Inspiration for an eclectic bedroom remodel in San Francisco

The shelving in this small linen closet was replaced with the customizable Boaxel system from Ikea. The shelf heights are adjustable using brackets, allowing for the storage of unusually sized items (such as the vacuum), as well as the potential for adding additional shelves in the future. Wire shelving was chosen to reduce the need to dust and to improve light penetration into the closet. The colour uniformity of the blankets, sheets, pillow cases, bath and hand towels, and table linens in this closet, along with the square woven baskets in natural tones, help to create a cohesive finished look.

The large corner tub and angled shower created a choppy feel and made the room feel smaller. Aligning the redesigned shower and the new drop-in tub flush against the wall makes for a much more uniform look. The beautiful design details of this space include frameless glass encasing the shower, a custom shower bench to match the granite vanity counter tops, and glass mosaic accent tiles. The original island size was reduced to create wider walkways. The smaller more streamlined island enables the owners to have ample room to cook together, and without the bulk of the larger island, the entire Kitchen is more spacious, visually and functionally.

Images by Nic LeHoux Designed as a home and studio for a photographer and his young family, Lightbox is located on a peninsula that extends south from British Columbia across the border to Point Roberts. The densely forested site lies beside a 180-acre park that overlooks the Strait of Georgia, the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound. Having experienced the world from under a black focusing cloth and large format camera lens, the photographer has a special fondness for simplicity and an appreciation of unique, genuine and well-crafted details. The home was made decidedly modest, in size and means, with a building skin utilizing simple materials in a straightforward yet innovative configuration. The result is a structure crafted from affordable and common materials such as exposed wood two-bys that form the structural frame and directly support a prefabricated aluminum window system of standard glazing units uniformly sized to reduce the complexity and overall cost. Accessed from the west on a sloped boardwalk that bisects its two contrasting forms, the house sits lightly on the land above the forest floor. A south facing two-story glassy cage for living captures the sun and view as it celebrates the interplay of light and shadow in the forest. To the north, stairs are contained in a thin wooden box stained black with a traditional Finnish pine tar coating. Narrow apertures in the otherwise solid dark wooden wall sharply focus the vibrant cropped views of the old growth fir trees at the edge of the deep forest. Lightbox is an uncomplicated yet powerful gesture that enables one to view the subtlety and beauty of the site while providing comfort and pleasure in the constantly changing light of the forest.

This living space features a dual-layer window treatment designed for modern elegance, light control, and soft warmth. Key Features: Sheer Ripplefold Drapery: Floor-to-ceiling sheer drapery panels hang in uniform, flowing waves on a low-profile ceiling track, softening the patio view without blocking natural light. Motorized Solar Screen Roman Shades: Installed on adjacent windows, flat motorized solar shades lower effort-free to filter sunlight, eliminate TV glare, and reduce heat gain. Architectural Integration: The track and shade mountings keep hardware subtle and uncluttered, framing the open living room layout.

This single family home sits on a tight, sloped site. Within a modest budget, the goal was to provide direct access to grade at both the front and back of the house. The solution is a multi-split-level home with unconventional relationships between floor levels. Between the entrance level and the lower level of the family room, the kitchen and dining room are located on an interstitial level. Within the stair space “floats” a small bathroom. The generous stair is celebrated with a back-painted red glass wall which treats users to changing refractive ambient light throughout the house. Black brick, grey-tinted glass and mirrors contribute to the reasonably compact massing of the home. A cantilevered upper volume shades south facing windows and the home’s limited material palette meant a more efficient construction process. Cautious landscaping retains water run-off on the sloping site and home offices reduce the client’s use of their vehicle. This early 90's contemporary home was in need of some major updates and when my clients purchased it they were ready to make it their own. The home features large open rooms, great natural light and stunning views of Lake Washington. These clients love bold vibrant colors and clean modern lines so the goal was to incorporate those in the design without it overwhelming the space. Balance was key. The end goal was for the home to feel open and airy yet warm and inviting. This was achieved by bringing in punches of color to an otherwise white or neutral palate. Texture and visual interest were achieved throughout the house through the use of wallpaper, fabrics, and a few one of a kind artworks.
