From skiing in the Swiss Alps to water sports in Key Biscayne, a relocation for a Chilean couple with three small children was a sea change. “They’re probably the most opposite places in the world,” says the husband about moving
from Switzerland to Miami. The couple fell in love with a tropical modern house in Key Biscayne with architecture by Marta Zubillaga and Juan Jose Zubillaga of Zubillaga Design. The white-stucco home with horizontal planks of red cedar had them at hello due to the open interiors kept bright and airy with limestone and marble plus an abundance of windows. “The light,” the husband says, “is something we loved.”
While in Miami on an overseas trip, the wife met with designer Maite Granda, whose style she had seen and liked online. For their interview, the homeowner brought along a photo book she created that essentially offered a roadmap to their family with profiles, likes, sports, and hobbies to navigate through the design. They immediately clicked, and Granda’s passion for designing children’s rooms was a value-added perk that the mother of three appreciated. “She painted a picture for me of each of the kids,” recalls Granda. “She said, ‘My boy is very creative—always building; he loves Legos. My oldest girl is very artistic— always dressing up in costumes, and she likes to sing. And the little one—we’re still discovering her personality.’”

My clients were looking for form and function but not just form, they were looking for a Statement, a design that was unique, original, "Out side the Box". A style that reminded them of the modern architecture and design from their previous overseas residence.

This was the last stage of this remodel. Client was eager to change out the green carpet he had throughout the house. While working on that, we decided to upgrade the staircase as well. Having dark tile in the kitchen and very light walls in the rest of the house, we agreed on doing dark floors. Our maple stairs are stained to match the luxury vinyl plank flooring, which turned out to look fantastic with the golden carpet we have upstairs. It is safe to say that final design of stairs and flooring matches client's vintage furniture and rugs that he's collected over the years of travel and work overseas.

We had the privilege of helping missionaries in the Black Forest area of Germany get settled in their new space. THDesigns got to help them place their furniture in a welcoming way that improved the usability of the very small space. We helped her place new throw pillows she had ordered and shipped overseas from IKEA, placed the beautiful artwork she had painted of her home in South Africa, and used her lamps and accessories to create a warm cheerful inviting space for them to call home. This was one of our favorite projects ever!

Custom made copper patina chandelier. Tim Ferrie/Lightsculptures created this custom chandelier for a customer in the UK. The client was thrilled with the result and here it is hanging in his home. A beautiful complement to the wood beams and reclaimed wood bookcase. www.tjferrie.com

Maolin Li, a young entrepreneur based overseas purchased a 1.5 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo at The Residences at the W Hollywood to serve as a home away from home during his frequent trips to Los Angeles. With a few weeks until his next visit, Maolin enlisted Cantoni LA designer, Kyle Spivey to transform the empty space into a stylish, move-in ready home all in time for his stateside arrival.
To create a warm and welcoming urban oasis to suit Maolin’s jet-setting lifestyle, Kyle repainted the walls and adorned them with custom wallpaper, framed the windows with drapes and outfitted each room with customized furnishings and high impact art and accessories.
Check out what Kyle had to say about the design process as well as what inspired him along the way on the Cantoni Blog here: cantoni.com/blog/2015/03/stylish-hollywood-pad-w-hollywood/
