A two-story restaurant and bar in the heart of Rochester Hills approached Horizon Interior Design with an exciting design brief to pay homage to the American-style food they served with a 1940's retro redesign. The new tenants had some great ideas for fresh paint, décor, a mural of a vintage plane, and a female pilot in a pinup style reminiscent of the 1940s. They wanted to keep their flooring and furnishings as is, challenging us to create a harmonious design while incorporating what they already had. Using vintage magazines, newspapers, and posters from the 1940s, as well as replicas of old décor and wall art, we brought the 40's back to this commercial restaurant's interior design! Adding deep red and white accents to the navy blue walls created a patriotic feel, while a hand-painted distressed American flag hung over the bar for that extra touch of 40's magic. We painted a magnificent wall mural of a jet and pilot, applied shiplap to the front of the bar and an accent wall, and then decorated it with vintage tin signs from the 1940's. We installed luxurious vintage-style chandeliers on both floors, illuminated with Edison bulbs to warm up the dining areas and bring a sense of grandeur to the space. The flowers are purple wave petunias and Red Begonias. Red Canna Lillies are behind the fountain in sweet flag grass. Palm trees are in the back and a Crimson Queen Japanese Maple is on the left.

Making a big impact in a tiny space by creating layers with stacked art, wicker furniture & accessories, and antique lake life decor. A great little moment before entering one of the primary guest bedroom suites in the home.

Food Heaven & Hell London Brothers’ bistro design concept started from the menu.“Food Heaven & Food Hell” made us immediately think of duality and also link it to British flag’s colors. It felt natural to divide the space into two almost symmetrical sides, and play with the blue-red color scheme. In all restaurant projects we try to reflect the spirit of the place, so we opted for a contemporary design with industrial touches. We played with contrasting tones and textures: metal and greys, warm wood and plants. Since the space was not generous to begin with, we descided to spice things up. Wall art in intense colors and using the ceiling for wood decoration. As for the sitting area, benches combined with chairs is the best option to save space. The lamps were chosen for their double role: functionality and decorative as a little bit of greenery is always welcomed. The recipe was a success – yet we believe the best thing here is the delicious menu.

This Martha's Vineyard style custom home includes many elements that establish a traditional East Coast home: white horizontal clapboard siding, tapered wood columns, shutters and red brick wainscoting. The predominantly red, white and blue color scheme honors the history of America, and a handmade American flag quilt underscores the theme. The outdoor space expands the living area, yet still feels intimate and contained.
