PENNSYLVANIA BARN A century-old barn was meticulously documented, disassembled, and transported from Pennsylvania to a farm in Alabama. In its new location, local stone serves as a base for the reconstructed barn that provides areas for a guest suite, storage, and parking. A craftsman from Pennsylvania was recruited to ensure that the barn’s structure and joinery were consistent with its original construction. The center of the home is anchored by a Russian stove that sits in the open barn frame and heats the entire house. The bedroom suite is designed as a discrete loft space to allow for privacy from the main living area. A rooftop “lantern” was added along with open porches to bring light into the interiors. Artifacts recovered from the barn’s original site were also utilized within the home, such as the frame of an old wagon that now hangs above the kitchen.

When this historic Petoskey home began its life in 1895, its residents couldn't possibly have imagined its future transformation. Only 50 feet from the old train tracks, it started as an apartment building for railroad employees. Throughout the past century, it retained its roots as a multi-family dwelling, but had fallen into despair. In 2013, it was purchased for its great location, charming exterior and its spectacular view of the lake, and recruited J.Cesario Builders to remodel the structure into a single family home. An octagonal, three-story turret with full windows was added to the Northwest corner in order to capture the bay views. The vision would take almost two years to complete, as the original scope of the project evolved from a partial remodel into a total home transformation.

This unique project has heavy Asian influences due to the owner’s strong connection to Indonesia, along with a Mountain West flare creating a unique and rustic contemporary composition. This mountain contemporary residence is tucked into a mature ponderosa forest in the beautiful high desert of Flagstaff, Arizona. The site was instrumental on the development of our form and structure in early design. The 60 to 100 foot towering ponderosas on the site heavily impacted the location and form of the structure. The Asian influence combined with the vertical forms of the existing ponderosa forest led to the Flagstaff House trending towards a horizontal theme.

Aesthetically pleasing, but the ability to work well with the children, the landscape architect was recruited to design an exterior space. This space harmoniously blends the architecture of the landscape with the architecture of the home, while being mindful that the space needs to function like a park. The overall goal was to make the outside as comfortable as the interior spaces.
