To create some height in the otherwise flat garden, native Redbud trees were planted at the center of each square, and small step-stones were laid for easier access to care for the plantings within the boxwood-hedged flower beds. The pattern of the step-stones helped to reinforce the idea of quilted patches stitched into old-fashioned quilts.

This is an example of an eclectic drought-tolerant backyard stone landscaping in San Francisco with a fire pit.

Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) is a profuse bloomer. It's golden, sunflower-like blooms dance above its soft, gray-white foliage and leave these charming yellow stems when they retreat. It's tough and beautiful. Its dried resin is used as incense. It's excellent in the high desert - Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and Anza Borrego State Parks - and the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valley heat gives it no trouble.

Our homeowners wanted a garden with a natural feel. We added concrete steppers with dymondia groundcover for a new pathway to the backyard. Low water plantings with a natural feel bring hummingbirds. Drip irrigation and permeable paving. The nasturtiums are from seeds planted by the owner, the leaves are edible. Vegetable beds and fruit trees in the backyard provide a bountiful harvest.

Instead of bringing the outdoors in, this sun room brings the indoors out. A large sectional sofa, comfy chairs, and lots of pillows create the perfect place to lounge with a good book or play board games with friends during the warm summer days. A classic wood table and chairs add a touch of a rustic feeling while making the sun room the perfect place for family to gather for a meal. This outdoor room is now the number one spot in the house.
