Adding trim to the main wall in the entry integrates the portion of the space below the dropped ceiling with the rest of the wall -- visually and functionally enlarging the space. The depth of the bulkhead dictated the size and proportion of the panels we created. To further distract from the change in ceiling height, we added a carved medallion to the centre panel. We wanted to highlight the trim here, to add interest and definition, so we had them painted antique gold. The ceiling too was given a glam mottled gold finish. The simple, modern chandelier is oversized for the space, but its spare lines keep it from being overwhelming. A new smaller but bolder console table -- its black and gold echoing the stronger details of the living room beyond -- is given added importance by the full-length mirror behind it. The client's own chairs were moved from the family room -- where they were just "okay". Here their contemporary style nicely contrasts with the ornate chest, while dark teal toss pillows add a powerful note that is repeated throughout the main level. Together with the client's bench on the other side of the door, the chairs create an inviting seating area for parties, as well as a thoughtful aid when donning or doffing footwear. We found this area rug on the floor in the family room, where it was too small and too strong for the furnishings. Here it takes on a whole new life as the PERFECT finishing touch.

This huge covered patio in Houston offers a warm, dry, beautiful gathering space for friends and family! The clients, Tim and Julie Burke of Spring, TX wanted something more waterproof than the small gazebo where they often entertained friends and family. The Burkes asked for a large, shingled roof extension that matched the existing house. We gave them an 800-square-foot covered patio with a gabled roof and a gorgeous tongue-and-groove wooden ceiling. The hip roof on one one side covers the existing outdoor kitchen and the outdoor bathroom the Burkes want to build themselves. On the other side is a sloped roof creating a breezeway and sitting area between the patio and house. We also installed the best permanent outdoor heating system we could find – Solaira quartz infrared heating units. Able to throw more heat further and more evenly than portable units, these electric-powered heaters can be installed up and out of sight. You don’t have to lug them around, refuel them with propane and worry about storing them. When you need them, all you need to do is a push a button! When heat strikes, however – as it does for any covered patio in Houston – the Burkes can cool off with two industrial-sized outdoor ceiling fans. Two TVs were also added to the existing outdoor kitchen. The Burkes started enjoying those right away, using them to watch the NCAA Final Four basketball championship with their family. We also built an addition onto the outdoor kitchen island that houses an ice maker and extra seating. We also replaced the countertops with new granite. It pauses once, at a moment of surprise, when the first view through the house is filled with the blue water of the lake beyond. Inside the saturated color of many of the pieces of art are balanced by an absence of other visual clutter in the color palette, furniture and architecture. A new interior plaster, steel and bronze stair carves through a space occupied by two small Clement sculptures in niches, a Page Kempner sculpture on a landing and a glass cylinder elevator. This is a very specific place, designed for specific art and for a collector who has a close relationship with each piece.
