Coming from Minnesota this couple already had an appreciation for a woodland retreat. Wanting to lay some roots in Sun Valley, Idaho, guided the incorporation of historic hewn, stone and stucco into this cozy home among a stand of aspens with its eye on the skiing and hiking of the surrounding mountains.

Habitus Cork Mosaic "Penny" Tile Color Mix of Natural Cork & Green Tea. Introduced in 2014 by The Habitus Collection
Habitus Cork Mosaic “Penny” Tiles are the forward-looking green finish material! And like all cork products; Cork Mosaic Tile is a renewable resource. It is literally recycled from the wine stopper industry from Spain and Portugal. Chips are selected and fashioned by hand on sheets and installed to walls and floors, including wet areas, using thin-set mortar and tile grout. Similar procedures as for any typical ceramic or other mosaic tile. It can also be stained colors and finished in many ways using products we supply or recommend.

This house, built in the 1960s, sits southfacing on a terrific wooded lot in Bethesda, Maryland.
The owners desire a whole-house renovation which would improve the general building fabric and systems, and extend the sense of living out of doors in all seasons.
The original sixties-modern character is preserved and the renovation extends the design forward into a contemporary, modern approach. Connections to and through the site are enhanced through the creation of new larger window and door openings.
Screened porches and decks perch above the sloped and wooded site. The new kitchen and bathrooms allow for opportunities to feel out-of -doors while preparing, cooking, dining, and bathing.
Smart passive strategies guide the environmental choices for this project, including envelope improvements, updated mechanical systems, and on-site stormwater management.

Silver 16 in. x 24 in. Tumbled Travertine Pavers are natural stone that add timeless Tuscan beauty into your patio or walkway. Ideal for indoor or outdoor applications, these natural stone pavers are durable and have various shades of silver and gray that create a subtle visual interest. With a tumbled finish, the tile provides a rustic aged look that blends with the surroundings to create a perfect setting. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

AFTER: In this view, you get a glimpse of the carved table base supporting the granite table at the end of the counter. You can also see that the stove is centered in the back counter, providing plenty of counter space on either side of it. Previously, the stove was much nearer the refrigerator, making for very little counter space on the right side of it.
