"We chose silver travertine in a 'Tumbled' color palette with variations of cream and brown," says Lisha. "So we had those two colors, plus grey, to pull from." The 7-foot-long, stucco outdoor kitchen island's countertops are also noteworthy - Absolute Black granite in a leathered finish offering a modern look and a dark grey hue that works perfectly with the color palette. The kitchen island also houses an RCS 30-inch grill and fridge. The seating area includes a sectional couch, coffee table, two swivel chairs and two ottomans - all from Restoration Hardware. "We used Restoration Hardware's Biscayne sectional, swivel chairs and ottomans in gray, with textured linen weave in Sand and cushions and peacock accent pillows in gray," says Lisha. The coffee table is made of solid teak with a concrete top - as is the matching side table. "We added a console table, also in teak, behind the sofa. And for accents, we added three Amalfi lanterns from Restoration Hardware in weathered zinc." A Sunbrella® Heathered area rug (in Gray) was added to anchor the space and visually tie it together. Mauve was all the rage in the late 1980s when the clients of Arlene Ladegaard, founder and principal designer at Design Connections, Inc., built this custom home in the suburb of Olathe, Kan. Although a master bedroom on the first floor seemed unusual at the time, it turned out to be just the ticket for the clients. With its beautiful acreage surrounding the home, our clients had decided to stay there as they aged. Because the clients were graduates of Kansas State University where the school colors are purple and silver, they asked for purple touches in the master bathroom. Arlene and her design team complied with taupe 4”by 18” tiles placed vertically and accented by purple glass mosaics in the built-in shampoo shelves, as well as in the back splash above the Cambria Quartz countertops. A heated floor with 12” by 24” textured tiles gave an updated look to the space that would also be inviting on a cold winter morning. Design Connection Inc. provided Auto Cad drawings and elevations for design details, tile, cabinets, painting, installations and project management.

If we were masters of our own high school, we would create a course in Decorative Geometry. Since our principals have failed to hand over the keys, we stick to designing inspired light fixtures. Occasion is a study of hitting the right modern angles with some added inspiration from Torii gates, a universal sign of welcome in Asia. Mauve was the haute fashion color of the 1980’s when our clients custom-built this home on acreage. The before pictures feature mauve moiré wallpaper and gold accents, but what most dated was the low 30 inches cabinet height that was popular at that time. Arlene Ladegaard, founder and principal designer of Design Connection, Inc., in Overland Park, Kan., had already updated many other rooms in this home. The clients contacted her for the powder room and master bathroom. Arlene and the clients decided to leave in place the marble tile floor that had been installed a few years back. As graduates of Kansas State University (with school colors of purple and silver), the clients loved purple and had accents of it in many other rooms in the home. For the powder room, the clients desired wallpaper in the purple tones and Arlene found the perfect, fashion-forward floral purple and silver wallpaper. Arlene and her design team specified a new standard 36-inch-high cabinet and Cambria quartz countertops. A mosaic backsplash carried hints purple accents and the plumbing fixtures and oval mirror above the counter in brushed nickel captured the silver highlights. The clients loved the new look that included a Kohler ADA height toilet. There is no more bending down to sit down! The design of this new powder room blends with the traditional style of the home and works well with the surrounding spaces. Design Connection, Inc. provided cabinet design and specifications, wallpaper, countertops, plumbing fixtures, lighting, installation and project management.

When asked who most uses the outdoor kitchen, smoker, the pool house kitchen and the wood-fired oven, Lonnie doesn’t hesitate to answer. “My son and I are the cooks,” he says. On any given occasion, Lonnie and his son, Scott, principal for Blue Valley Southwest High School, might be found marinating, searing and smoking rib roast, pulled pork, salmon or slabs of ribs. Of course wood-fired pizzas are an enduring savory favorite, especially for the couple’s eight grandchildren. “We roll the dough out on the island and let everyone make their own pizzas,” says Lonnie. “It’s like a big assembly line.” He says the pizzas take about five minutes to cook in the Chicago Brick Oven which can heat up to 700 degrees. “Once you heat this oven up, it can hold heat anywhere from 200 to 400 degrees for up to 20 hours,” says Lonnie.

This project was during my junior year of high school where I was enrolled in Interior Design for the whole school year. In this class we learned about the Interior parts of a building and how to apply each type of floor plan in a building: electrical, plumbing, ect. This picture is of the first level floor plan. Here on either side there are classrooms for each grade, specifically 2 per grade. In the middle of the floor plan is the cafeteria/common space. To add more of a fun and creative element to the cafeteria, I added folding walls to separate every 2 lunch benches, but they can also be moved around due to being on wheels. The front office, that consists of the principals office, bathrooms and the nurses office is on the 'bottom' of this picture.

The Greens at Woodland Hills features 212 rolling acres and the perfect neighborhood to begin building your custom home. This peaceful setting, located in the Saydel school district, delivers quick access to I-80 and I-35 for commuters headed to downtown Des Moines or north to Ames. Retail shopping and Saylorville Lake are nearby too. The Greens at Woodland Hills is just south of Woodland Hills Golf Course, on Northeast 66th Street between Northeast 14th Street and Northwest Second Avenue. The Greens at Woodland Hills is a Conservation Community, taking into account environmental principals and green spaces. Based on the premise that nature knows best, our conservation living designs protect natural features such as woodlands and stream buffers. To protect these areas, impervious surfaces such as streets and driveways are reduced and a more natural stormwater management system is used. Each of our Conservation Communities provides approximately seven times the amount of public, open space than what is found in a typical development. These areas, usually planted with native flowers and grasses, are beautiful and functional. They provide aesthetic value, adequate stormwater conveyance, distribution of the water flow and natural filtration of pollutants.

This mosaic tile was created on an existing ugly traffic barrier; the theme was suggested by the principal of the school. There's an abstracted Ohlone basket, canoe, and native butterfly and local egret on the other side.
