Refreshingly bright and airy, the master bedroom was designed with retreat in mind. With five children in the house at the time, Raymond and Jennifer immediately recognized the need for their own floor and claimed the third story for themselves. "It's definitely so high up that it makes it easy to get away," Jennifer explains. "I open the windows that face the lake and just listen to the waves break, and catch a minute." The palladian window is generously sized, filling the room with light and the sounds of nature.
The headboard was another piece salvaged and put to a new use. The old barn door was purchased from Jennifer's friend that was moving her store front and no longer had use for it. Seeing its potential, Jennifer and her sister committed to a two-hour journey of getting the door up to the top floor. Paired with white walls and linens, the character of the wood grounds the space with richness and warmth.

In keeping with the concept of recycling the barn's original materials, Franklin cut and refinished old beams for the new stairs. Coupled with white steel stringers and rails, the stairs, which are made up of oak, hickory and black walnut species, define the old-meets-new aesthetic of the home's design.

The remaining products and materials were sourced locally and made in the USA whenever possible, to lower the carbon footprint and support local manufacturers and artisans.

A few years after installation. This DIY project won an award from the area's HOA. A water thirsty lawn was replaced with drought tolerant plants. A concrete walkway from the driveway to the front door was removed in large pieces. The pieces, also known as urbanite, were used to create a low berm wall as well as two faux flagstone areas. The first provided a small patio while the second allowed for space to step out of the car. Permeable decomposed granite was used for a new entryway to the front door. The division of space creates a front yard that looks larger than it really is.
