Hillcrest Construction designed and executed a complete facelift for these West Chester clients’ master bathroom. The sink/toilet/shower layout stayed relatively unchanged due to the limitations of the small space, but major changes were slated for the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal. The bathroom was gutted completely, the wiring was updated, and minor plumbing alterations were completed for code compliance. Bathroom waterproofing was installed utilizing the state-of-the-industry Schluter substrate products, and the feature wall of the shower is tiled with a striking blue 12x12 tile set in a stacked pattern, which is a departure of color and layout from the staggered gray-tome wall tile and floor tile. The original bathroom lacked storage, and what little storage it had lacked practicality. The original 1’ wide by 4’ deep “reach-in closet” was abandoned and replaced with a custom cabinetry unit that featured six 30” drawers to hold a world of personal bathroom items which could pulled out for easy access. The upper cubbie was shallower at 13” and was sized right to hold a few spare towels without the towels being lost to an unreachable area. The custom furniture-style vanity, also built and finished at the Hillcrest custom shop facilitated a clutter-free countertop with its two deep drawers, one with a u-shaped cut out for the sink plumbing. Considering the relatively small size of the bathroom, and the vanity’s proximity to the toilet, the drawer design allows for greater access to the storage area as compared to a vanity door design that would only be accessed from the front. The custom niche in the shower serves and a consolidated home for soap, shampoo bottles, and all other shower accessories. Moen fixtures at the sink and in the shower and a Toto toilet complete the contemporary feel. The controls at the shower allow the user to easily switch between the fixed rain head, the hand shower, or both. And for a finishing touch, the client chose between a number for shower grate color and design options to complete their tailor-made sanctuary.

Bedroom - eclectic guest bedroom idea in Chicago with white walls

Switching from a nursery to a toddler room can be challenging. We moved into our new house when my son was about one year old, crawling and walking like a champ. So it was my chance to make the switch. My usual process is figuring out the main colors first, well this time it was different since I had already few furniture pieces. Before we moved in I bough the beautiful Atlas Tapestry from Urban Outfitters which set the tone for the room. I was lucky enough to find turquoise curtains and storage bins from Ikea. I couldn’t stay away from Land of Nod so I had to get the Touch Tone Wall Hanger and the Grand Canvas USA Map. I got the growth chart from Etsy, there are a plenty of options and you can even get a personalized decal monogram.

FOCUS The main focus of the room is the 12 foot long x 4 foot high elevated bed. The bed is the focal point of the room and leaves ample space for activity within the room beneath. A secondary focus of the room is the desk, positioned in a private corner of the room outfitted with custom lighting and suspended desktop designed to support growing technical needs and school assignments. STORAGE A large floor armoire was built at the far die of the room between the bed and wall.. The armoire was built with 8 separate storage units that are approximately 12”x24” by 8” deep. These enclosed storage spaces are convenient for anything a growing boy may need to put away and convenient enough to make cleaning up easy for him. The floor is built to support the chair and desk built into the far corner of the room. GROWTH The room was designed for active ages 8 to 18. There are three ways to enter the bed, climb the knotted rope, custom rock wall, or pipe monkey bars up the wall and along the ceiling. The ladder was included only for parents. While these are the intended ways to enter the bed, they are also a convenient safety system to prevent younger siblings from getting into his private things. SAFETY This room was designed for an older child but safety is still a critical element and every detail in the room was reviewed for safety. The raised bed includes extra long and higher side boards ensuring that any rolling in bed is kept safe. The decking was sanded and edges cleaned to prevent any potential splintering. Power outlets are covered using exterior industrial outlets for the switches and plugs, which also looks really cool.

Our team’s primary objectives were to fill space with natural light, period architectural details, and cohesive selections throughout the main level and primary suite. At the entry, new archways are created to maximize light and flow throughout the main level while ensuring the space feels intimate. A new kitchen layout along with a peninsula grounds the chef’s kitchen while securing its part in the everyday living space. Well-appointed dining and living rooms infuse dimension and texture into the home, and a pop of personality in the powder room round out the main level. Strong raw wood elements, rich tones, hand-formed elements, and contemporary nods make an appearance throughout the newly renovated main level and primary suite of the home.

Because this was a rental kitchen, we were limited in what we could do, but knew that it need some major sprucing! We changed the whole feel of the kitchen by switching out all of the pulls for ones with some color and detail, and by painting the "backsplash" with chalkboard paint for easy cleaning and writing of recipes etc. We installed simple ikea racks for additional storage, and put a vintage inspired "ICE" decal on the freezer for a playful touch.

This fun kid's bath features Emser 12x24 Perspective tile with a marble penny round mosaic. The marble pencil keeps the look polished and the handheld and double niche are practical touches.

Inspiration for a large timeless master carpeted bedroom remodel with beige walls

Many homeowners have their own ideas about how light or dark their home interiors should be. Some folks love nothing more than sunny, light-filled rooms. Other people adore their comforting, softly-lit spaces. While light levels can be a matter of personal preference, lighting can also be a powerful tool for shaping the mood, emotional tone and usage of every room. In fact, lighting is just as important as furnishings. Lighting Tips 1. Stay Warm Cool light looks brighter to the eye and can seem more like daylight. It can also make your home feel like a hospital or grocery store, which is not what we’re going for. Warm light is softer and creates a more relaxed mood. That’s what you want in your home. 2. Yes, You Can We’re big fans of can lighting. These in-ceiling lights draw zero attention to themselves while creating a foundation for excellent interior lighting. We add lamps for emphasis and mood in particular areas and put everything on a dimmer switch (see #3). This formula gives you maximum flexibility. 3. The Great Dimmer What did people do before the dimmer switch was invented? We suspect they shielded their eyes or huddled together in the dark because there was nothing inbetween. We use dimmer switches everywhere except the bathroom. Controlling the level of every light in your home allows you to create the right mood for the moment every time. 4. Beam Me Up We’re head over heels in love with this stunning raw wood beam wrapped with light bulbs on cords. Flip one dimmer switch and all the lights go on, at the exact intensity level you choose. While low light may be flattering, people tend to err on the side of too little light, rather than too much. Turn up that dimmer a notch more than you would normally and you may like what you see. THEME A passion for sports that never grows up, never grows old and never tires is at the heart of this room. Designed as a den/office for a radio sports talent who’s life work revolves around stats, scores, free agents and athletes, the room ensures that its owner is surrounded by the teams and games he loves, with room for storage, a desk, a computer station and some personal accents. FOCUS Four baseball stadium seats procured from the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, repainted with a faux wood grain look and personalized with each member of the family’s name give the room a true sports feel. Favorite team jerseys as well as team logos — painted tan to match the overall look of the room — highlight the space. Large wall towers divide the room into three distinct spaces. The central area houses two TV monitors and a hidden computer system, while the other two areas display oversized family photos in sepia tone prints and custom, matching frames. The towers, which provide storage, were purchased at Pottery Barn, and already in the room. To make them more functional, height was added to bring them to the ceiling, and the room’s crown molding is taken around each tower’s top to create a seamless flow. STORAGE The creation of the towers gives the room plenty of useful storage, including display areas, multiple shelves, and a place to hide computer accessories and office supplies. GROWTH The room can easily change over time as new sports memorabilia and family photos are added or switched out. The back of this house was reconfigured to create one large open space. The old kitchen was relocated from the center of the space to the far end, switching locations with the dining room.
