This classic post-and-beam house sits on a ridge in the Riviera neighborhood of Santa Barbara, CA. With stunning views of Gibraltar Rock, Mission Canyon, and Cielito Overlook, the house’s original designers sited it perfectly and implemented an elegantly simple structural system based on a clear design vision. Unfortunately, several subsequent owners lacked that same clarity and made questionable remodeling choices based on passing style fads, effectively turning the house into something it was not and – most perplexing of all – turning their backs to the majesty of the surrounding mountains and valley. Working with the new owner, who saw through the noise of these misguided remodels, we set out to return the house to its roots and recreate its rhythmic geometry and interior flow. We added new wall-to-wall double sliding doors that open to the expansive northern views, bringing space and light to the living, dining, and kitchen areas and providing easy access to the surrounding natural environment. We also reconsidered the color palette and materials, simplified detailing and trim, and highlighted interior focal points such as the original slump block fireplace and newly remodeled kitchen. The house now entertains easily and provides a comfortable and gracious living space for its owner and guests.

A large mirror backed wood carving adds a touch of sparkle and intrigue above the master bath’s soaking tub while concealing an inappropriate marble mosaic that failed to enhance the space. Limestone baseboards, door and window casings were added to upgrade the bath, requiring less maintenance.

The design of this 5,000 square foot house was born of a tragic fire that destroyed the bulk of the house. Only the side flanking wings were able to be saved. The main body of the house was and garage were all reconsidered in their design. The result is a hybrid log/conventional construction assembly that looks nothing like the kit house that once stood between the two ends. The new work maintains the owner’s desire for a rustic aesthetic and utilizes massing, scale and rhythm more appropriate to the environment, the owner’s intended uses and character. A rich blend of stone, log, and cedar shingles make for a design palette that is both rustic and refined at the same moment. The house employs both geothermal and solar applications. The geothermal assembly is located in an adjacent field and together with the solar panel system offer little or no electrical load needed from the Grid to either heat or light the building. The owner enjoys a consistent selling of electricity to the PUD proving that large well detailed wood buildings can successfully deliver on thermal performance and timeless aesthetic character. To achieve the gourmet kitchen of this homeowner's dreams, we removed a walk-in pantry in favour of additional perimeter cabinetry, extended to the ceiling and adding glass inserts to showcase their favourite pieces. The island was also elongated to add additional seating, integrating the adjacent seating area to create one large kitchen space. The existing basement had the furnace, hot water tank and plumbing located at the foot of the stairs, with a narrow stairway entry. When designing the finished space, we first carefully reconsidered the home's mechanical systems. Relocating and enclosing them within one dedicated room created the opportunity for open concept living at the base of the stairs, while maintaining ample space for a new bedroom and three-piece bathroom.
