Appalchian Red Redbud

Hello spring in client's side garden. Redbud tree, serviceberry, azalea, groundcovers, hosta. Flagstone path and seating.

Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) is an ideal tree for small spaces. It has a somewhat architectural form that fills with delightful - and edible and delicious! - pink flowers in winter. With branches bare, it allows heat to enter adjacent structures. In spring and summer, its abundant heart-shaped leaves provide shade and seasonal color. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography

This project was an LED upgrade and repair to an older, existing outdoor lighting system that was in not working. Many of the lighting wires had been cut and a good many of the fixtures needed to be relocated due to the more mature landscape. The system was cleaned, repaired and the old halogen lamps were replaced with high quality, energy efficient, LED lamps. This fortunate homeowner will now get to enjoy night after night of flawless light around the garden and pool spaces, and not have to worry about changing a bulb on this current system ever again. It's easy to focus on Redbud's candy-pink (and edible!) spring blooms, yet its fall color is equally spectacular. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography
Inspiration for a landscaping in Los Angeles for fall.

The star of the back yard is Western Redbud / Cercis occidentalis. It flowers briefly at the end of winter; then heart-shaped leaves appear and turn a soft yellow fall color.

Western Redbud brings beautiful, ever-evolving seasonal color to LA gardens. In spring, its heart-shaped leaves begin to join cotton-candy colored bunches of blooms on its delicate branches. Those blooms are more than pretty in pink - they are edible and add a delightful crunch to spring salads.

This entrance draws visitors to the front door past a flowering redbud and along a stone path. The low stone wall and boxwood hedge create a private courtyard leading to the family entrance. Westchester Landscape Designer- Verdant View LLC.
