Constructing raised vegetable garden beds that will be set back from a larger zen rock garden.
This is an example of a mid-sized rustic full sun backyard mulch formal garden for spring.

It was pretty much a blank area but with some elevation issues. A rustic inlay design was incorporated into the natural cleft bluestone patio. The seating wall served 2 purposes as a seating space but also to retain some of the patio. Natural fieldstone steppers lead from the driveway area to the patio. An assortment of perennials and plantings soften the hardscape project. Serviceberry, hybrid dogwood, and a large dwarf pine are the anchor plants. Carved into one end of this side yard where sun is actually abundant (a rarity in any city lot), the family enjoys a chance to grow their own vegetables. Using irregular bluestone flagstone for the paths, bluestone wall stone for the raised beds, and then interplanting perennials within the beds and access paths, the design conveys a rustic kitchen garden feel while still holding a sense of formality that sits well with the home.

This is an urban single family home situated on a narrow lot that is about 1/8 of an acre and is only 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I designed a completely new garden and installed everything along with the client’s help. The garden I designed consisted of an ornamental grass garden, a xeriscape garden with decomposed granite mounds, fruit trees and shrubs located throughout, a jungle forest garden, and raised brick vegetable beds in the rear. Previously, there was a wood deck covering almost the entire property that was removed by the owner. We installed root guard around all of the walkways. I installed the raised brick vegetable beds and walkways around the vegetable beds. Many of the plants were chosen to provide food and habitat for pollinators as well. A good garden keeps the critters out while allowing easy access when you want to go grab a few cherry tomatoes or head of lettuce. All of our gardens are fully enclosed with attractive fencing and have at least one gate for convenient entrance. Other great features include raised beds filled with nutrient rich organic soil, weed-controlled isles covered with quality pea gravel, and all-natural (untreated) lumber.
