Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped a neighbor and friend to update a “builder grade” kitchen into a personal, family space that feels luxurious and inviting.
The homeowner wanted to solve a number of storage and flow problems in the kitchen, including a wasted area dedicated to a desk, too-little pantry storage, and her wish for a kitchen bar. The all white builder kitchen lacked character, and the client wanted to inject color, texture and personality into the kitchen while keeping it classic.

CUstom designed and built mudroom project. This project solved a variety of problems for the client- no operating room for laundry, no coat or shoe storage in mudroom, and no organization or storage for large bulk items

The client was excited to purchase a home in the beautiful resort of Sandestin, but was not pleased with the dark interiors, heavy mouldings, tile floors, dated fixtures and heavy feel of the interior of the home. We solved their problems by completely renovating the interiors. Ceilings were raised, floors were replaced, cabinetry and fixtures were replaced and a problem area in the living room was solved. They now have the open, clean, airy beach home of their dreams and I couldn't be more pleased with how this home turned out for them.

In order to maintain the work triangle we needed to move the refrigerator to the corner which created an aesthetic problem. No one wants to look at the side of a fridge. So the designer came up with the idea to extend the wall cabinetry to encase the fridge. Problem solved.

This patio and river rock stream helped solve drainage problem. The stream begins with a circular fountain spilling into the stream. The patio is stained concrete with an Oklahoma flagstone border. A bi-level cedar arbor ads shade and a sense of scale to the patio.

Prior to COVID-19, this space was a bypass closet in a spare bedroom. After the pandemic started, the owner was working from home and needed an inexpensive home office. Problem solved. Added a desk height workspace, and some shelving. Electric for the computer and phone!

Our client asked for a more functional and visually pleasing backdrop to his outdoor patio space. The result incorporates lighting, fresh paint, and touches of aged wood trim, to give an old-world European feel. The feature of the design solves a problem our client did not realize he had. A broken and leaking downspout led to deterioration of the home’s stucco finish. To solve this problem and route the water away from the outdoor entertaining space, we constructed a large scupper which also serves as a gateway/arbor. Rainwater harvesting and use of thermally modified wood add points for sustainability.

I designed these stationary Roman Shades to solve a problem. The French doors (not seen) were much taller than the top of the windows. The cornices were installed as high as the door and now look in proportion.
