Our friend Jenna from Jenna Sue Design came to us in early January 2021, looking to see if we could help bring her closet makeover to life. She was looking to use IKEA PAX doors as a starting point, and built around it. Additional features she had in mind were custom boxes above the PAX units, using one unit to holder drawers and custom sized doors with mirrors, and crafting a vanity desk in-between two units on the other side of the wall.
We worked closely with Jenna and sponsored all of the custom door and panel work for this project, which were made from our DIY Paint Grade Shaker MDF. Jenna painted everything we provided, added custom trim to the inside of the shaker rails from Ekena Millwork, and built custom boxes to create a floor to ceiling look.
The final outcome is an incredible example of what an idea can turn into through a lot of hard work and dedication. This project had a lot of ups and downs for Jenna, but we are thrilled with the outcome, and her and her husband Lucas deserve all the positive feedback they've received!

This newly built custom residence turned out to be spectacular. With Interiors by Popov’s magic touch, it has become a real family home that is comfortable for the grownups, safe for the kids and friendly to the little dogs that now occupy this space. The start of construction was a bumpy road for the homeowners. After the house was framed, our clients found themselves paralyzed with the million and one decisions that had to be made. Decisions about plumbing, electrical, millwork, hardware and exterior left them drained and overwhelmed. The couple needed help. It was at this point that they were referred to us by a friend. We immediately went about systematizing the selection and design process, which allowed us to streamline decision making and stay ahead of construction.
We designed every detail in this house. And when I say every detail, I mean it. We designed lighting, plumbing, millwork, hard surfaces, exterior, kitchen, bathrooms, fireplace and so much more. After the construction-related items were addressed, we moved to furniture, rugs, lamps, art, accessories, bedding and so on.
The result of our systematic approach and design vision was a client head over heels in love with their new home. The positive feedback we received from this homeowner was immensely gratifying. They said the only thing that they regret was not hiring Interiors by Popov sooner!

Nautical-themed hybrid swimming pool with raised spa, sunshelf, slide, grotto, and pizza oven
(September 2013) – Ask the Pool Guy and his team at Legendary Escapes recently unveiled the newest Legendary Escape, a stunning nautical-themed hybrid swimming pool. The hand-carved concrete waterfall, rock slide, and grotto are the focal point of this incredible project, and designer and builder Al Curtis has truly outdone himself this time. Behind the waterfall sits a grotto that seats 8-10 people comfortably. The waterfall, slide, and grotto area come complete with intricate details and additions that perfectly play into the project’s theme. An immense amount of creativity, talent, and skill is required to take ordinary materials like vinyl and concrete and turn them into the outstanding backyards that Curtis creates, but these details allow his creativity to shine in a different light. Curtis immerses himself completely in just one or two projects at a time, which allows him the opportunity to add those intricate details that take his extraordinary projects to the next level. Some of the details in the grotto area of this hybrid project include real ship portholes that open and close, as well as carvings and lanterns to add visual interest inside of the grotto.
The project also includes a raised spillover spa and a sunshelf with a bubbling water feature. The sunshelf has steps leading into the main body of the pool, giving swimmers an easy entry point if they don’t feel the urge to jump off the top of the waterfall or take a ride down the hand-carved, hand-tiled slide. The shelf has just enough water to allow shallow wading or lounging, and the pebbled finish provides a perfect place to set a lounge chair without worrying about damaging the vinyl liner. With the spa nearby, this whole end of the pool is perfect for relaxing, talking, or watching the kids while they swim.
This incredible hybrid swimming pool also includes a poolside pizza oven, so fresh, stone-fired pizza is never far away. The brick oven can cook a pizza in about 90 seconds, and produces authentic, outstanding pizzas. The homeowners have spent years perfecting their pizza crust and sauce recipes, as well as growing their own tomatoes and basil. The pizza oven adds another element of their own personality, and makes this project even more perfect for them. With a built-in countertop, it’s easy to get a couple of pies going at one time, or to prep ingredients for personal pizzas.
The homeowners are very family-oriented and love to have friends and family over to their home. During the construction process, the Legendary Escapes crew met several friends and family members who stopped in for some quality time and to check out the progress of the pool. The finished product is a perfect place for entertaining, and it feels very comfortable and welcoming. With the sunshelf, spa, grotto, poolside seating, and the pool itself, there are plenty of different places to sit or soak and have conversations or splash around.
Curtis is incredibly proud of this project, and he has high hopes for it. He was recently named a Master of Design by Pool & Spa News for a hybrid swimming pool he built in Brighton, MI. This new, nautical hybrid pool fits in beautifully with his portfolio, but also stands out as extraordinary. The team at Legendary Escapes anticipates positive feedback and recognition for this project, and looks forward to building more swimming pools that push the envelope and wow clients and fans.

This expansive outdoor deck and garden is the ultimate in luxury entertaining, lounging, dining and includes amenities for shade, a vegetable garden, outdoor seating, outdoor dining, grilling and a glass enclosure with heaters to get the most enjoyment and extended use year round.
Rooftopia incorporated multiple customized Renson pergolas into the central dining and lounge areas. Each of three Renson pergola systems and their unique features are controlled with the touch of a button. The motorized overhead louvers can be enjoyed open or fully closed to provide shade and a waterproof cover. Each pergola has integrated dimmable LED lighting in the roof blades or louvers. The seating and lounge area was designed with gorgeous modern furnishings and a luxurious fire table. The lounge area can be fully enclosed by sliding glass panels around its walls, to capture the heat from the fire table and integrated Renson heaters. A privacy and shade screen can also be retractable at the west to offer another layer of protection from the intensity of the setting sun. The lounges also feature an integrated sound system and mobile TV cabinet so the space can be used year round to stay warm and cozy while watching a movie or a football game.
The outdoor kitchen and dining area features appliances by Hestan and highly customized concrete countertops with matching shelves mounted on the wall. The aluminum cabinets are custom made by Urban Bonfire and feature accessories for storing kitchen items like dishes, appliances, beverages, an ice maker and receptacles for recycling and refuse. The Renson pergola over the dining area also integrates a set of sliding loggia panels to offer a modern backdrop, add privacy and block the sun.
Rooftopia partnered with the talented Derek Lerner for original artwork that was transformed into a large-scale mural, and with the help of Chicago Sign Systems, the artwork was enlarged, printed and installed as one full wall of the penthouse. This artwork is truly a special part of the design.
Rooftopia customized the design of the planter boxes in partnership with ORE Designs to streamline the look and finish of the metal planter containers. Many of the planter boxes also have toe kick lighting to improve the evening ambiance. Several large planters are home to birch trees, ornamental grasses, annual flowers and the design incorporates containers for seasonal vegetables and an herb garden.
Our teams partnered with Architects, Structural engineers, electricians, plumbers and sound engineers to upgrade the roof to support the pergola systems, integrate lighting and appliances, an automatic watering system and outdoor sound systems. This large residential roof deck required a multi year development, permitting and installation timeline, proving that the best things are worth the wait.

Kirk Bianchi created the design for this residential resort next to a desert preserve. The overhang of the homes patio suggested a pool with a sweeping curve shape. Kirk positioned a raised vanishing edge pool to work with the ascending terrain and to also capture the reflections of the scenery behind. The fire pit and bbq areas are situated to capture the best views of the superstition mountains, framed by the architectural pergola that creates a window to the vista beyond. A raised glass tile spa, capturing the colors of the desert context, serves as a jewel and centerpiece for the outdoor living space.

At Spar GC, we take pride in transforming outdoor spaces into functional, aesthetically pleasing areas that enhance both the beauty and usability of your home. One of our recent projects showcases our dedication to craftsmanship, attention to detail, and passion for creating outdoor structures that stand the test of time. This custom-built deck is a perfect example of how we blend design, durability, and functionality to meet our clients’ unique needs and preferences.
Design and Planning:
From the outset, this project was about more than just building a deck—it was about creating a space where the homeowners could relax, entertain, and enjoy the beauty of their backyard. We began with an in-depth consultation to understand the client's vision, needs, and lifestyle. This allowed us to design a multi-level deck that not only complements the architectural style of the home but also maximizes the available outdoor space.
The deck features an elevated structure that provides a commanding view of the backyard, making it the perfect spot for morning coffees, evening gatherings, or simply unwinding after a long day. The multi-tiered design adds dimension and interest, while the wide staircases ensure easy access to the yard below.
Materials and Craftsmanship:
We believe that the best decks start with the best materials. For this project, we used pressure-treated wood known for its durability and resistance to rot, insects, and harsh weather conditions. This ensures that the deck will remain sturdy and beautiful for years to come, even with minimal maintenance.
Our team of skilled craftsmen meticulously measured, cut, and assembled each piece of wood to ensure a flawless finish. The deck boards were laid with precision, creating a smooth, even surface that is both safe and visually appealing. The railings were carefully constructed to provide both safety and style, featuring clean lines and a robust structure that complements the overall design.
Functional Features:
This deck isn’t just about looks—it’s designed to be highly functional and adaptable to the homeowners’ needs. The spacious upper level provides ample room for outdoor furniture, making it an ideal spot for dining, lounging, or hosting gatherings. The lower level offers additional space that can be used for storage or as a shaded area to escape the sun on hot days.
The wide, sturdy staircases ensure easy and safe access between levels and to the backyard, while the solid railings provide peace of mind, especially for families with young children or pets. Every element of the deck was designed with usability in mind, ensuring that it’s not just a beautiful addition to the home, but a practical one as well.
Aesthetic Appeal:
While functionality was a key focus, we also wanted to create a deck that would enhance the home’s overall aesthetic appeal. The natural wood finish adds warmth and character, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The clean, modern lines of the railings and the thoughtful layout of the deck boards create a cohesive, polished look that elevates the entire outdoor space.
The multi-level design adds architectural interest, breaking up the space and creating distinct areas for different activities. Whether it’s a cozy corner for reading, a spacious area for dining, or a sun-soaked spot for lounging, this deck has it all.
Client Satisfaction:
At Spar GC, our ultimate goal is client satisfaction. We worked closely with the homeowners throughout the entire process, from the initial design phase to the final touches, to ensure that every detail met their expectations. Their feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the deck’s sturdy construction, beautiful design, and the professionalism of our team.
We take great pride in knowing that this deck has not only added value to their home but has also created a space where they can make lasting memories with family and friends.
Why Choose Spar GC?
When you choose Spar GC, you’re not just getting a deck—you’re getting a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about what they do. We bring years of experience, a commitment to quality, and a personalized approach to every project. Our attention to detail, use of high-quality materials, and dedication to client satisfaction set us apart from the competition.
We understand that your home is your sanctuary, and we strive to create outdoor spaces that reflect your style, meet your needs, and exceed your expectations. Whether you’re looking for a simple deck, a complex multi-level structure, or anything in between, Spar GC has the expertise and passion to bring your vision to life.

I have known these clients for 15 years or so and I keep seeing things that I copied to other homes. This room also painted over the dark old wood and added lighting. I am getting very positive feedback for fireplace inserts
