Design ideas for a large farmhouse partial sun front yard brick driveway in Minneapolis for fall.

The client wanted to change their partially finished basement from an indoor play area for their children and pets to a club like atmosphere where they could entertain in the winter months, enjoy watching sports and share their favorite hobby, tasting wine. The design was realized by integrating a natural jog in the exterior wall which provided the perfect spot to recess the back-bar area, a television and lighted shelves to display liquor. The lighted shelving creates a cool illumination which adds to the club vibe. Tall illuminated glass door cabinets display glasses and bar ware. Under the counter you will find a dishwasher, sink, ice maker and liquor storage. The front bar contains an undercounter refrigerator, built in garbage/ recycle center and more custom storage for cases of beer, soda and mixers. A raised waterfall countertop has seating for six. High top tables add to the club feel and can be combined for communal style tastings. For the client’s extensive wine collection, a walk-in wine cellar anchors the bar. Glass panels showcase the bottles and illuminate the space with soft dramatic lighting. Extra high ceiling heights allowed for a dropped soffit around the bar for recessed lighting and created a tray ceiling to highlight the custom chrome and crystal light fixture

Renovation and expansion of a 1930s-era classic. Buying an old house can be daunting. But with careful planning and some creative thinking, phasing the improvements helped this family realize their dreams over time. The original International Style house was built in 1934 and had been largely untouched except for a small sunroom addition. Phase 1 construction involved opening up the interior and refurbishing all of the finishes. Phase 2 included a sunroom/master bedroom extension, renovation of an upstairs bath, a complete overhaul of the landscape and the addition of a swimming pool and terrace. And thirteen years after the owners purchased the home, Phase 3 saw the addition of a completely private master bedroom & closet, an entry vestibule and powder room, and a new covered porch.

Like most of our projects, we can't gush about this reno—a new kitchen and mudroom, ensuite closet and pantry—without gushing about the people who live there. The best projects, we always say, are the ones in which client, contractor and design team are all present throughout, conception to completion, each bringing their particular expertise to the table and forming a cohesive, trustworthy team that is mutually invested in a smooth and successful process. They listen to each other, give the benefit of the doubt to each other, do what they say they'll do. This project exemplified that kind of team, and it shows in the results. Most obvious is the opening up of the kitchen to the dining room, decompartmentalizing somewhat a century-old bungalow that was originally quite purposefully compartmentalized. As a result, the kitchen had to become a place one wanted to see clear through from the front door. Inset cabinets and carefully selected details make the functional heart of the house equal in elegance to the more "public" gathering spaces, with their craftsman depth and detail. An old back porch was converted to interior space, creating a mudroom and a much-needed ensuite walk-in closet. A new, larger deck went on: Phase One of an extensive design for outdoor living, that we all hope will be realized over the next few years. Finally, a duplicative back stairwell was repurposed into a walk-in pantry. Modernizing often means opening spaces up for more casual living and entertaining, and/or making better use of dead space. In this re-conceptualized old house, we did all of that, creating a back-of-the-house that is now bright and cheerful and new, while carefully incorporating meaningful vintage and personal elements. The best result of all: the clients are thrilled. And everyone who went in to the project came out of it friends. Lincoln Lighthill Architect’s extensive renovation of an early 60's, Eichler-esque home on Twin Peaks answers the question by picking up where the original house left off, with simple but important updates that reimagine this unique home. By replacing punched windows with walls of glass, removing interior walls and opening up a 40’ wide living space with a large steel moment frame, inserting skylights at key locations to bring light deep into the interior, and cantilevering a steel and timber deck off the front to take in the spectacular view, the full potential of the original design is realized. The renovation included an inside and out rethinking of how the home functions, with new kitchen, bathrooms, and finishes throughout. A comprehensive energy upgrade included efficient windows, LED lighting and dimming controls, spray-foam insulation throughout, efficient furnace upgrades, and pre-wiring for a rooftop solar system.

Part of an extensive home remodel, this kitchen design was born of one man’s love of all things Harley Davidson. Color inspiration came from the client’s own cherished bike which was a stunning combination of matte black and brushed steel. The client’s wish was to have a large open area in which he could “be one with his guests” when hosting large gatherings. Cabinets, hardware and appliances all in black allow the focus to be on the beauty of the larger architectural elements as a whole. Included along the main storage wall is a hidden 42” refrigerator, dual pull-out pantries, and extra wide drawers below a pair of upper cabinets with matte black glass fold-up doors that open & close automatically via servo-drive technology. The new island - which measures just shy of 16 ½ feet! - is a true central point around which all action revolves. Wide walkways on either side provide ease of flow for multiple sous chefs and guests alike. A textured cypress soffit above the island was designed to house the modern hood and also create a feeling of unity as it is the same size as the island below. Textured cypress wood also wraps matte black cabinetry and lines the main wall, changing grain direction to provide visual interest. The 5’ Galley Workstation is a multi-functional marvel, easily transitioning from prep station to serving surface to clean-up with the addition of its built-in accessories. Placing an undercounter wine refrigerator on the back side of the island makes it easy for guests at the bar to help themselves. Close to the bar seating area, a 42” flat screen tv fits perfectly flush in the wall, practically disappearing when not in use. Unique details include a large display cabinet with a metal framed front & side crafted out of steel by a local artisan. The glass is 2-way mirror so when the interior light is off, the treasure is concealed inside. The interior is painted in the trademark Harley orange. Above a modern dining table, a one-of-a-kind chandelier was created from 3 bike helmets, painted in Harley orange by a local automobile detail shop. The interiors are finished in metallic silver for extra glow. Adjacent to the Kitchen, and initially deceiving in its simplicity, the main tv wall was quite complex and challenging to realize. It has a convex curve from left to right and slopes back from floor to ceiling. The interior hollow space created room for a shallow tv niche on top and partially recessed deep media storage cabinets below. The planning and framing involved to create the proper compound miter connections required extra diligence from the designers and builder, but the finished product was worth the effort! The Aaron Peck house is in the heart of Wickford Village in North Kingstown and dates to the late eighteenth century. The original structure was a modest storey and a half gambrel with later saltbox and contemporary kitchen additions. While the house had been worked on extensively over the years, it was built over a shallow, unventilated crawlspace and all previous work had overlooked addressing the decay that two hundred and thirty years of wet, stale air can have on the floor framing and house sills. When Picus Woodwrights was engaged, we could push against one side of the house and feel the walls move on the opposite side. The homeowners reached out to us to design and build a master suite on the second floor that would provide modern amenities while remaining sensitive to the original features of the house. However, we all quickly realized that before we could take this part of the project on, the house would need significant structural work and the long-closed crawlspace would need to be opened. This gave us the opportunity to not only replace any failed framing and add a full foundation but to upgrade all of the utilities and add spray foam insulation, as well. We also restored the original single-hung windows and added discrete central air and heat to the first and second floors. Picus managed not only the project budget, design and construction but also the administrative oversight that comes with a project in need of extensive structural work located on the water and in a historic district. Ultimately, we restored or rebuilt most of the interior of the house and, in so doing, addressed both the needs of the client and the needs of the building. While in construction, we sometimes fondly and sometimes wryly referred to the house as a Faberge egg or a ship-in-a-bottle.

This Tuscan style home located in Newport Beach, CA was missing the focal point of entry which was the entry door. It was incorrectly fitted with a Spanish Colonial style by the builder which was made of a less-than-adequate quality thus it became unusable after only a few years of use. The home itself had a rich Tuscan architectural flavor that was begging for an authentically designed entry door that would bring it justice. After extensive research of real Tuscan historical homes, our design team came up with a wonderful entry door design that would complement the home's intended style. The main focus was to maintain that old world charm of historic Tuscan style homes with heavily aged wooden doors and authentically handmade hardware that would not only be decorative but functional. The entry door was beautifully crafted by our finish carpenters in reclaimed oak on the exterior and smooth, clear alder on the inside to complement the interior of the home just as well as the exterior. Finishing the exterior of the door in a dark stain tied in well with the bronze lanterns and iron work throughout the home's exterior. Custom designed pull rings were hand-forged and are unique to this particular entry door project. They also needed a lot more furniture to fit the space that wouldn't make it look like a preschool. An eclectic mix of furniture was selected by my client, myself and an additional designer. Mid Century reproductions are mixed with modern designs from BluDot, and the Dulwich Extendable Table from Design Within Reach. Their Master Bedroom Suite was turned into a Hotel Suite.
