This stunning rooftop oasis in Manhattan’s Flatiron District is anything but flat with its swimming pool, outdoor shower, built-in kitchen and planters, and cobalt blue accent planters. All of this can be yours, too, since this spacious penthouse apartment is currently on the market for $18 million. The plantings include accents of gold, which pair strikingly with the bright blue ceramic pots. We chose a combination of structured looking plantings like Steed hollies, arborvitaes, boxwoods, and ‘Gold Sword’ yuccas, all of which create a high contrast look against the looser and more informal look of plantings like blue and white violas, gold mop cypresses, and weeping ‘Blue Atlas’ cedars. Perched atop a garage on the second floor of a newly built condo, this expansive rooftop in Carroll Gardens felt almost too vast to comprehend. The design challenge was to create intimacy and human scale. A figure-eight path guides movement through a series of distinct garden rooms. Crisp, angular planters—some sunken, others raised—establish a dynamic visual rhythm that plays with elevation. A custom pergola defines the dining zone, while a built-in bench and L-shaped sofa create a quiet corner ideal for working outdoors. Year-round visual interest was a priority, especially from the interior, so conifers and ornamental grasses provide structure through the winter months.

Photos by Staghorn NYC. A simplistic, modern approach was called for this rooftop design project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Ornamental grasses and sedum thrive on this highly exposed site while softening the Cor-Ten steel structure. This design was featured in the January 2014 issue of Dwell magazine.

On this waterfront LIC roof deck, our clients asked for a modern garden that offered protection from sun and wind. The rooftop receives a mix of sun and shade, resulting in a vibrant mix of shrubs, grasses, and trees. The beach style planting is drought tolerant.
