The mudroom received an updated palette that suited the coastal area, with fresh whites and navy. New sconces were added, as well as durable rugs for this high-traffic area that has entries from the back, front and garage. Additional storage was added with a free-standing bench seat, a great place to pull on boots in the winter. Pillows and local art soften the space. Custom hooks were designed to mark each cubby for Mom, Dad, Thing 1 & Thing 2.

Our client commissioned us to design and install a very high standard home automation system for Field House, a stunning home in north London. The works involved implementing the Savant control system to integrate Lutron lighting with lighting circuits, keypads. This also included audio distribution with audio zones with indoor and outdoor speakers and 5.1 Dolby Surround, along with video distribution to zones of 4K video. The Savant system also integrated zones of heating and cooling, automated door entry with doorstation and touchscreens controlling the automated gates with 4K security cameras. Delivering Field House to a high specification, 5 Bedrooms with ensuites were created along with a kitchen, dining, conservatory, family room, living room, office, gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and private park. The Field House project was delivered to a very high specification standard and was well received by the client.

This mid-century Cape Cod home in Dover received a beautiful new custom kitchen from Candelight Cabinetry last month. A galley kitchen is challenging to organize, but Mike made it more usable by adding a pull-out pantry, a tray base, and a double trash can rollout. The natural red birch cabinets give the kitchen a light, airy feel. The Cambria Colton quartz countertop, Blanco Cafe Brown farmhouse sink, and Top Knobs oil-rubbed bronze hardware from the Hudson line complete the kitchen well.

In this beautiful French Manor style home, we renovated the kitchen and butler’s pantry and created an office space and wet bar in a hallway. The black granite countertops and white cabinets are beautifully offset by black and gray mosaic backsplash behind the range and gold pendant lighting over the island. The huge window opens like an accordion, sliding completely open to the back garden. An arched doorway leads to an office and wet bar hallway, topped with a barrel ceiling and recessed lighting.

While most people in town considered this building a "tear-down", the new homeowners wanted to revive the property with an ambitions renovation and addition project. Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition.
In order to achieve these goals, our team studied how farm buildings evolve on a site over time. Additions are usually constructed based on need and function. With this protocol in mind, a grain silo was designed to act as our entry tower and buffer the intersection of the two buildings. The silo acts as our focal point and allowed us to construct very simple buildings to house the balance of the owner’s program. The team paid very close attention to scale, use of materials (many of which were recycled) and developed a vocabulary of modern interior detailing that would complement the original house.
Specific program requirements for the project included: large entertainment spaces, gourmet kitchen with adjacent family room, a squash court, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, master suite, and plenty of storage space. In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

The owner of this 1960s, low-slung house challenged Board & Vellum to give it a major overhaul. Located across from Puget Sound, the house already had a lot to offer but the dated style, low ceilings, tight spaces and interior walls that blocked Sound views kept it from fulfilling its full potential.
Board & Vellum gutted and reimagined the whole house, giving it a more traditional style. The interior—previously quite dark, thanks to brick- and wood panel-clad walls—was transformed with white trim, bright detailing (such as the hand-glazed tile in the kitchen), and plenty of built-in casework for the homeowner to display the travel mementos she collected throughout her career in the airline industry. Removing a fireplace in the center of the house and opening up the floorplan through to the staircase and entryway lets light flood in and allows for water views from across the main living area and kitchen.
The exterior of the house received a dose of character with brick, corbels, and a curved eyebrow roof above the front entry, which also gave the home office area its distinctive barrel ceiling.

After scoring this amazing home, the clients were excited for their new lakefront location, but the home's style and materials were tired and dated. There was way too much mauve granite, and the 90's building codes were no longer satisfactory.
Working as a team with Chuckanut Builders, Arbour North Architects and Smith and Vallee Woodworks, the home was gutted in order to prepare for a new interior layout, an addition to the second floor, and deep energy retrofits. Cork exterior insulation and new efficient windows were just two of the many upgrades this home received.
Throughout the interior, flat panel walnut cabinets were installed on top of white oak floors. White quartz countertops and simple subway tile kept the home clean and contemporary. The fireplace received a special large format tile, which highlighted the vaulted living room.

In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

Lincoln Lighthill Architect employed several discrete updates that collectively transform this existing row house.
At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight.
On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air.
Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat.
Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design.

This first floor remodel included the kitchen, powder room, mudroom, laundry room, living room and office. The bright, white kitchen is accented by gray-blue island with seating for four. We removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create an open floor plan. A special feature is the custom-made cherry desk and white built in shelving we created in the office. Located in the heart of a 1920’s urban neighborhood, this classically designed home went through a dramatic transformation. Several updates over the years had rendered the space dated and feeling disjointed. The main level received cosmetic updates to the kitchen, dining, formal living and family room to bring the decor out of the 90’s and into the 21st century. Space from a coat closet and laundry room was reallocated to the transformation of a storage closet into a stylish powder room. Upstairs, custom cabinetry, built-ins, along with fixture and material updates revamped the look and feel of the bedrooms and bathrooms. But the most striking alterations occurred on the home’s exterior, with the addition of a 24′ x 52′ pool complete with built-in tanning shelf, programmable LED lights and bubblers as well as an elevated spa with waterfall feature. A custom pool house was added to compliment the original architecture of the main home while adding a kitchenette, changing facilities and storage space to enhance the functionality of the pool area. The landscaping received a complete overhaul and Oaks Rialto pavers were added surrounding the pool, along with a lounge space shaded by a custom-built pergola. These renovations and additions converted this residence from well-worn to a stunning, urban oasis.

Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition.
