It’s been said that when you dream about a house, the basement represents your subconscious level. Perhaps that was true in the past, when basements were often neglected. But in most of today’s new builds and remodels, lower levels are becoming valuable living spaces. If you’re looking at building or renovating, opening up that lower level with sufficient light can add square footage and value to your home. In addition, having access to bright indoor areas can help combat cabin fever, which peaks in late winter. Looking at the photos here, you’d never know what you’re seeing is a lower level. That’s because a smart builder knew that bringing natural light into the space was key. Our job, in furnishing the space, was to make the most of that light. The off-white walls and light grey carpet provide a good base. A grey sectional sofa with clean, modern lines easily fits into the spacious room. It’s an ideal piece to encourage people to spend time together. The strong, forgiving linen resists staining, and like a blank canvas this true neutral allows for accessorizing with various throws and pillows depending on the season. The cream-colored throw echoes the light colors in the space, while the nubby pillow adds a textured contrast.

The design plays off of the many different elements of water, represented through the color palette, textiles, fixtures, artwork and even in the ceiling detail. Using cool colors to evoke a sense of calm and well-being, Dominique strived to create a tranquil environment where families can seek refuge from the harshness of reality. The room design emphasizes the use of natural light with minimalistic, clean-lines to elicit an uplifting and soothing environmental feel. The intent was to keep the design sophisticated and refined, while tastefully incorporating fun and whimsical elements throughout; making this safe haven, a ‘home-away-from-home’ for each family that the Ronald McDonald House serves.

When a young, hip couple from Hong Kong purchased a waterfront condominium in New Jersey, they reached out to Decor Aid for assistance in transforming their new space into a home away from home. The couple wanted the space to be modern, homey, and traditional, while also being wholly representative of their laid-back sensibility. When the couple moved in, the walls of the apartment were painted dark green, with a grey trim. The effect was dark and somber, which was exactly what they did not want their apartment to feel like. So the first thing we did was repaint the walls, which immediately gave the space a lighter, airier feel, and set the tone for the neutral palette that would be incorporated throughout the space. Besides a few pieces that the couple had brought with them from Hong Kong, there was no existing furniture to work with. The couple stressed that they wanted the option to entertain, but that they didn’t want the apartment to be designed like a party house. The dining room table perfectly captures the couple’s refined yet rustic aesthetic, but also has the ability to expand, and accommodate a few extra guests for a small dinner party. The couple wanted their space to feel distinguished, but also wanted the apartment to feel young and hip. To offset the comfortable and neutral tones, brass elements were added throughout the apartment, which added a cohesive feel, without sacrificing the desired look. The final result is a comfortable, modern, and grown-up space that this vibrant young couple can now call home.

A mid-twentieth-century family home on a busy city-wide connector with excellent public transport, and access to employment, services, and shopping. TEAL recognized an opportunity to transform the house into two contemporary dwellings by: • adding new structures: new stairs and separate entries from the street as well as a service room at the back • opening the interiors into spacious light-filled open plan living places • re-presenting the exterior of the building with new hemlock cladding integrated over the existing shingles • installing efficient new environmental control systems • reusing many of the materials, including the building envelope and chimney as part of a feature wall

This sprawling one story, modern ranch home features walnut floors and details, Cantilevered shelving and cabinetry, and stunning architectural detailing throughout.

This two-story West Ashley home was built with many traditional features like closed spaces, wood paneled-walls, brick fireplaces and dark wood kitchen cabinets, which are all representative of the year it was built. But, it was time to give the new homeowners a space they would enjoy for years to come. The den makeover included removing pocket doors and walls to open up the adjoining rooms. We also wall-mounted the TV, installed canned lights and drywalled the ceiling – removing the dated popcorn – for a more updated look. The biggest transformation was the new view from the den to the kitchen, which received a facelift of its own. With a little interior design help, the kitchen became a beautiful and elegant space equipped with a new kitchen island with granite, white subway tiles for backsplash between the white cabinets and stainless steel appliances. The hanging pendants also added a nice touch. Our favorite feature is the new Butler’s prep area, which has plenty of prep space (and a sink), open shelves, great light from the kitchen window and unique penny rounds in an Ash color for a counter-to-ceiling glamorous look.
