This one-acre site at a 120-foot elevation overlooking Rustic Canyon has breathtaking, panoramic views. Though the California Monterrey colonial style house was built in 1933 for the silent film star Billie Dove, every aspect of the garden is new except for the Eucalyptus. A long interwoven hedge acts as a green plinth transforming the 150-wide house into a giant sculptural element. Giant raw steel planters created in homage to sculptor Richard Serra repeat this theme. The front garden is patterned after the Court of the Myrtles at the Alhambra in Seville, Spain, while the rear garden embraces the expansive view and is toned in aqueous colored succulent plantings that tie into the rectangular swimming pool. The muted color palette focuses attention on the contrasting plant textures and sculptural qualities, from arcing white Agaves, giant blue Fan Palms, and sinuous Eucalyptus. The south facing kitchen courtyard showcases indigenous California pottery materials and an extensive collection of Hollywood movie garden furniture memorabilia. Photos by Jorge Rafael

This is a DIY project. Customer purchase the medium color kit and did all the work in a weekend. Friday he clean and stain the floor with Honey color stain, Saturday he apply the SealGreen E10 Epoxy Sealer, and Sunday he apply a final coat of SealGreen Poly-StepGurad with antiskid. Monday he was able to park his car and enjoy his basement. All the product he used were environmentally safe and have no toxic smell or solvents.

Aquadisia by David Young of DWY Landscape Architects, with David Lowe, Interior Designer, David K. Lowe Interior Design
Situated on a barrier island overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, this landscape is a dazzling mix of geometric form, carefully manicured lawns and the shaggy manes of numerous bamboo trees. The landscape architects collaborated closely with the owner to create a garden that takes full advantage of the site’s location, views and climate. The site’s sequence of designed spaces carefully balances large but simple geometric shapes with a well calibrated plant palette. Entry to the house is gained via a concrete walkway that passes over a water garden and through a glass cube flanked by marble Foo Dogs. The water garden continues to a glass-enclosed lower-level where a waterwall provides the perfect backdrop for a beachside spa and fire pit. The experience of this exquisite landscape is not limited to the ground; a wooden terrace allows full view of the Gulf and a new spiral glass staircase leads to a crow’s nest overlooking the property.

Restoration of the Goodrum House & Garden by Spencer Tunnell II and Matt Sussman of Tunnell + Tunnell Landscape Architecture (TTLA)
A prominent central driveway punctuates the front lawn, guiding visitors toward the exquisitely restored house and inner grounds. Completed in 1932 and recently restored to its original period design, this English Regency-style home was designed by renowned architect Philip Trammell Shutze for May Patterson Goodrum, the widow of a wealthy Atlanta businessman.
Originally built on five acres in the Buckhead neighborhood of north Atlanta, the stucco exterior and geometric design of the house and landscape emulates the grand architectural concepts popularized during the reign of King George IV in early 19th century England. Combining their professional expertise, the site’s architect and landscape architect worked closely throughout the restoration process, drawing on the home’s original design plans, historic photographs, and interviews with former neighbors to ensure that the project accurately reflected Shutze’s intent. An archaeological excavation and detailed paint analysis provided further insight.
Restoring the property’s grounds required recreating lost elements of the period-style landscape, including stunning allées and large boxwood and perennial gardens framed by restored garden walls. The expansive lawns, mixed hedges, and dense oak tree canopy were brought back, returning this distinguished home to its former glory. Photos courtesy Tunnell + Tunnell Landscape Architecture

Tilt Turn windows and doors can be combined in numerous configurations with casement, awning, and fixed windows as they utilize the same profile system. The seamless integration of windows provides a uniform appearance and customization beyond compare.
Tilt turn windows are a very unique and functional European window, applicable in endless applications. These windows are quickly gaining popularity in the United States. These windows have been manufactured for almost a hundred years, starting out in Europe in the early 1900′s. The beauty of a tilt turn window is its dual action. The window will open like a casement window and will tilt in at the top. Each window is customized to your exact specifications. Tilt turn doors are also available; the window is capable of being manufactured to fit large openings.
Glancing at the window, one cannot tell that the window has two functions. The window will swing inward when opened like a casement, with a screen on the window’s exterior. The window can then be hinged at the bottom and open inward at the top. Both actions are activated by the turn of a lever, which controls all the mechanics within the frame.
There are great benefits to these operations. Ample fresh air can pass into the room when opened like a casement. When the window is open at the top, it functions as a safety precaution. Small children cannot climb up the window and fall through it as in a traditional double hung window. The same function prevents intruders from entering a room. There is simply no way to climb up the window and fit through the small opening; but ventilation is still possible.
A tilt and turn window can be used in both residential and commercial applications. The window can be utilized in almost any room within a residential home. A home’s exterior is a great place for the windows as are sunrooms and pool enclosures. Commercial applications include restaurants, office buildings, and high rise apartments. A condominium on the thirtieth floor cannot typically be cleaned, except by a professional cleaning service; tilt turn windows open inward and allow for complete cleaning of the window units with out calling costly professionals.
Modern PVC windows are suitable for many types of buildings. Weather it's a historic building, detached private residence, office building or a multi-family house, stylish window profiles can achieve consistency of design between the building's exterior and interior walls.
PVC profile is made from UV stabilized materials protecting windows from solar expositon and discoloration. This problem is often observed with standard vinyl windows. In addition, our profiles are reinforced with galvanized steel, which makes them exceptionally durable. This feature is important for large windows, which require greater strength and stability.
High thermal insulation of PVC material combined with multi chamber profile structure ensures the highest comfort of living. In fact uPVC windows have the highest energy rating in the US outperforming all brands of wooden windows. Double or triple pane glass have the added benefit of being extremely effective in deadening sound. It makes PVC windows the best choice for buildings or homes located close to railroads or noisy roads

Saturday June 27, 2:30 to 4:00pm | Bluemont
Piedmont Retreat by Jay Graham, FASLA of Graham Landscape Architecture, with Ralph Cunningham, FAIA
Nestled at the base of the Shenandoah foothills in Virginia, this 178-acre site, once used for agriculture, has been transformed by the current owners into an attractive country retreat. The expansive landscape surrounding the residence incorporates Modernist design elements while acknowledging the site’s vibrant agricultural history. Visitors enter the property along an extended driveway, aligned to perfectly capture views of the nearby foothills before meandering through a wooded area featuring a beautiful array of stone walls and mature oak trees that terminate abruptly in a clearing, offering guests their first glimpse of the main residence. Pathways, and terraces, encircle the home where a wedge-shaped entry garden beckons, drawing visitors through the front door. Other spaces include the Tapestry and Master’s gardens, which were designed to introduce a diverse palette of plants to the property, direct views, and provide an additional splash of color and personality to the outdoor area. Adjacent to the home and bounded by natural boulders found on site, a turf platform provides flat ground for outdoor games. Beyond the lawn, a newly established meadow completes the design plan as it draws attention outward to more natural aspects of the environment, a pond, and restored woodlands. Saturday June 20, 10:00 to 11:30am | Manhattan
Midtown Sky Garden by Hank White, FASLA, and Aaron Booher of HMWhite
This excursion to a spectacular workplace landscape will take visitors up high above the busy streets of Manhattan. The award-winning, 6,500 square-foot terrace of the Midtown Manhattan Sky Garden takes advantage of panoramic skyline views while providing an intimate garden backdrop to the mid-century-modern building’s newly-renovated interior workspace. Richly textured and seasonally diverse plantings include a dense blanket of drought-tolerant prairie grasses, wildflower perennials, and spring flowering bulbs, punctuated by flowering Crab Apple trees. At twilight, the garden evolves into a subtle stage set of textured plantings, rustling softly against the glow of a frosted glass parapet rail—a soothing space where workers can escape the conference room or the electrifying noise of the dense urban environment. The roof garden’s biophilic design has elevated employees’ well-being, productivity, and morale. Photo copyright C. Taylor Crothers Photography

One Westover by William Bibb and Brian McDonald of Archiverde, LLC, with Weldon Turner, Turner | Boaz Architecture
This stately private property, originally owned by the philanthropic Rhodes family for more than 100 years, was completely renovated by the current owner from 2010-2013. The project is a major collaboration between the landscape architect and architect, both of whom will participate in the Dialogue. The landscape is just over an acre, and its design is based on centerlines and relationships of the architecture. The arrival is marked by a sweeping walkway that runs along the edge of a grand central lawn and stately groves of pond cypress trees frame the house on both sides. At the rear of the home an open courtyard holds an elaborate swimming pool complete with fountain, infinity weir and shallow water ledge. An adjacent fire pit is surrounded by four live oak trees. The pool and fire pit area were designed based upon the centerline of the master bedroom. At the basement area the lower courtyard centers on the large library windows. Here lacey Japanese maple trees set in large pots provide a delicate canopy. To the east a veranda overlooks a small lawn area backed by pre-existing woodland and a creek bed enhanced by new native plantings.

Saturday May 16, 10:30am to 12:00pm | Saratoga
Blackwell Hillside Garden by Rebecca Dye and Hank Helbush of Design Focus International
Register: https://tclf.org/event/garden-dialogues-northern-california-2015
Each detail of this spectacular Saratoga landscape was considered with its hillside site in mind, from the size of the pool to the choice of antique stone masonry. Working closely with the owner, the landscape architects created a series of intimate garden spaces on three terraces. At the top of the site, entertainment is the name of the game where a bocce ball court and a fire pit take advantage of the site’s commanding views of the Santa Clara Valley. Below the house, a jewel-like pool captures the eye, with its intricate glass-tile and bronze water jets. At its end, a seating area and fireplace are shaded by an arbor covered with climbing roses, adding both fragrance and hue. Visitors descend a series of terraced stone stairs set into the hillside, punctuated by raised beds of strawberries, lavender, artichokes, and citrus. A formal parterre flower garden on the terrace is replanted periodically with colorful blooms in acknowledgment of the changing seasons.

Saturday August 8, 9:00 to 10:30am | Denver
Cranmer Park Residence by Gretchen Wilson and Laurel Raines of Dig Studio
Perched on a high point of Denver’s Cranmer Park, one of the great park landmarks of the Mile-High City, this designed landscape complements and enhances the architectural aesthetic of the home; a stucco-clad Italianate mansion built in 1917 by renowned architect Jacques Benedict and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The landscape, designed and constructed in three phases over a twelve-year period from 1998 to 2010, creates a functional outdoor living space that supports the owners’ contemporary lifestyle while remaining sensitive to the original architectural vision and elegance of the home. An Italianate garden, framed by the home’s loggias and a stunning boxwood garden, reinforce the design of the historic property. In contrast, the addition of a pool house and outdoor spa area add a modern touch. A linear lap pool, fountain, patio area, basketball court, and fire pit contrast with elements of the earlier landscape, providing a relaxing private outdoor space with spectacular views of Cranmer Park, and the great Rocky Mountains that dominate the Denver skyline.
