A two-story restaurant and bar in the heart of Rochester Hills approached Horizon Interior Design with an exciting design brief to pay homage to the American-style food they served with a 1940's retro redesign. The new tenants had some great ideas for fresh paint, décor, a mural of a vintage plane, and a female pilot in a pinup style reminiscent of the 1940s. They wanted to keep their flooring and furnishings as is, challenging us to create a harmonious design while incorporating what they already had. Using vintage magazines, newspapers, and posters from the 1940s, as well as replicas of old décor and wall art, we brought the 40's back to this commercial restaurant's interior design! Adding deep red and white accents to the navy blue walls created a patriotic feel, while a hand-painted distressed American flag hung over the bar for that extra touch of 40's magic. We painted a magnificent wall mural of a jet and pilot, applied shiplap to the front of the bar and an accent wall, and then decorated it with vintage tin signs from the 1940's. We installed luxurious vintage-style chandeliers on both floors, illuminated with Edison bulbs to warm up the dining areas and bring a sense of grandeur to the space. Upon completion, walking into the restaurant felt like being transported back to this beautiful decade, attracting clientele to experience something special. Gugel Photography

This custom design and space created an intimate space for private parties, but also beautifully showcases the Restaurant's wine selection in both Vintageview racking and custom stained rustic redwood racking. Some unique features of this cellar include its custom fumed white oak stain, the show stopping glass wall looking in to the cellar, horizontal bottle display, large format bottle storage, and The Berkel Cured Meat slicer used for private parties and wine tasting events. This custom wine cellar was built in the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina in a contemporary style designed for intermittent usage. This modern, beautiful custom wine cellars is decked out with VintageView racking, as well as under the counter redwood racking with a custom fumed oak stain. The Rolling Ladder ensures easy access to all wine storage throughout the room. Wine refrigerators have been installed under the opposite counter to keep white wines cooler than the room temperature. The custom design for this project called for bin storage. Wine Case storage options in this cellar work perfectly for a restaurant of this magnitude. With the creation of Pamplemousse Grille, Chef Strauss has turned from the world of “Chef to the Stars” to creating food that he loves to eat and serve to “family and friends.” Since its debut, Pamplemousse Grille has received many local & national awards including “Best Restaurant, People’s Choice” San Diego Home & Gardens; “Best New Restaurant”, “Best Caterer”, & “San Diego’s Best Chef” San Diego Magazine, Zagat Rated #1 Restaurant in San Diego for three consecutive years, and 2008 San Diego Nice Guy of the Year. East Coast-bred, Chef was among nine out of eight hundred applicants to receive a Culinary Apprenticeship at the Greenbriar Hotel Culinary Educational Program in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia, where he earned the Gold Medal for Culinary Showmanship. At age 23, Jeffrey became the executive chef of the Glorious Cafe in Washington D. C. His patience and dedication allowed Glorious Cafe to begin strongly and quickly gain respect throughout the Beltway. Shortly thereafter, he was persuaded to relocate to New York City to join Glorious Foods legendary catering operation. Throughout his nine years at Glorious Food (1985-1993), Jeffrey would take leaves of absence to concentrate on higher learning in some of Europe’s finest Michelin-rated restaurants. Upon his return from this culinary powerhouses in Europe, Jeffrey would transfer his learning into teaching. My ‘professional father,’ Chef Jean-Claude Nédélec at Glorious Food, taught me the power and art of food presentation,” Chef Strauss recalls. “And the renowned Chefs Roger Vergé at Le Moulin De Mougins and Albert Roux at Le Gavroche in London taught me the beauty of food.” Jeffrey spent a year with Chef Albert, serving as saucier and chef tourant of his Michelin 3 Star restaurant.
