Central El Paso Backyard Renovation:
Fifteen years is a long time for a backyard to quietly wait.
At first, it was full of intention—a pool that promised summers, laughter, and long evenings. But time has a way of settling in. The water turned still, then green. Edges cracked. The space became less of a destination and more of something you looked past. Life moved forward, but the backyard stayed behind.
Then came the decision: it was time.
Not a patch job. Not a quick fix. A complete reset.
The transformation didn’t begin beautifully—it began with demolition. The old pool was drained, exposing years of neglect etched into its surface. Crews stepped in, breaking, clearing, reshaping. What once held stagnant water became an open cavity of possibility. Steel rebar formed a new skeleton, precise and intentional. Every line measured. Every elevation reconsidered.
This wasn’t just construction—it was rethinking how the space should live.
The shell was rebuilt. Surfaces were refined. Plumbing, structure, and flow were corrected at their core. What had once been outdated and failing was now engineered to last.
Then the shift happened.
Hardscape came in—clean, warm-toned concrete replacing worn decking. Stone walls, once just boundaries, were elevated into features. Subtle textures, intentional lines. A visual language that matched the architecture of the home instead of competing with it.
The pool returned—but not as it was.
Now it was sharp, modern, and inviting. A long, clean body of water with a shallow tanning ledge that catches the sun just right. Stainless steel scuppers arc water into the pool—movement, sound, life. Steps are crisp, geometry is balanced, and the water reflects clarity instead of neglect.
Around it, the yard found purpose.
Artificial turf introduced contrast—green, controlled, low-maintenance. A pergola structure rose in the corner, creating a destination within the destination. Beneath it, a built-in outdoor kitchen turned the backyard into a place to gather, not just pass through. Lighting stitched everything together, making the space just as alive at dusk as it is under the midday sun.
By the end, nothing felt accidental.
What was once forgotten is now deliberate. What was once avoided is now the center of attention.
Fifteen years later, the backyard didn’t just come back—it finally became what it was always supposed to be.

Living beyond the walls of your home fabulously was made as seamlessly as possible by Outdoor Kitchen designer Michael Gotowala founder of THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN DESIGN STORE by PREFERRED PROPERTIES as the materials chosen were the same bricks as used on the house. Many of the rooms of this 10,000 sq ft house all point visibly to this outdoor kitchen terrace complete with outdoor grill island, warming drawer, side burner on one end of the terrace. A complete stand alone bar with top shelf and kegarator off the entry door on the other side of the terrace making a nice comforting outdoor living space for the family of eight. The black fleck granite softens the brick and makes for a great cooking, and conversing platform. The outdoor appliance line for this particular project was VIKING. This Edina, MN project started when the client’s contacted me about their desire to create a family friendly entertaining space as well as a great place to entertain friends. The site amenities that were incorporated into the landscape design-build include a swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor dining space with grill/kitchen/bar combo, a mortared stone wood burning fireplace, and a pool house.
The house was built in 2015 and the rear yard was left essentially as a clean slate. Existing construction consisted of a covered screen porch with screens opening out to another covered space. Both were built with the floor constructed of composite decking (low lying deck, one step off to grade). The deck also wrapped over to doorways out of the kitchenette & dining room. This open amount of deck space allowed us to reconsider the furnishings for dining and how we could incorporate the bar and outdoor kitchen. We incorporated a self-contained spa within the deck to keep it closer to the house for winter use. It is surrounded by a raised masonry seating wall for “hiding” the spa and comfort for access. The deck was dis-assembled as needed to accommodate the masonry for the spa surround, bar, outdoor kitchen & re-built for a finished look as it attached back to the masonry.
The layout of the 20’x48’ swimming pool was determined in order to accommodate the custom pool house & rear/side yard setbacks. The client wanted to create ample space for chaise loungers & umbrellas as well as a nice seating space for the custom wood burning fireplace. Raised masonry walls are used to define these areas and give a sense of space. The pool house is constructed in line with the swimming pool on the deep/far end.
The swimming pool was installed with a concrete subdeck to allow for a custom stone coping on the pool edge. The patio material and coping are made out of 24”x36” Ardeo Limestone. 12”x24” Ardeo Limestone is used as veneer for the masonry items. The fireplace is a main focal point, so we decided to use a different veneer than the other masonry areas so it could stand out a bit more.
The clients have been enjoying all of the new additions to their dreamy coastal backyard. All of the elements flow together nicely and entertaining family and friends couldn’t be easier in this beautifully remodeled space.

In the well-used adjoining breakfast room, we added an iconic Serena & Lily marble bistro table and Riviera rattan dining chairs. The open-cage, Diego Giacometti-inspired pendant with four elegant, floral blooms in an antique-burnished brass finish pairs well with the pen and ink botanical prints. The sitting room’s crown jewel is the cloverleaf ottoman upholstered in an unexpected woven-zebra velvet. After showing my client the fabric, I learned it was discontinued at the production mill. Not knowing how long it would take the company to find another mill, I suggested reconsidering the choice. But my smitten client was determined to have it - and it was well worth the wait.
Four classic club chairs nestle the ottoman inviting family conversation; a special point of interest is that there are no televisions in any of the family living spaces.
The “Gem Modern Vine Chandelier” by Hammerton offers an intriguing juxtaposition of organic and geometric design to the vaulted ceiling. The expansive windows were left uncovered to bring in as much natural light as possible while offering a verdant view of the lush backyard.

Old Lyme, CT. Prime property for good reason, beach homes beckon you outside by appealing to the senses. The lulling sounds of rolling waves, the beauty of a seemingly eternal body of water, the salty smell of evening breezes, and the tickle of changing terrain underfoot all make waterside setups particularly peaceful. So with sand and sea bumping up to their backyard, these Connecticut homeowners were ready to max out their space for maximum outdoor living. To take on the transformation, they hired designer Michael Gotowala, president of Preferred Properties Landscaping & Masonry.
Multiple terraces of stone and granite patios feature a breakfast nook, seating under a sail-inspired cloth shade, fire pit, and hot tub installed in stone. The outdoor kitchen’s design is especially distinct for two reasons: One, this section is built out and fully finished with stone and granite, and two, the space is sunken into the landscape to block the wind and protect from the elements.
Outfitted with all the appliances needed for gourmet grilling in the great outdoors, additional amenities such as the gas fireplace for warmth and ambiance as well as a granite surround for seating complete this Connecticut cookery for optimum outdoor living. A family kitchen, richly reconsidered as the heart of a restored Los Angeles home. A single counterstanding cupboard and open shelving encourage the airiness drawn from the sun-drenched greenery outside.
The detailed ‘Delft by Plain English’ backsplash and delicate pendant lights offer a whimsical compliment to the sophisticated cupboard exteriors painted in “Chop.” A central island with a nook for seating and a generous breakfast banquette allow easy meals and dinner prep conversation.
What was once an underutilized closet is transformed into a walk-in pantry partitioned with glazed screens. A cohesive palette of “Mash” by Plain English and Farrow & Ball’s “Lamp Room Grey” carry a softness and warmth with the traveling light.
Tucked away near the cooker is a Larder room drenched in “Boiled Egg,” ready for offloading groceries and pantry goods from the entrance.

The design of this 5,000 square foot house was born of a tragic fire that destroyed the bulk of the house. Only the side flanking wings were able to be saved. The main body of the house was and garage were all reconsidered in their design. The result is a hybrid log/conventional construction assembly that looks nothing like the kit house that once stood between the two ends. The new work maintains the owner’s desire for a rustic aesthetic and utilizes massing, scale and rhythm more appropriate to the environment, the owner’s intended uses and character.
A rich blend of stone, log, and cedar shingles make for a design palette that is both rustic and refined at the same moment.
The house employs both geothermal and solar applications. The geothermal assembly is located in an adjacent field and together with the solar panel system offer little or no electrical load needed from the Grid to either heat or light the building. The owner enjoys a consistent selling of electricity to the PUD proving that large well detailed wood buildings can successfully deliver on thermal performance and timeless aesthetic character.

To achieve the gourmet kitchen of this homeowner's dreams, we removed a walk-in pantry in favour of additional perimeter cabinetry, extended to the ceiling and adding glass inserts to showcase their favourite pieces. The island was also elongated to add additional seating, integrating the adjacent seating area to create one large kitchen space.
The existing basement had the furnace, hot water tank and plumbing located at the foot of the stairs, with a narrow stairway entry. When designing the finished space, we first carefully reconsidered the home's mechanical systems. Relocating and enclosing them within one dedicated room created the opportunity for open concept living at the base of the stairs, while maintaining ample space for a new bedroom and three-piece bathroom.
