Interior Designer: MOTIV Interiors LLC Photographer: Sam Angel Photography Design Challenge: This 8 year-old boy and girl were outgrowing their existing setup and needed to update their rooms with a plan that would carry them forward into middle school and beyond. In addition to gaining storage and study areas, could these twins show off their big personalities? Absolutely, we said! MOTIV Interiors tackled the rooms of these youngsters living in Nashville's 12th South Neighborhood and created an environment where the dynamic duo can learn, create, and grow together for years to come. Design Solution: In his room, we wanted to continue the feature wall fun, but with a different approach. Since our young explorer loves outer space, being a boy scout, and building with legos, we created a dynamic geometric wall that serves as the backdrop for our young hero’s control center. We started with a neutral mushroom color for the majority of the walls in the room, while our feature wall incorporated a deep indigo and sky blue that are as classic as your favorite pair of jeans. We focused on indoor air quality and used Sherwin Williams’ Duration paint in a satin sheen, which is a scrubbable/no-VOC coating. We wanted to create a great reading corner, so we placed a comfortable denim lounge chair next to the window and made sure to feature a self-portrait created by our young client. For night time reading, we included a super-stellar floor lamp with white globes and a sleek satin nickel finish. Metal details are found throughout the space (such as the lounge chair base and nautical desk clock), and lend a utilitarian feel to the room. In order to balance the metal and keep the room from feeling too cold, we also snuck in woven baskets that work double-duty as decorative pieces and functional storage bins. The large north-facing window got the royal treatment and was dressed with a relaxed roman shade in a shiitake linen blend. We added a fabulous fabric trim from F. Schumacher and echoed the look by using the same fabric for the bolster on the bed. Royal blue bedding brings a bit of color into the space, and is complimented by the rich chocolate wood tones seen in the furniture throughout. Additional storage was a must, so we brought in a glossy blue storage unit that can accommodate legos, encyclopedias, pinewood derby cars, and more! Comfort and creativity converge in this space, and we were excited to get a big smile when we turned it over to its new commander.

Replacement like-for-like period style timber windows from the Mumford & Wood Conservation™ range have been installed in the thermal upgrade programme of St Margaret’s junior girls’ boarding house at the famous Cheltenham Ladies’ College. Other boarding houses at the school have also been refurbished in recent years with window replacements by Mumford & Wood. Manufactured entirely in Great Britain, Conservation™ windows and doors are made from clear grade and engineered Siberian Larch, a slow growing and robust species, which achieves maximum strength and stability in fine joinery. Made to the exacting standards of the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance scheme, Conservation™ windows and doors are BRE A+ rated and achieve excellent levels of acoustic and thermal performance that exceed the requirement of current Building Regulations’. They carry the BSI Kitemark and are Energy Saving Trust listed. Products are supplied to site with three coats of high quality, spray-applied, micro-porous paint, or stain, as standard. Heritage paint colours and a dual-finish are also available.

This bathroom needed help as it was tired, dated and cramped! The vanity area was open to the master bedroom and sandwiched between a closet and existing bathroom wall. Behind the bathroom wall, was a second sink, a small walk-in shower and the commode. A poorly placed linen closet ate into the area and there was a soffit over the shower adding to the cramped feeling. The ceiling was cluttered with old-school heating lamps, flush-mount fixtures and ventilation grills. The “movie star” lighting meant to add some glamour only made the bathroom feel dated and sad. Our clients wanted to bring this bathroom to life. We built a wall and added a door between the bedroom and bathroom to ensure more privacy and define the space. In addition, we removed the wall separating the actual bathroom and vanity area to make the master bathroom larger. The linen closet was also taken out so the shower could be expanded significantly. Our homeowner had recently suffered a knee injury so they were looking for future solutions that would work for them as they continued to age. We made the shower large enough to include a bench and installed a handheld sprayer located near the seat. Shower walls were reinforced so that when the day came that a grab bar was needed, they would be ready. We added a tall cabinet that featured two, deep rollouts and interior shelving to keep linens and bathroom supplies organized. Beneath the sinks, we included rollout drawers so items would not get lost in those dark areas under the plumbing. Everything that had been cluttering the ceiling was removed including the shower soffit and heat lamp. With those gone, we added evenly-spaced, recessed ceiling lights to help brighten the space making it safer and more practical. We chose a custom blue-green paint for the cabinets which was understated enough to provide a sense of serenity while still offering a splash of color to help liven up the room. Walnut-framed mirrors added a touch of warmth and the patterned floor tile made the whole room fun! An old bathroom came alive!

I also have a extra sunlight binder and I have put everything she has done in that binder worksheets poems, printables and I will add her attendance work sheet when we finish then this box will be put up for when kainen is old enough, On the floor is a organizer for craft supplies, then the next shelf from the bottom is mckylees Beads It has beads and string and stuff to make jewelry with. then the diaper box covered in blue fabric is things she has made for school this year that she plays with. like the can phone, tornado in a jar, etc. and her house she made the next shelf with Green and blue baskets which come from the dollar tree the Green has yarn and paper plates and the pink basket has tons of color paper, the big purple tote is play doh, and a play mat and tools for the play doh also a dry eraser covers with play doh printables tucked into them, The pink shower caddy comes in handy during homeschool crafts it holds are glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, and we fill it up with the things we need for the craft and take it to the kitchen table, the top shelf starting from the bottom left is a purple box of craft supples from popsicles sticks to pipe cleaners and glitter, the top purple box is a science box it has magnets and goggles and tongs, magnifying glasses rubber bands, etc, the big box is a build your own fort kit in the middle is paint and paint brushes, then the beloved board games,!

The client's purchased this home with a gorgeous lot but needing a total gut renovation and addition. We brought the mechanicals, insulation, and electrical up-to-speed along with renovating the interior and exterior of the home. A few of the interesting features seen here are a reclaimed wood island-top from a local train station, the cabinets custom-made with a local cabinet maker, a copper ceiling above the island in the kitchen, a large farmhouse sink in the kitchen, and a table from reclaimed wood. We also installed custom built-ins and window seats for the children's rooms. All of this was built for the client on-site.

New lighting with vintage fixtures from Rejuvenation. Shallow cabinet storage on exterior wall houses drop zone functions (backpacks, purses, coats, etc.), school and art supplies and kitchen items. This door is the day-to-day entrance into the home by the family. Long leaf pine bench at window sill matches the owners' table and adds to seating options. Local artisan crafted wallpaper by Galbraith & Paul was installed in the Mud Room to blend better with the other rooms. Function was most important as this Foyer also serves as a Mud Room and must hold school and sporting supplies for three active children.
