For this classic San Francisco William Wurster house, we complemented the iconic modernist architecture, urban landscape, and Bay views with contemporary silhouettes and a neutral color palette. We subtly incorporated the wife's love of all things equine and the husband's passion for sports into the interiors. The family enjoys entertaining, and the multi-level home features a gourmet kitchen, wine room, and ample areas for dining and relaxing. An elevator conveniently climbs to the top floor where a serene master suite awaits.

This kitchen is a display for an Abt Appliance showroom and includes ten appliances and two hoods within a relatively small footprint. Custom Amish-made cabinets integrates all appliances into a warm and inviting living space. The cabinets were painted using an old-school brushing technique that softens the appearance of an all-white kitchen, and a combination of frameless and inset styles was called upon to give a vintage feel while maximizing space. 1″ thick doors and drawer heads were specified to give the cabinetry a deeply carved presence. Dark stained walnut was selected as an accent color in the open areas above the ovens and refrigerators and behind the curved mullion glass doors. Where possible, matching wood fronts were made to camouflage and conceal the dishwasher, warming drawer, and built-in refrigerator and freezer. The tile backsplash creates a cohesive look with three very distinct focal points. The field tile is consistent, but the areas behind the cooktop, range, and sink show a unique detail. The marble tile floor with a basket weave centerpiece ties the cabinetry and wall tile together. Countertops are cambria in Torquay color, which mimics the appearance of Carrara Marble but has the physical characteristics of quartz material. The edge was built up to 6 centimeters and features an edge detail designed to mirror the routing on the cabinet doors.

ZeroEnergy Design (ZED) created this modern home for a progressive family in the desirable community of Lexington. Thoughtful Land Connection. The residence is carefully sited on the infill lot so as to create privacy from the road and neighbors, while cultivating a side yard that captures the southern sun. The terraced grade rises to meet the house, allowing for it to maintain a structured connection with the ground while also sitting above the high water table. The elevated outdoor living space maintains a strong connection with the indoor living space, while the stepped edge ties it back to the true ground plane. Siting and outdoor connections were completed by ZED in collaboration with landscape designer Soren Deniord Design Studio. Exterior Finishes and Solar. The exterior finish materials include a palette of shiplapped wood siding, through-colored fiber cement panels and stucco. A rooftop parapet hides the solar panels above, while a gutter and site drainage system directs rainwater into an irrigation cistern and dry wells that recharge the groundwater. Cooking, Dining, Living. Inside, the kitchen, fabricated by Henrybuilt, is located between the indoor and outdoor dining areas. The expansive south-facing sliding door opens to seamlessly connect the spaces, using a retractable awning to provide shade during the summer while still admitting the warming winter sun. The indoor living space continues from the dining areas across to the sunken living area, with a view that returns again to the outside through the corner wall of glass. Accessible Guest Suite. The design of the first level guest suite provides for both aging in place and guests who regularly visit for extended stays. The patio off the north side of the house affords guests their own private outdoor space, and privacy from the neighbor. Similarly, the second level master suite opens to an outdoor private roof deck. Light and Access. The wide open interior stair with a glass panel rail leads from the top level down to the well insulated basement. The design of the basement, used as an away/play space, addresses the need for both natural light and easy access. In addition to the open stairwell, light is admitted to the north side of the area with a high performance, Passive House (PHI) certified skylight, covering a six by sixteen foot area. On the south side, a unique roof hatch set flush with the deck opens to reveal a glass door at the base of the stairwell which provides additional light and access from the deck above down to the play space. Energy. Energy consumption is reduced by the high performance building envelope, high efficiency mechanical systems, and then offset with renewable energy. All windows and doors are made of high performance triple paned glass with thermally broken aluminum frames. The exterior wall assembly employs dense pack cellulose in the stud cavity, a continuous air barrier, and four inches exterior rigid foam insulation. The 10kW rooftop solar electric system provides clean energy production. The final air leakage testing yielded 0.6 ACH 50 - an extremely air tight house, a testament to the well-designed details, progress testing and quality construction. When compared to a new house built to code requirements, this home consumes only 19% of the energy. A whimsical application denoting man's static nature, the Naggar sculptures give visual play to the more serious tone of the room and its message. Metaphorically, man becomes subject to his environment and is spiritually and physically beset by the mechanization of time. The Samuel Marx console and its use of lucite is timely and appropriate. It is visually light, creating an almost invisible, airy appearance, functionally perfect for an entry gallery. The lucite handles relate to the foyer piece, mediating between the gallery and dining room. The parchment mirrors the soft/hard fragmentation metaphors at play. The window cornice also reflects the Art Modern period with it very modernist silver leaf pattern.

A continuous upholstered headboard extends behind the bed and into the mirrored side wall, making the sleeping area appear wider than its physical footprint. Pale wall panels, taupe bedding and compact bedside furniture keep the palette soft, while dark mirrored panels and black ceiling tracks add contrast.

The living room of this home in Denver featured three large transom windows. Transoms are windows that are located on the upper half of your wall. They are great for allowing extra light to enter the room but they do very little to enhance the physical appearance of the space. So we created these three stained glass panels with our signature aspen design to add character and style to the room. The windows cast your gaze upward, allowing you to take in the full height of the high ceilings and the entire design of the room.

Pools in streams and creeks have shapes defined by the physics of the channel. Notice this pool has a curvature to the left and it prepares to flow over the next waterfall. Natural streams often have many more elements than rocks. Logs and large tree branches blend elegantly and tell the story of a real creek. What you do not see here is a preponderance of rocks and boulders. Rocks create an annoying hard edge to waters. This stream is designed to appear soft. Very often we design so the eye cannot even pick out the edge of the water. The result is a much more soothing natural image.

Primarily English in style with French leanings, this manor boasts two grand outdoor scaled rooms with each centered on two separate lawns allowing the entire space to be visually and physically tied together. Custom cut stone was used to create a "green pathway" by allowing ground cover (or in this case, lawn) to exist between stepping pads, making the path appear to be "floating".

The stained glass panels for the doors were designed in prairie style fashion. This look was made popular in the early 1900’s by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
