When it came time to remodel their kitchen, a Napa couple knew exactly who to call. Having previously worked with Castle Rock Construction on a basement renovation, the homeowners chose Castle Rock. Although it had served them well, the homeowners wanted something different for their kitchen—something that exemplified their sense of style and had an open floor plan. Starting with a spark of an idea, they were looking for talented craftsmen to make their French Country dream kitchen a reality. Hypoallergenic Finish Solutions One of the biggest priorities in this design was its hypoallergenic characteristics, so we selected solid maple for the door panels and low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) “Pune Bond” plywood for the interior with solid maple drawer boxes. The finishes are: water-based post-catalyzed polyurethane and hypoallergenic grey stain with a clear coat. Eco-friendliness On top of our aspirations to make hypoallergenic and low VOC material choices, we strive to make our designs highly reusable/recyclable and use local materials and labor to keep CO2 emission as low as possible. This kitchen was manufactured at our factory in Etobicoke, including production of door panels. Durability All our kitchens are practical and as low maintenance as they could be. We use highly durable MDF and hardwoods along with reliable finishes, Blum soft-close hardware on doors and drawers. We achieved this goal when designing this kitchen by choosing solid maple doors, plywood interiors, dovetail drawers, Blum soft-close door hinges and drawer slides. The appliance garages have Aventos parallel lifts. All hardware have a lifetime warranty! Use of space It is crucial that you are able to utilize the space at its maximum capacity as well as it is convenient to work on. As you can see here, we adhered to the ‘work triangle’ rule, making it easy to move between the main prep/cooking components: fridge, cooktop/oven and sink. All ‘hot spots’ of this kitchen are at your arm’s stretch. We incorporated appliance garages, waste management systems, tray dividers, wine racks and last but not the least, a combination of shallow and deep drawers. Esthetics A funny thing about esthetics is that no designer will ever tell you that he priorities esthetic qualities over practicality or cost-efficiency, because we do not. However, this is what sells the kitchen, makes your house unique, increases its value on the real estate market and just makes you feel great! That is why esthetics can’t be ignored; it is just as important as everything else!

Situated on a sloping site with a shared driveway and prescribed parking on the lower level, the home was designed to maximize daylight into the walk-out basement. In placing the parking in the center and wrapping the basement spaces around it, all rooms are afforded exterior views. By locating much of the home’s program below street level, the 3244 s.f. house is able to maintain a scale in keeping with the surrounding residences. The grade along the front of the site was pulled back from the home with stepped retaining walls revealing a sunken garden and above-ground basement walls. An entry bridge allows access to the front door above the sunken garden. UV-responsive, color-changing metal siding and cedar rainscreen clad the flat roof volumes of the home while fiber cement boards encase the shed roof volume. The shed was created to provide passive solar daylighting and conditioning in the vaulted living and dining rooms as well as an ideal surface for future solar panels. The home possesses a myriad of outdoor living spaces including a front balcony and sunken courtyard, side balcony terrace, and rear screened porch and deck above a covered patio. The south side balcony is wrapped with a metal and cedar clad bamboo planter which acts as a privacy screen and shading device. Accessibility was a strong consideration in the design as the homeowners were forward-thinking about aging in place. ADA-sized doorways and thresholds are provided as well as a shelled elevator shaft from the basement level.

Once home to possessions no longer suitable for a place upstairs, this basement is now a stay at home resort with a four foot deep resistance pool as its centerpiece. Brick walls and mechanicals were left exposed. New walls are clad with 3¼” tongue and groove flooring. Specialty light-ing, iron hardware and a heavy plank wine cellar door finish this rugged contemporary interior.

Working with Bruce Buffer was nothing shy of an absolutely incredible experience. There is also a 40’0” lineal foot infinity edge feature with spillover waterfall, with lighting in the lower basin for accent. Glass tile is featured throughout the pool, hot tub, infinity edge and face, infinity edge basin, and pool cover housing. The pool is equipped with a hydraulic, automatic pool safety cover. At opposite ends of the infinity edge are 2 custom premium black fire bowls with automatic ignition feature. The pool is finished in Wet Edge pool surface.
