This is a picture of the same Mission style fireplace mantle/surround shown below, except I decided to have some fun with it by taking a picture I took of the top of one of the legs and tiling the picture. I've been slowly but surely training this edible fig for nearly 20 years into the glorious espalier it has become. It's on the west facing exterior of my house in the sunny Mission District of SF. The stucco holds the heat and allows the fruit to get SWEET and juicy. Since i'ts on the sidewalk, it's quite the show stopper and conversation starter. In fact when I prune I schedule double the time I really need because the neighbors and passerby need to talk! I get endless compliments but also many stories from people about their grandmas or great uncles fig and associated memories.

This is an example of a small contemporary drought-tolerant and full sun front yard raised garden bed in San Francisco.
