KebonyM-S Pro Architects announce the completion of an indoor swimming pool in a state-of-the-art, single storey family home set in a picturesque location on the outskirts of Bratislava - one of Europe’s youngest capital cities. Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, was chosen to craft the ceiling of the swimming pool, which is designed to emulate rippling waves as well as for the terrace deck and structural beams.
Sustainability and a desire to recreate the close proximity often seen between wood and water in the natural environment were primary focuses in the design of this project. This led a requirement for a low maintenance wood, compatible humidity and with advanced durability, for the swimming pool ceiling. In addition, a high level of precision when cutting the wood was required in order to achieve the desired appearance of waves.
Supplied by Leading Market, Kebony was carefully selected for the pool ceiling, which consists of 490 lamellae of timber, due to its versatility, durability and environmental credentials. Kebony was also installed throughout the exterior of this property, both for the spacious outdoor terrace and the exterior and interior beams. One of the reasons to choose Kebony was the unified look of wood in all these different applications.
Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology uses an environmentally friendly process, which permanently enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural crop waste. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall with furfuryl alcohol, the wood gains greatly improved durability and dimensional stability, giving it characteristics similar to those of tropical hardwood. In creating a wood with comparable properties to tropical hardwood that can be grown in a FSC certified, sustainably managed forest, the demand for tropical woods is reduced, allowing timber to once again be an important part of sustainable construction.

Visual ThesisThe project designed by Plankontor B reimagines a former agricultural site into a residential complex, preserving the area’s architectural typology and materials. The design features three residential buildings and two walls enclosing a central courtyard, which will be developed into a green, community-focused space. The visualizations aim to capture the essence of daily life in the small town of Nauen, reflecting the harmony between the new development and the existing structures. They evoke the future atmosphere of the apartments, portraying the routine and intimacy that will unfold within these spaces once they are inhabited.

It was brought back to its nineteenth-century glory, with period American, English, and French furniture, while incorporating the state-of-the-art systems and amenities that a large family requires. For these clients’ discerning taste, Elizabeth found subtle, fine antique rugs, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings, sculptures, and prints. The dining room is an especially magical space, because a pièce de résistance was commissioned for it – hand-painted wallcovering panels portraying a verdant eighteenth-century scene is installed throughout the room and creates a calm, harmonious environment all its own. A gabled portico entry leads to the core of the home, which was the only portion of the original home, while the living and private areas were all new construction. Coffered ceilings, Carrera marble and Jerusalem Gold limestone contribute a decided elegance throughout, while sweeping water views are appreciated from virtually all areas of the home.
The light-filled living room features one of two original fireplaces in the home which were refurbished and converted to natural gas. For fans of entertaining, this home has a spacious, open layout that allows everyone to be included in the party. The family room and breakfast room both overlook the kitchen, so mealtime is always comfortable. The adjacent great room accesses the rear porch, as does the family room, and features a coffered ceiling and fireplace for additional luxury. Tray ceilings also crown the dining room, study/bedroom and master bedroom. French doors grace the entry into the study/bedroom and the nearby bathroom makes it an ideal guest suite. The master suite is an elegant retreat. Two generous walk-in closets provide space for large wardrobes and the master bath is the ideal place to relax.
JMJ Custom HomesThis home features a spacious living room portraying a cozy family style demeanor. The grey stone fireplace is the perfect accent to the room bringing that extra touch of texture to break up the light gray walls. The designer for this house referred to the style as "50 shades of gray" with all the different shades of gray throughout the home.
Advance Design Studio, Ltd.This clean cut kitchen stemmed from the design challenge to place a contemporary kitchen in a traditional Tudor style house in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. Our client was a self-described city person living in the country - who wanted an urban contemporary feeling incorporated into her home. She says she waited many years to find the right design team who understood her vision!
Not wanting to ignore the beautiful 50 year old oaks outside her window, Advance Design transformed her traditional kitchen into an urban kitchen utopia with the use of texture and earthy finishes keeping with the feel of the existing home. Dura Supreme Bria frameless cabinets with a soft pillowed door works to incorporate a woodsy feel in shades of grey textured foil appropriately called “Twig”. Aluminum framed opaque glass doors are hinged with a lift up Aventos hinge for a contemporary twist and a super-functional opening. Brushed nickel hardware in various sizes keeps with the clean line feel.
To keep the design organic and “fit it in” with the rest of the house, we covered the floor with a natural looking travertine porcelain laid on a 45 degree angle simulating a more traditional feel in a neutral tone of silvery-brown. The backsplash is clean and crisp with large Carrera marble tiles in a brick pattern, and a splash of energy from a vertical marble and glass mosaic accent. We then finished off the look with clean Cambria Torquay countertops portraying minimal patterning to keep the work surfaces feeling uncluttered and open.
Other areas of the home were addressed to “blend” the style in with lightly distressed grey tone hardwood floors and a “matching” renovated powder room displaying contemporary features to compliment the nearby kitchen’s style.
