What used to be a dark commercial space with claustrophobic offices on the third floor and a completely separate attic was transformed into one spacious open floor apartment with a sleeping loft. Transparency through from front to back is a key intention, giving visual access to the street trees in front, the play of sunlight in the back and allowing multiple modes of direct and indirect natural lighting. A single cabinet “box” with hidden hardware and secret doors runs the length of the building, containing kitchen, bathroom, services and storage. All kitchen appliances are hidden when not in use. Doors to the left and right of the work surface open fully for access to wall oven and refrigerator. Functional and durable stainless-steel accessories for the kitchen and bath are custom designs and fabricated locally. The sleeping loft stair is both foreground and background, heavy and light: the white guardrail is a single 3/8” steel plate, the treads and risers are folded perforated steel.

The key was finding the perfect balance with the dark wainscot and light materials for contrast In the tub area, the design included adding an angled ceiling on the left to balance the existing angled ceiling on the right. This created symmetry as well as a lovely nook for the tub. In the shower, a unique niche built out of marble offers a lovely spot for storing products. This niche is paired with a dramatic slab on the wall, creating a stunning focal point. The unique detail of Calacatta Gold marble on the floors mimics the herringbone-patterned wood floor in the master bedroom. Marble panels on the mirror walls offer contrast to the dark wainscot panels and create a lovely backdrop for the polished nickel sconces. Adding the tower in the corner allowed the opportunity to create hidden storage for electric toothbrushes with outlets inside. Touch latches keep these a secret!

The main question was determining the appropriate height for the cabinetry, considering the scale and proportion of the space, the walk-through to adjoining rooms, window heights, and the height of the refrigerator. Solution: By carefully analyzing these factors, we were able to create cabinetry that perfectly scaled to the grand dimensions of the room. Pianoforte is a musical term referring to the variations in volume or loudness. Inspired by our clients’ love of all things with keys, the residence interprets the masculine form as ‘loud’ and the play of light as ‘soft’. The site required a strong response to the very active 1st Avenue to the south while transparency and perforations soften the form along Oneida Street. The L-shaped plan addresses the active corner while providing protection to the rear outdoor landscape. The entry becomes a gateway into this secret garden. Light breathes life into the living space in the morning and pours into the kitchen from the southern clerestory above. Our client, who currently plays the organ at weekly services, has working organ pipes that surround the fireplace enclosure.
