Due heritage considerations, restoration was complex and costly. Due poor site drainage and old construction technique, wall damage due salt damp was prevalent. Existing levels needed regrade with landscaping provided by Lesli Hewett, a relative of the early settlers who resided in the cottage. While the roof structure was intact, it required new galvanised sheeting and the eastern wall needed rebuilding as your finger would go through the wall! Original limestone blocks were rotated to hide age. Stone footings replacement with concete. New work maintained the curvature and ground movement of 180 years of movement. Rotted original floors were replaced by century-old jarrah repurposed from Adelaide's old Clark Shoes factory. The Daringa House offers a farm house feel comprising two bedrooms both with separate ensuites, living, dining and a kitchen area overlooking gardens. The Colton Cottage, with original slate floors, is entirely separate, offering a studio and full size bathroom.

When asked by a client for a home that would stand up against the best of hotel suites, Dawson and Clinton created this Noe Valley residence. To fulfill the request, significant square footage was added to the home, and an open floor plan was used to maximize the space in the bedroom while replicating the feel of a luxury suite. The master bedroom is designed to flow between the home’s terraces, connecting the space in a way that breaks down the relationship between exterior and interior In renovating the bathrooms, designers worked to modernize the aesthetic, while finding space to complement residence with improved amenities, such as a luxurious double shower. The use of glass was prevalent throughout, as a way to bring light down into the lower levels, resulting in what is the home's most striking feature- the staircase.

So when the Society of Fellows asked me to redesign their guest rooms at Eliot House last year, my goal was to assemble an up-to-date, Harvard interior for the 21st century. The fundamental colors of Red (for Crimson), Blue & Yellow felt primarily appropriate for the venue. By blending elements from four eras on campus – Georgian, Arts & Crafts, Modernism and Counter Culture – I anticipated conjuring a sense of the past, from the vantage point of today. Notice the amount of years each style was culturally prevalent. The first 140 years of the college was run by British Loyalists. I wonder how Harvard changed afterwards? The campus certainly continued maintaining English standards of excellence, as did most of the country, by the way. Traditional furniture from this era remains timeless and becomes especially appealing when masterfully intertwined with today’s materials. That earthy Arts & Crafts period has more to do with the college than I’d first imagined. Its principles echo narratives of Thoreau at Walden Pond, Eagle Scouts, horse saddles and several clubs on campus.

With family members spread across the globe, the patriarch of the family wanted to establish a home base that would give them all a chance to recreate, reconnect, and relax over what sometimes could be trips of a month or more. Their large parcel of land is not far from Yellowstone Park, and a trout stream and several ponds are just a few of the prevalent water features. “This couple really liked their view,” recalled Murphy Bros. lead designer Cherie Poissant, “but wanted to frame that view against a point of interest that also screened the neighbors who were only 25 feet away.” Since no stairway was desired, all the space on the deck was in play. “They really liked the idea of a fireplace as the privacy wall,” said Poissant. “That’s pretty unique. You really don’t see stone fireplaces with bench seating and a six-foot wall on a second-floor deck. But that’s why they came to us because we really thrive on the custom design approach,” explains Poissant. Adding a stone fireplace and wall presented some structural support challenges to overcome. Murphy Bros. added several helical piers footings to support the extra weight. Piers are ideal for difficult clay soils, which are so prevalent in Plymouth.
