This family in Markham with grown children wanted to transform their backyard into a low-maintenance retreat for recreation and entertaining. With hardscapes reducing maintenance, perimeter areas feature flowers and shrubs to add colour, texture and soften the look. (16 x 32, rectangular)

A lush garden pathway continues the curves, leading to a circular outdoor amenity at the far end. It comprises a half-circle mirror, a free-standing cylinder basin, a globe wall light, and an arched door. The outdoor amenity was intentionally designed to be open, with screening from climbing plants on steel wires and timber posts, with potentially a translucent fabric in the future, to create a more cost-efficient yet utilitarian space by eliminating the need for walls.

While less densely built than Altadena or the Palisades, most of the foothill-adjacent neighborhood's historic mid-century homes sit within 100-200 feet from one another. With this proximity, one home's wildfire protections will impact the safety of each neighbor.

Through collaboration with the resident, Good Earth designed and installed this beautiful traditional landscape that brought "a sanctuary" to the owner’s backyard with the use of a new high 8’ horizontal fence, dogwoods, Japanese maples, a new deck with a fire pit filled with crushed colored glass.
