Nestled in a serene forest clearing in Pine, CO, our client envisioned a deck that would harmonize with the natural beauty of the surrounding pine trees, providing a tranquil retreat for relaxation. To bring this vision to life, we designed and constructed a deck that seamlessly blends with its environment. We incorporated natural log posts, sourced locally, to serve as the deck’s supports, enhancing the rustic aesthetic and creating a cohesive connection with the forested landscape. For the decking and fascia, we selected brown composite materials that emulate the appearance of natural wood while offering superior durability and minimal maintenance. This choice ensures the deck withstands the elements and retains its beauty over time without the need for regular upkeep. We had a several challenges to face with this project. Not only did we need to update a dated landscape to accommodate two seemingly different design tastes (modern & minimalistic vs natural english garden), we were tasked with improving the property’s drainage, improving the driveway access, reducing water usage and plant maintenance, and fixing a crumbling wall. To marry the two design tastes, we started with the more modern elements of metal planters and softened the landscape with mass plantings of ornamental grasses and native sedge. These grasses act as a turf replacement that do not need to be mowed and require less regular watering. On each side of the yard we constructed new cedar fences to provide updated and additional privacy. In addition, we poured a new concrete wall to replace the existing retaining wall and play off the new modern vibe.

The rear of this Central Street Neighborhood yard floods regularly during heavy rains. Rather than fight mother nature, Prassas Landscape Studio created a rain garden to store excess stormwater until it can percolate into the soil. The rain garden is also fed by the roof’s runoff and basement’s sump pump through a contemporary steel runnel. Stone steppers penetrate a curved wall to lead to the back firepit seating area.
