Metal screens with vines divide the spaces. Winding flagstone paths narrow and widen to allow for seating/dining areas. Spaces are separated by densely planted beds.
