You’d never know by looking at this stunning cottage that the project began by raising the entire home six feet above the foundation. The Birchwood field team used their expertise to carefully lift the home in order to pour an entirely new foundation. With the base of the home secure, our craftsmen moved indoors to remodel the home’s kitchen and bathrooms. The sleek kitchen features gray, custom made inlay cabinetry that brings out the detail in the one of a kind quartz countertop. Villa Spectrum is located in Umalas in south Bali and offers amazing rice field views from the second floor, a secure ground floor garden and pool area filled with tropical plants and flowers. The villa comprises four bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and high-quality furnishings throughout. Spectrum was built to exacting modern living standards and uses the best materials, with sirap roofing, marble floors in the living room, teak wooden floors in the bedrooms, walk-in robes in every bedroom, a modern kitchen, and granite features in the kitchen and bathrooms.

The splendid Greywalls double-swing gate is strictly aluminum and provides the look of a classic white-picket fence but without the worry of wood rot. This sag-free gate features 6” steel support posts, ball-bearing hinges, and a coating of aliphatic urethane paint.

Each Chilton cocktail table features a shape and grain as unique as the tree it came from. A solid slab of wood is sanded and finished, braced with butterfly joints in any areas requiring extra support, and secured to a hand-welded natural steel or walnut base. The best part? You can choose the exact top that you like best, ensuring that each Chilton is one-of-a-kind.

In the primary bath, all of the original features had been removed, except for the low sloped MCM ceiling that was prominently interrupted by a rectangular AC soffit that was added on later. We relocated the AC ducting to vent through the floor instead, and once again revealed the bath’s iconic low sloped triangular ceiling. Then, we began re-creating the new MCM space from the floor up. We widened the original primary bath by 2’ to accommodate an enclosed toilet room, at the request of the homeowners. This was quite a feat, as it required structural engineering to relocate one vertical steel column that interfered with the new toilet room layout. The new 14’ tall steel column, which supported part of the steel roof trusses, had to be extended through the home’s bathroom floor and into a cave underground secured by a concrete pier. Oh, did I mention that this home has a cave under part of it? Haha—when I say that this home was a challenge to remodel, I do mean it was a CHALLENGE.

Designed to embrace an extensive and unique art collection including sculpture, paintings, tapestry, and cultural antiquities, this modernist home located in north Scottsdale’s Estancia is the quintessential gallery home for the spectacular collection within. The primary roof form, “the wing” as the owner enjoys referring to it, opens the home vertically to a view of adjacent Pinnacle peak and changes the aperture to horizontal for the opposing view to the golf course. Deep overhangs and fenestration recesses give the home protection from the elements and provide supporting shade and shadow for what proves to be a desert sculpture. The restrained palette allows the architecture to express itself while permitting each object in the home to make its own place. The home, while certainly modern, expresses both elegance and warmth in its material selections including canterra stone, chopped sandstone, copper, and stucco. "The owner wanted to softly highlight the architectural features - nothing over the top - and improve visibility. The home sits on top of a hill near a wooded area. The secluded property was very dark at night," explains Coleman, outdoor lighting designer at McKay Landscape Lighting. The house pairs rustic and modern elements, "We wanted the lighting to naturally blend and enhance the different textures and elements they picked." Coleman strategically uplit the house, creating unique shadowing effects while enhancing the beautiful stonework, wood cedar siding, and clean pitched roofline. A spotlight accents the stone chimney.
