We designed this master bathroom with beach cottage spa in mind to provide a calming oasis. We assembled rich taupe cabinetry and blended it with a double herringbone wood tile floor and quartz counter tops for a simple classic look. This 1990's home, located in North Vancouver's Lynn Valley neighbourhood, had high ceilings and a great open plan layout but the decor was straight out of the 90's complete with sponge painted walls in dark earth tones. The owners, a young professional couple, enlisted our help to take it from dated and dreary to modern and bright. We started by removing details like chair rails and crown mouldings, that did not suit the modern architectural lines of the home. We replaced the heavily worn wood floors with a new high end, light coloured, wood-look laminate that will withstand the wear and tear from their two energetic golden retrievers. Since the main living space is completely open plan it was important that we work with simple consistent finishes for a clean modern look. The all white kitchen features flat doors with minimal hardware and a solid surface marble-look countertop and backsplash. We modernized all of the lighting and updated the bathrooms and master bedroom as well. The only departure from our clean modern scheme is found in the dressing room where the client was looking for a more dressed up feminine feel but we kept a thread of grey consistent even in this more vivid colour scheme. This transformation, featuring the clients' gorgeous original artwork and new custom designed furnishings is admittedly one of our favourite projects to date!

2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY FINALIST AWARD WINNER This 1970’s split-level single-family home in an upscale Arlington neighborhood had been neglected for years. With his surrounding neighbors all doing major exterior and interior remodeling, however, the owner decided it was time to renovate his property as well. After several consultation meetings with the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, he settled on an exterior layout to create an Art & Craft design for the home. It all got started by excavating the front and left side of the house and attaching a wrap-around stone porch. Key design attributes include a black metal roof, large tapered columns, blue and grey random style flag stone, beaded stain ceiling paneling and an octagonal seating area on the left side of this porch. The front porch has a wide stairway and another set of stairs leads to the back yard. All exterior walls of the home were modified with new headers to allow much larger custom-made windows, new front doors garage doors, and French side and back doors. A custom-designed mahogany front door with leaded glass provides more light and offers a wider entrance into the home’s living area. Design challenges included removing the entire face of the home and then adding new insulation, Tyvek and Hardiplank siding. The use of high-efficiency low-e windows makes the home air tight. The Arts & Crafts design touches include the front gable over the front porch, the prairie-style grill pattern on the windows and doors, the use of tapered columns sitting over stone columns and the leaded glass front door. Decorative exterior lighting provides the finishing touches to this look. Inside, custom woodwork, crown molding, custom glass cabinets and interior pillars carry the design. Upon entering the space, visitors face a large partition that separates the living area from a gourmet Arts & Crafts kitchen and dining room. The home’s signature space, the kitchen offers contrasting dark and light cherry cabinets. Wide plank hard wood floors, exotic granite counters and stainless steel professional-grade appliances make this a kitchen fit for any chef.

The home’s façade features several contemporary accents that, combined, create an eye-catching grand entrance. I love to add an organic element to the exterior and the mahogany wood slats fulfill this component. They add a warmth that some contemporary homes are lacking. The experts at Four Seasons Outdoor Living completed my vision with their beautiful landscaping. Several patches of monkey grass line the large, rectangular concrete blocks that lead right up to the 8-foot high door. LBJ Construction brought my vision of a large, stunning doorway to life. The home originally had a standard 6’ 8” door. We removed the outdated window shutters for a more polished appearance. New windows and a brand new roof not only add to the curb appeal, but make for a much more energy efficient home in the heat of the Houston summer. I truly enjoyed working with these amazing professionals. This was an extremely fun project with a phenomenal outcome.

We took a pass through room without purpose and turned it into a vibrant, functional, high design office that works well for the entire family. Wrap around shelving, inspired by mid century designs, gave the room loads of personality and storage for both husband and wife, and their 2 year old son. While children's books, crafting tools and educational supplies are stored on the easy-access lower shelves, work materials and reference books are stored on the top shelves. A room-wide desk provides an ample side by side work space for both professionals to share comfortably.

Lighting and controls design by Alpenglow Lighting Design, Inc. All lighting is LED, with fully integrated lighting controls. A deep cove wraps the entire living and dining area, concealing shade motors and LED lighting. LEDs light under the kitchen peninsula bar, adding depth the the space. A complete kitchen remodel brought a dark interior kitchen to the light and a full furnishings package welcomed Los Angeles transplants home to their new modern and bright residence. Our clients, a retired camera operator for both feature films and television and a producer/production manager on numerous television series including Weeds and The Middle, relocated from their traditionally-styled LA bungalow to Portland in the Summer of 2014. The couple sought a design departure from their long-term California residence and a fresh start for their new life in the South Waterfront. With only two pieces of sentimental furniture and a handful of artwork included in the plan, we set out to create a comfortable and clean-lined furnishings package complimenting the broad southeast views. Organically shaped upholstery pieces juxtaposed with angular steel and wood tables create a soft balance in the open floor plan. Several custom pieces, including a dining table designed by our studio and a custom hand-blown glass chandelier crafted by Scott Schiesel with Lightlite compliment timeless pieces from Knoll, Herman Miller, and B&B Italia. The kitchen is designed to reflect light and create brilliance in a space that is otherwise naturally dark. A material balance of stainless steel, back painted glass, quartz composite, lacquer, and mirror all play their part in creating a vibrant cooking environment. We collectively decided to forgo the traditional island pendant for a linear commercial fixture that provides tremendous light to the prep surface and creates an unexpected architectural element. The mirrored prep island creates the illusion of open space while concealing casework and wine storage on the working side of the kitchen. It is worth noting that this project was designed and installed almost entirely while our clients were still living in LA and wrapping up professional obligations and selling their home. This afforded us the tremendous opportunity to send our clients to showrooms not available in Portland to view key pieces before final specification. Textiles and finish samples were approved via mail and communication took place over e-mail, telephone, and an occasional office visit. This unique process lead to a successful result and a beautifully balanced living environment.

This garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation.

Contemporary is the only way to describe this Chicago suburban kitchen. The flat paneled, honey colored cabinetry is set off by the sleek stainless steel appliances and back splash. The oak flooring gives a warm feel as does the black granite counter top.

Built in the 1950s, this rambler housed a dark, cramped galley kitchen only 6’ x 20’. A later addition added more space, but wasn’t optimally designed. So, when they purchased the property, the new owners did so with the intent of gutting and remodeling the first floor. The goal of the renovation was to create a functional, dedicated kitchen and dining room space while keeping many of the home’s historic touches. The first step was to remove the bearing wall between kitchen and living room and install a structural beam to create a seamless connection between the two spaces. A large center island was designed to be the focal point of the space, complete with a new farm sink and room to serve four or more people. A professional range with a stylish wooden hood was installed and custom cabinets wrap around the entire kitchen to provide plenty of storage. Meanwhile, a custom-built hutch was installed in the dining room area, as was a butler’s pantry, to add more flair to the project. A timeless tile backsplash was installed to spruce up the soft color granite top which was carefully selected to harmonize with cabinet and floor color schemes. The lighting was revamped and redesigned for entire space, including a couple of hanging pendants over the island. Wide plank distressed hardwood flooring was installed all over the kitchen and dining room to maintain the integrity of historic look. With all new appliances, linen-stained maple cabinetry and distressed wood Island, old world hickory floor and more, this project moved from its dysfunctional status to fun and funky.
