The west wall of the library has an art arrangement of black and white photo's depicting scenes around and about in the city. The extra deep lounge chairs are a comfortable indulgence. A view of the bar wall hidden behind the bookcase. This residence was built in the 1920's at the height of prohibition. The flat screen tv built-in over the fireplace with it's original marble mantle. Photography by Tom Grimes

This open kitchen plan replaced a seldom used living room. Perimeter cabinets are Dura Supreme, Hudson door in Linen White, while the island is a custom color Sherwin Williams 9139 "Debonair". Budget restrains prohibited the use of solid surface, so designer Michele Harder selected WilsonArt "Spring Carnival" (#1876-35) for the post form counter-top which simulates a granite look. The Seamless Quartz Sink is Karran # Q-340 in a concrete color. The island countertop is Formica :Weathered Beamwood" #6410-NG. Homecrest Oasis Laminate in color Rhapsody for flooring throughtout the entire main level (including hallway leading to the bedrooms and into the family room). This is a seriously scratch resistance, water proof flooring which is perfect since there is a pool in the backyard. The pantry took some closet space from a bedroom and is covered by a custom designed sliding barn door. Laminate and Formica counter tops simulate a granite look while a quartz under-mount sink makes clean up a breeze. The custom colored island is flanked by white linen cabinetry. Live edge floating shelves add a touch of rustic charm.

This ground floor addition was done for a family living in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood. Often clients come to us wanting to expand their house and vertical additions are cost prohibitive. The ground floor of a house can be reconfigured to provide wonderful living spaces and a strong connection to the outdoors.

To maintain matrimonial harmony, it was time to transform the primary bathroom into a room built for two with two sinks being at the top of the needs list (the original sink and dinky mirror were located between the two exterior windows). Finishes throughout were also ready for an update.
The bathroom was gutted which provided an opportunity to open up the cave like shower and install the much-desired dual sinks and bidet toilet. The challenge was how to place mirrors and lighting for each sink which were centered on the exterior windows. The exterior wall framing, and the windows prohibited the placement of both a light fixture and a mirror above the sink(s). To remedy this issue, the casing on either side of the window was removed and wiring for lights was installed. The casing was bored to allow the wiring to run through to the surface mounted Twiggy LED lights (by Edge Lighting) which are hinged to allow the user to move the lights in for full illumination of the face. The mirrors, in frames to match the cabinetry, where then mounted on a barn door track installed above the window frame. The mirrors not only clear the Twiggy lights but can be moved to the left of their original location to allow the natural light from the windows to pour through. To round out the new design, more and better organized storage and a rear grooming mirror were incorporated in this small, narrow bathroom.

In this project, Rochman Design Build converted an unfinished basement of a new Ann Arbor home into a stunning home pub and entertaining area, with commercial grade space for the owners' craft brewing passion. The feel is that of a speakeasy as a dark and hidden gem found in prohibition time. The materials include charcoal stained concrete floor, an arched wall veneered with red brick, and an exposed ceiling structure painted black. Bright copper is used as the sparkling gem with a pressed-tin-type ceiling over the bar area, which seats 10, copper bar top and concrete counters. Old style light fixtures with bare Edison bulbs, well placed LED accent lights under the bar top, thick shelves, steel supports and copper rivet connections accent the feel of the 6 active taps old-style pub. Meanwhile, the brewing room is splendidly modern with large scale brewing equipment, commercial ventilation hood, wash down facilities and specialty equipment. A large window allows a full view into the brewing room from the pub sitting area. In addition, the space is large enough to feel cozy enough for 4 around a high-top table or entertain a large gathering of 50. The basement remodel also includes a wine cellar, a guest bathroom and a room that can be used either as guest room or game room, and a storage area.

Located on a narrow urban infill lot, this single-family residence with attached ADU was fashioned for a food brand designer and restaurateur with an affinity for pre-war Parisian apartments. Use of minimal form and materials, on a cost-conscious budget, was intended to achieve a maximum atmospheric interior result.
The daylight filled interior focuses on an easterly, inward facing courtyard through a rhythm of punched openings, western light is introduced for balancing only. The home is classically proportioned with subtle drywall details which recall decorative mouldings. From the primary room the Owner teaches cooking classes, entertains, and samples potential menu items while hosting dinner parties. The walls are adorned with her own paintings (made for her first restaurant with no budget).
Health-conscious decisions were made both inside and out, selecting no V.O.C. finishes, wall- board and sheathing which prohibit mold and protective exterior coatings which prevent EMFs from penetrating the building envelope.
The home is designed to nurture aging-in-place; maintenance friendly materials and plans for a future solar array will reduce overhead expenses in coming years.

The primary style of this new lounge space could be classified as an American-style pub, with the rustic quality of a prohibition-era speakeasy balanced by the masculine look of a Victorian-era men’s lounge. The wet bar was designed as three casual sections distributed along the two window walls. Custom counters were created by combining antiqued copper on the surface and riveted iron strapping on the edges. The ceiling was opened up, peaking at 12', and the framing was finished with reclaimed wood, converting the vaulted space into a pyramid for a four-walled cathedral ceiling.
