What made this tricky was that there wasn’t any extra material so we had to be very careful with our quantities when we were finishing the floating staircase build. The treads have LED light strips underneath as well as a high polish, which give it a beautiful finish. The only challenge is that the darker wood and higher polish can sometimes show scratches more easily. The stairs have a somewhat mid-century modern feel due to the square handrail and the Stairworks exclusive round spindle balustrade. The beautiful oak wood grain shows through the black finish and provides a touch of elegance coupled with the rustic oak stain. We created two different bottle storage areas, one up top for larger quantities with a reserve area lower for special collections. The contemporary cabinets on the window wall were created using the Aventos Lift system on the slab doors for modern operation and easy access to contents. Finally we stained the rolling ladder to match our cabinetry to complete this beautiful space.

Kitchen - transitional u-shaped kitchen idea in San Francisco with shaker cabinets and blue cabinets

This 7,500 SF spec house, built in the early 1980s, underwent extensive remodeling to transform much of its interior spaces into a simple and yet elegant French style country house. Designed by Joszi Meskan, the 2-1/2 year long project involved teams of skilled craftsmen from different trades and a knowledgeable client, who was not only a family friend but also played a major role in the design process. As both project designer and carpenter, Lawrence Cheung helped his father supervise the project from the early stages of demolition to project completion. Reclaimed barn timbers that span high above the foyer and two-story living room were transported from a lumber mill in San Rafael, CA. Large quantities of French oak boards were purchased from France to be used for both flooring and the wall panels in the living and dining rooms. Each board was then pain-stakingly hand-scraped and distressed before going through a multi-step staining and finishing process. The baseboards, door casings, and European shutters were all custom made in white oak and later finished to match the warm honey-tone of the French oak panels.

A beautiful tudor in the Rouken Glen neighborhood of Larchmont New York, in Lower Westchester County New York, had a dated 1950s kitchen. The homeowner, who loves to cook, had huge quantities of cookware and serving pieces, so her new kitchen needed to have lots of storage. However, she also wanted an open feel with minimal upper cabinets. Dearborn Cabinetry worked with architect Zach Schweter to design the new, open layout with a large island with ample seating. Dearborn developed a custom door for this customer who wanted a very clean, shaker style look with minimalist details. Cabinetry color is Benjamin Moore brushed aluminum; countertops are Pietra Cardosa limestone; appliances by Thermador; sink by Shaws (Rohl).

This modern green home offers both a vacation destination on Cape Cod near local family members and an opportunity for rental income. FAMILY ROOTS. A West Coast couple living in the San Francisco Bay Area sought a permanent East Coast vacation home near family members living on Cape Cod. As academic professionals focused on sustainability, they sought a green, energy efficient home that was well-aligned with their values. With no green homes available for sale on Cape Cod, they decided to purchase land near their family and build their own. SLOPED SITE. Comprised of a 3/4 acre lot nestled in the pines, the steeply sloping terrain called for a plan that embraced and took advantage of the slope. Of equal priority was optimizing solar exposure, preserving privacy from abutters, and creating outdoor living space. The design accomplished these goals with a simple, rectilinear form, offering living space on the both entry and lower/basement levels. The stepped foundation allows for a walk-out basement level with light-filled living space on the down-hill side of the home. The traditional basement on the eastern, up-hill side houses mechanical equipment and a home gym. The house welcomes natural light throughout, captures views of the forest, and delivers entertainment space that connects indoor living space to outdoor deck and dining patio. MODERN VISION. The clean building form and uncomplicated finishes pay homage to the modern architectural legacy on the outer Cape. Durable and economical fiber cement panels, fixed with aluminum channels, clad the primary form. Cedar clapboards provide a visual accent at the south-facing living room, which extends a single roof plane to cover the entry porch. SMART USE OF SPACE. On the entry level, the “L”-shaped living, dining, and kitchen space connects to the exterior living, dining, and grilling spaces to effectively double the home’s summertime entertainment area.
