Phase one of a two phase project. This outbuilding is to serve as a support structure for a forthcoming modern residence. The structure houses a 600 sf heated shop with two heated garage bays, as well as an unheated pull-thru vehicle bay and screened exterior storage area. From a design standpoint , the structure builds upon the legacy of utilitarian agricultural buildings prevalent throughout the Yampa River Valley. Subtle details update the look, with meticulous attention to detail at every level.

The objective for the exterior of this 5000 sq ft residence was to create a classical shingle-style home that reflected the surrounding prevalent architecture. For the interiors, the owners envisioned a modern European elegance providing a stage for the ever-changing plants, flowers, and sculptural containers. Overly traditional trim packages were eliminated and a furnishings package, along with finishes and lighting, were chosen specifically to complement this vision. The combination of floral motif stair runners, modern furniture pieces, custom millwork, and antique pendants therefore creates a bounty of an era gone by, while breathing a fresh perspective into this modern home. Making the houses heat resistant, the summers are much more tolerable and pleasant. According to historical sources, there is one more explanation to what led to the prevalence of the whitewashed houses. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the war, serious deceases, like cholera, plagued the Greek islands. Whitewash is a cheap, disinfectant material that was used regularly to limit the contagion. With family members spread across the globe, the patriarch of the family wanted to establish a home base that would give them all a chance to recreate, reconnect, and relax over what sometimes could be trips of a month or more. Their large parcel of land is not far from Yellowstone Park, and a trout stream and several ponds are just a few of the prevalent water features. The property encompasses the top of a mountain with a lookout tower, and down below, this approximately 7000 square foot home delivers a sense of intimacy. Each bedroom is a master suite, with fireplace, private balcony, and adjoining children’s room, to ensure all generations have the space they need. Our shared approach was to celebrate the romantic lodges of the past, leading us to choose small round logs like those used in Old Faithful Lodge, as one example. With plenty of space inside and out to decompress—but cozy, welcoming living areas as well—this lodge becomes the perfect family gathering place.
