The Renewed Character Interior Design project transformed an older home into a bright, functional space designed for modern living. The renovation focused on improving flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, adding integrated storage, and updating finishes throughout the home. Thoughtful space planning, custom cabinetry, white oak flooring, and refreshed bathrooms create a home that feels welcoming, practical, and true to its original architectural character.

This contemporary bathroom starts with a neutral pallet of white and gray, and then layers on a deep navy blue which brings in contrast and color. This bathroom brings in lots of natural light, has ample cabinet counter and drawer space, a generous walk-in shower, and lots of hidden storage. The marble hexagon floor inlay brings a geometric elegance to the space.

Vision for Renewal: Embracing Modernity While Honoring History Built in the heart of a community renowned for its dedication to Mid-Century Modern architecture, this home has stood the test of time. Its original design, characterized by open spaces, flat planes, and vast use of single-paned glass, aimed to merge indoor and outdoor living. However, decades had taken their toll. The home featured inefficient materials and outdated layouts that no longer met the needs of modern homeownership. The renovation aimed to preserve the home’s unique architectural features but update its functionality for modern living. The homeowner, Stacy Kosis of Nook Design Collective, is a seasoned designer with over 19 years in the industry. She deeply appreciates Mid-Century Modern aesthetics and served as Director of Design with a Colorado custom home builder before branching out on her own two years ago. Kosis embarked on this ambitious project to breathe new life into a structure many saw beyond repair. The complete gut renovation was done in 8 months which is a huge testament to the Kosis’ skill and knowledge in design and construction. Her background experience and knowledge of NanaWall systems reliability and performance in previous projects were instrumental in her approach.

The shiplap hood and apron front sink speak to the Modern Farmhouse design aesthetic. We used mercury and seeded glass in the lighting fixtures to add a touch of vintage. Although we all love a black and white pallet, these homeowners wanted a softer, warmer, and more colorful approach to their dream of Modern Farmhouse. With that in mind, we focused in on using Navy Blue and soft, light grey tones, with touches of black and gold. These tones are mixed and matched throughout the home, making each room unique and special, while still maintaining continuity and cohesion.

Mediterranean orange two-story exterior home idea in Charleston

Moving to the master bedroom and bathroom, we created a completely new layout that enlarged the size of the vanities, added a makeup area, and added an extra large shower. The shower and tub are incorporated together in a ‘wet room’ concept, making the space feel open, connected, and cohesive. The walk in concept, with large bench and single pane of glass lead to easy cleaning and maintenance. This spa-like design concept has taken off in recent years, and we were thrilled to make this a reality for these homeowners. The mix of blues and greys is consistent with the rest of the home, while remaining a unique and personal.
