A 1929 urban Bungalow well preserved save for the kitchen. The kitchen had been twice remodeled – most recently in the 1970’s by previous homeowners. Our clients wished to restore the original Craftsman-era charm to their kitchen (which adjoined the dining room and was visible from the front entry). At the same time, our clients were looking to increase the functionality of the kitchen space and create additional seating for frequent dinner guests. Our clients’ tight budget restricted the finish pallet to rather simple options, but that simplicity became the project’s strength. Custom cabinets (using FSC-certified maple) were designed with simple flat panel doors and fabricated using dove-tail joinery as was typical of Bungalow cabinetry. Red oak, stained to match the home’s original millwork was used to construct the cabinet lowers and a new bench to create continuity with the remainder of the home. Carrara marble, authentic to the 1920s period, was used to aesthetically brighten the space. Cabinet uppers were enameled in a historically appropriate cream hue to compliment the countertop stone. The backsplash tile was selected to pay tribute to the home’s original 1929 wall color – found beneath several layers of wallpaper during demolition. Walls were painted a bold, but historically, accurate, copper color (a perfect compliment the red oak cabinetry and trim). Lighting issues in this north-facing kitchen were addressed using hidden over-cabinet lights, task-specific under-cabinet lighting, sink cans and several period fixtures – hand fashioned by a local artisan specializing in historic reproductions to complete the bungalow look and honor the Arts-n-Crafts practice of using local craftsman. Simple and practical…in budget and in period. To solve the seating issue, a new bench (with storage below) was custom built to span the 12’ dining room wall – allowing plenty of room for family and guests alike during dinner. The larger kitchen approach provided room for a new serve-through with counter seating where snacks, homework, and spill-over food prep can occur. No new square footage… six new seats! To solve storage needs, the base cabinets in the kitchen were designed 3” deeper than standard 24” box cabinets and a new 28” deep pantry added allowing some of the wasted space at the center of this square kitchen to be used more efficiently. A tall backsplash capped with a 4” ledge provides a place for all of the inevitable items that clutter valuable counter real estate (cooking timers, seasoning jars, etc …) Specialized, task-specific storage - the highlight of Bungalow kitchens - was incorporated throughout: 1) An angled cabinet, built to accommodate an awkward side door location, now holds a trash can, tin-lined recycling bins, and a knife drawer; 2) A difficult deep corner necessitated by the 28” deep fridge gave rise to open cookbook shelves, an appliance cubby and narrow, and a deep pantry with full-extension roll-out trays; 3) An open pot & pan rack, built-in wall spice cabinet, kid-height microwave (a special request from our clients), customized cell-phone/electronics storage, built-in chalk board message center, and new rear entry coat/backpack storage with cork board complete the net storage gain. No new square footage … lots of new, innovative, high-functioning storage.

This kitchen replaced the one original to this 1963 built residence. The now empty nester couple entertain frequently including their large extended family during the holidays. Separating work and social spaces was as important as crafting a space that was conducive to their love of cooking and hanging with family and friends. Simple lines, simple cleanup, and classic tones create an environment that will be in style for many years. Subtle unique touches like the painted wood ceiling, pop up island receptacle/usb and receptacles/usb hidden at the bottom of the upper cabinets add functionality and intrigue. Ample LED lighting on dimmers both ceiling and undercabinet mounted provide ample task lighting. SubZero 42” refrigerator, 36” Viking Range, island pendant lights by Restoration Hardware. The ceiling is framed with white cove molding, the dark colored beadboard actually elevates the feeling of height. It was sanded and spray painted offsite with professional automotive paint equipment. It reflects light beautifully. No one expects this kind of detail and it has been quite fun watching people’s reactions to it. There are white painted perimeter cabinets and Walnut stained island cabinets. A high gloss, mostly white floor was installed from the front door, down the foyer hall and into the kitchen. This display features River Run Cabinetry, a factory line of cabinets which Dimensions in Wood offers as an inexpensive alternative to 100% custom cabinetry. This kitchen display showcases an available spice pull out on the left, a pull out a trash can drawer on the right. A tall pantry showcases the very versatile adjustable rollout system with soft close trays to maximize your food storage space. Laminate countertop features a crescent edge, complimented by an integrated, stainless steel Karran sink. Above the sink are two floating shelves which feature LED Task Lighting beneath them to display your aesthetic pieces. The sink front has a Rev-a-Shelf tip out tray for out of sight, convenient storage of kitchen items like sponges, sink stoppers, or anything. The wall cabinet sports an under-mount Task Lighting angled power strip with USB power ports to charge all your devices. The black and white 3 inch by 6 inch gloss backsplash tiles, installed in a stacked pattern, add a little whimsy to the overall space.

This was a 150-year-old farmhouse and our client wanted to enlarge her small kitchen. We started this remodel by removing the 11 feet of wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the space. That was a load-bearing wall, so we had a structural engineer design what was needed for support and a large steel beam was installed. The exterior walls were solid brick, which made it a real challenge to change electrical switches and outlets, plumbing and hanging cabinets. For the new cabinets, they went with our Lincoln door in maple and an Alabaster color from our Kitchen Solvers Classic Collection. We installed stacked wall cabinets with mostly glass doors on the tops. Most of the base cabinets had drawers or roll out trays. We also installed a spice rack pullout, double trash pullout, U-shaped pullout under the sink, and cutlery dividers. Our client really wanted a hood above the range, so we moved the microwave into a base cabinet. For the island, we raised it 4” higher for a more comfortable working height and to allow for taller bar stools. For the countertops, they picked a beautiful quartz in the Mercer design, while the backsplash was done in a grey ceramic subway tile. To finish this transformation, we added Task low voltage tape lighting under the upper cabinets, in the top cabinets and in the toe kick. Lighting was also added to the back side of the island near the bottom of the base cabinets which brightened the stool area. Just look at this amazing kitchen transformation.
