Beautiful hardwoods were featured in custom designed cabinetry and niches. Wide plank European oak replaced carpet, newly fabricated porcelain countertops were installed throughout, and sculptural light fixtures were hung in cavernous spaces, highlighting new outlooks. Our client’s preference for simple yet sophisticated style enabled us to set the tone by creating an elegant backdrop for a new collection of fine art and sculpture, which quietly takes center stage.

Zero-VOC paints were used, a nontoxic, water-based finish was applied to natural wood cabinetry and floors, and custom upholstery was made from fire-retardant-free foams and FSC-certified woods, eliminating harmful chemicals from the home without sacrificing a trace of design.

Some of the many features include water saving faucets, strategically placed vinyl low E impact casement windows to allow plenty of natural day light to enter thereby reducing the need for artificial lighting, top quality Mohawk finish flooring, Cambria solid surface counter tops, super insulated and tight thermal envelop reducing air leakage, two 14 SEER Carrier high efficiency heat pumps, master bedroom walk in closet 11'x 10', over sized utility room with built in ironing board, 340 square foot covered lanai overlooking a lovely back yard filled with natural Florida drought resistant landscaping. Other interesting features include a exposed block stair tower designed to act as a thermal chimney allowing hot air to escape through an electronically controlled skylight and drawing cool air from below thereby creating an internal breeze, metal stairs with exposed risers, a rain water harvesting system to allow the use of recycled rain water for plants and garden, and concrete driveway with green dividers to minimize storm water run.

The goal set by the owners, a couple with farm family backgrounds, for a vacation and ultimately retirement home on 30 acres in the Mount Washington Valley was a high performance, low maintenance, Greek Revival inspired farmstead. The program included an open plan living/dining/kitchen area, first floor master suite, open and screen porches, mudroom, second floor guest bedrooms, and a barn to house farm equipment, recreational vehicles and a bocce court.
The building envelope includes continuously insulated R-32 walls, R-60 roof, R-18 foundation walls, and R-20 under the basement slab. Dense packed cellulose in wall and roof assemblies minimized the use of spray foam. A blower door test of 0.76 ACH50 confirmed a tightly constructed envelope. Traditional details, using non-traditional synthetic and composite products, were developed to clad the exterior and a 23 kW PV array was added to the south facing barn roof.
Energy efficient heating and cooling systems, along with balanced ventilation using an energy recovery ventilator (ERV), were integrated with the interiors. The second floor hallway is partitioned off from the stair to reduce heating and cooling loads when the guest rooms aren’t occupied. All LED lighting, including a cove light tucked into custom ceiling moldings, and Energy Star appliances reduced the electrical load. Two 30-yard containers of wood, plastic and cardboard were recycled during construction. The home achieved a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rating of -30 (negative 30!), an order of magnitude below the 52 HERS average for New Hampshire and climate zone 6A in 2020. The electric meter has been running backward since the project was completed.
The result is a home that is healthy, comfortable, durable, and efficient, with electricity produced on site that more than offsets its use of fossil fuels.

In keeping with ADA compliance guidelines, we designed reduced-height cabinetry into this bathroom renovation with a deep 9″ high toe kick. We also created a zero clearance threshold shower. A wheelchair radius of 78 inches allowed space for ease of movement between essential features in the bathroom, to include the sink, toilet, shower, and soaking tub. The tile was also intentionally chosen for the bathroom for its aesthetics, wearability, and easy-to-clean properties.

LEED-H Platinum, Net-Positive Energy
OVERVIEW. This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse ties into the cultural landscape of Lincoln, Massachusetts - a town known for its rich history, farming traditions, conservation efforts, and visionary architecture. The goal was to design and build a new single family home on 1.8 acres that respects the neighborhood’s agrarian roots, produces more energy than it consumes, and provides the family with flexible spaces to live-play-work-entertain. The resulting 2,800 SF home is proof that families do not need to compromise on style, space or comfort in a highly energy-efficient and healthy home.
CONNECTION TO NATURE. The attached garage is ubiquitous in new construction in New England’s cold climate. This home’s barn-inspired garage is intentionally detached from the main dwelling. A covered walkway connects the two structures, creating an intentional connection with the outdoors between auto and home.
FUNCTIONAL FLEXIBILITY. With a modest footprint, each space must serve a specific use, but also be flexible for atypical scenarios. The Mudroom serves everyday use for the couple and their children, but is also easy to tidy up to receive guests, eliminating the need for two entries found in most homes. A workspace is conveniently located off the mudroom; it looks out on to the back yard to supervise the children and can be closed off with a sliding door when not in use. The Away Room opens up to the Living Room for everyday use; it can be closed off with its oversized pocket door for secondary use as a guest bedroom with en suite bath.
NET POSITIVE ENERGY. The all-electric home consumes 70% less energy than a code-built house, and with measured energy data produces 48% more energy annually than it consumes, making it a 'net positive' home.
