Hall Bathroom Designed for two growing daughters to share, the hall bathroom balances timeless style with smart functionality. Although the room has just one small window, a carefully curated palette of warm whites, marble, and soft color helps the space feel bright and open. Traditional details—including wall paneling, marble hex floor tile, pencil trim, and a pedestal sink—give the bathroom classic character while maintaining an airy feel. The same marble flooring continues into the shower to create visual continuity, making the room feel larger and less segmented. Storage was thoughtfully integrated wherever possible. A recessed built-in cabinet takes advantage of otherwise unused wall space, giving each daughter her own dedicated shelf for everyday essentials. A shallow ledge behind the pedestal sink provides additional storage while helping the room feel more open by aligning the sink wall with the shower enclosure. The finishing touch—a patterned wallpaper added late in the design process—brings warmth, depth, and personality without overwhelming the space.

A large island was designed for this kitchen to provide additional storage and counter top space. The oil rubbed bronze knobs and cup pulls blend with the quartz counter tops and contrast the lighter cabinetry. - Allison Caves, CKD Caves Kitchens

This super compact master bath features maple cabinetry with lots of custom storage details. There is a tilt-out at the sink and a 4" high pull out tray under the sink. The specially designed medicine cabinet has multiple individual interior compartments all at different sizes and depths to work around the myriad plumbing and framing impediments within the wall. At installation, the medicine cabinet slid into the wall around all of these obstacles. The cabinet protrudes slightly from the wall, giving the owners additional coveted storage space and as well as space to install under cabinet lighting. An additional valet cabinet with an open shelf over the commode provides additional storage and the interior was also custom designed and built to accommodate impediments within the wall. When my client had to move from her company office to work at home, she set up in the dining room. Despite her best efforts, this was not the long-term solution she was looking for. My client realized she needed a dedicated space not on the main floor of the home. On one hand, having your office space right next to the kitchen is handy. On the other hand, it made separating work and home life was not that easy. The house was a ranch. In essence, the basement would run entire length of the home. As we came down the steps, we entered a time capsule. The house was built in the 1950’s. The walls were covered with original knotty pine paneling. There was a wood burning fireplace and considering this was a basement, high ceilings. In addition, there was everything her family could not store at their own homes. As we wound though the space, I though “wow this has potential”, Eventually, after walking through the laundry room we came to a small nicely lit room. This would be the office. My client looked at me and asked what I thought. Undoubtedly, I said, this can be a great workspace, but do you really want to walk through this basement and laundry to get here? Without reservation, my client said where do we start? Once the design was in place, we started the renovation. The knotty pine paneling had to go. Specifically, to add some insulation and control the dampness and humidity. The laundry room wall was relocated to create a hallway to the office. At the far end of the room, we designated a workout zone. Weights, mats, exercise bike and television are at the ready for morning or afternoon workouts. The space can be concealed by a folding screen for party time. Doors to an old closet under the stairs were relocated to the workout area for hidden storage. Now we had nice wall for a beautiful console and mirror for storage and serving during parties. In order to add architectural details, we covered the old ugly support columns with simple recessed millwork panels. This detail created a visual division between the bar area and the seating area in front of the fireplace. The old red brick on the fireplace surround was replaced with stack stone. A mantle was made from reclaimed wood. Additional reclaimed wood floating shelves left and right of the fireplace provides decorative display while maintaining a rustic element balancing the copper end table and leather swivel rocker. We found an amazing rug which tied all of the colors together further defining the gathering space. Russet and burnt orange became the accent color unifying each space. With a bit of whimsy, a rather unusual light fixture which looks like roots from a tree growing through the ceiling is a conversation piece. The office space is quite and removed from the main part of the basement. There is a desk large enough for multiple screens, a small bookcase holding office supplies and a comfortable chair for conference calls. Because working from home requires many online meetings, we added a shiplap wall painted in Hale Navy to contrast with the orange fabric on the chair. We finished the décor with a painting from my client’s father. This is the background online visitors will see. The last and best part of the renovation is the beautiful bar. My client is an avid collector of wine. She already had the EuroCave refrigerator, so I incorporated it into the design. The cabinets are painted Temptation Grey from Benjamin Moore. The counter tops are my favorite hard working quartzite Brown Fantasy. The backsplash is a combination of rustic wood and old tin ceiling like porcelain tiles. Together with the textures of the reclaimed wood and hide poofs balanced against the smooth finish of the cabinets, we created a comfortable luxury for relaxing. There is ample storage for bottles, cans, glasses, and anything else you can think of for a great party. In addition to the wine storage, we incorporated a beverage refrigerator, an ice maker, and a sink. Floating shelves with integrated lighting illuminate the back bar. The raised height of the front bar provides the perfect wine tasting and paring spot. I especially love the pendant lights which look like wine glasses. Finally, I selected carpet for the stairs and office. It is perfect for noise reduction. Meanwhile for the overall flooring, I specifically selected a high-performance vinyl plank floor. We often use this product as it is perfect to install on a concrete floor. It is soft to walk on, easy to clean and does not reduce the overall height of the space.

By removing the wall between the kitchen & dining room, as well as the walls of the dining room, which created a hallway, provided the large space to expand the kitchen into. Also, by taking the soffits out, allowed us to take the cabinetry to the ceiling, which provided additional cabinet storage, as well as "visual height" to the space. The homeowner brought incredibly unique and special elements that she wanted incorporated into the overall design of the space, such as two antique French carved wood panels, an antique "Arms of France" fireback, as well as the 60" Round dining table, which was custom modified to the exact height needed for the top to rest on the island countertop. This warm and inviting space can comfortably seat 8, in addition to their formal dining room. Another focal point of the kitchen space came in the form of the custom hutch that was created from matching the island cabinetry, as well as the cherry base cabinets, with the wood countertop. The "X" mullion doors flanking the open cookbook storage space and plate rack, show off its contents with interior LED tape lights. The base of the hutch also conceals two Thermador refrigerator drawers, which are easily accessed as family and friends come in from the pool, though the new sliding glass doors that were installed where a large window was previously. All of the unique, existing, new, and custom elements came together better than we had even hoped; creating a warm and inviting space that feels like it has always been a part of this beautiful home.

Reimagining an Urban Classic Perched high above San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood, this meticulously reimagined residence represents a thoughtful transformation of a classic urban home into a contemporary, light-filled sanctuary. "We would LOVE a FUNCTIONAL Blue and White kitchen please!" stated the clients who longed for a kitchen that the whole family can cook in. Kristin, our Senior Designer was only too happy to oblige. Using an inset cabinetry selected by the client, Kristin worked her magic. She created an expansive Blue island complete with a prep sink so "no more waiting in line to use the sink!" In addition, the cooktop was relocated from the island to provide additional prep and entertaining space. Plus, an intimate seating area was created. Of course, a beautiful shade of blue was selected for the island. On the perimeter of the kitchen, the refrigeration was separated to provide easy, quick access to the abundance of fresh vegetables needed for each meal, and were paneled to be pleasing to the eye. A speed oven and a convection oven are perfect for the wonderful baked breads, cakes, cookies and casseroles created by this family. A wine area took the place of a desk creating a drink station while entertaining. A beautiful quartzite with rich blue veins was painstakingly selected to tie in the entire space and a textured subway tile completed the look. Rhapsody in Blue= Family Harmony!

The original bathroom featured a dark diagonal shiplap with a built-in tub that dimmed the room and created a smaller feel of the space. By replacing the shiplap with a white simply patterned wallpaper we brighten the room and opened the floor plan by removing the built-in tub and substituting it with a free-standing tub. Using the original layout, we repurposed the pre-existing cabinets by installing an additional two drawers and a wall cabinet to give an illusion of built-in cabinets while also providing additional storage space. The extended double vanities were created by removing the closet space and replacing it with another set of drawers and wall cabinets to provide extra storage space and create a cohesive bathroom layout.

Reimagining an Urban Classic Perched high above San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood, this meticulously reimagined residence represents a thoughtful transformation of a classic urban home into a contemporary, light-filled sanctuary. The project involved a comprehensive renovation paired with both vertical and horizontal expansion, dramatically increasing the home’s footprint while enhancing its relationship to sweeping views of the Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the surrounding hillside neighborhoods. The design strategy focused on opening the home to light, air, and vistas—elements often constrained in the dense urban fabric of San Francisco. By extending the structure upward and outward, the architects created a dynamic four-level residence that unfolds gradually, culminating in expansive living spaces and rooftop terraces oriented toward panoramic city and water views. Architecture that Frames the View At the heart of the design is a careful orchestration of sightlines and natural light. Large black-framed windows punctuate the façade and interior spaces, deliberately positioned to capture iconic San Francisco vistas while flooding the home with daylight. The architecture prioritizes openness, allowing rooms to flow seamlessly while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape. A dramatic skylight above the central stairwell anchors the vertical circulation of the home. This architectural gesture not only brings daylight deep into the interior but also reinforces the sense of spatial continuity between floors. Warm Modern Interiors Inside, the home balances architectural clarity with warm materiality. Wide-plank oak floors run throughout the residence, creating visual cohesion and grounding the interiors with natural warmth. Private Retreats Above the City Upper levels of the home are dedicated to quieter, more intimate spaces. The primary suite is conceived as a private retreat, where expansive windows frame treetop views and invite natural light throughout the day. The accompanying bathroom continues the home’s refined material palette.
