We started with the idea of a hipped-roof pavilion with deep, overhanging eaves—a reference to the prairie style architecture prevalent in the owners’ native Chicago, and a form that tends to visually reduce a home’s scale.

From the front, we pay careful attention to the massing of the upper and lower stories. A large second floor mass is broken down to smaller elements, thereby keeping in scale with the neighborhood. The second floor is stepped back from the first floor, further reducing the impact from the street. A porch is used to transition from the public street to the private home...

This shingle style home was built in the Dana Hall neighborhood in Wellesley. Particular emphasis was placed on siting the home to reduce the roof ridge height so that it scaled properly with the surrounding neighborhood. This home contains approximately 6,900 square feet of living space and includes 5 bedrooms (all with en-suite baths), a finished lower level and a dramatic, 2 sided open staircase that provides great flow through the home.

We did a full roof replacement and upgraded the gutters to 6 inch and added leaf guards as well. We also upgraded the roof ventilation system with solar powered fan vents so help the roof last much longer, and reduce the heat in the attic.

Engineered cedar siding creates beautiful gray-blue tones at the exterior of the home, while adding a textural element to activate the simple exterior design.

An understated single car carriage garage door and long front porch greet visitors to this two-story home. Stone plynths highlight the porch columns. A smaller second floor and wide porch overhang give the home a horizontal emphasis to reduce the sense of visual height of the facade.

Our tiny home in motion – nearly every feature shown is made possible by plastics, including the vinyl plastic siding and trim, vinyl plastic window frames, engineered plastic solar shingles and the tough polycarbonate plastic skylight. All these features help make the house more efficient, weather resistant and help reduce required maintenance.

On the right side of the photo, you see a covered side porch entry that leads into the mudroom & open kitchen. The gable roofline, water tables, and shed dormers not only reduces the scale of the home but give the form visual interest and charm.

Rosenberg Kolb Architects is proud to announce our renovation of a 1747 timber frame house on Nantucket Island, completed in 2011. The first historic renovation project in Nantucket to receive LEED Gold status. The project was given a Grand Award by Eco Home Magazine in July, 2011.
The project included:
Restructuring the foundations to align and stabilize the structure in addition to providing for a new insulated crawl space;
A 260 square foot addition for a kitchen, bath, and new entry;
New cedar shingles, roof shingles, and restored historic windows;
The house met the strict regulations of Nantucket's Historic District.
On the inside, LEED Gold certification was met through:
High R-value insulation and reduced air leakage;
High efficiency heating, air conditioning, plumbing fixtures, and appliances;
Low-emission paints and finishes as well as a clay wall finish;
Using reclaimed materials from the original house and other sites.
