UserThe private home, reminiscent of Maine lodges and family camps, was designed to be a sanctuary for the family and their many relatives. Lassel Architects worked closely with the owners to meet their needs and wishes and collaborated thoroughly with the builder during the construction process to provide a meticulously crafted home.
The open-concept plan, framed by a unique timber frame inspired by Greene & Greene’s designs, provides large open spaces for entertaining with generous views to the lake, along with sleeping lofts that comfortably host a crowd overnight. Each of the family members' bedrooms was configured to provide a view to the lake. The bedroom wings pivot off a staircase which winds around a natural tree trunk up to a tower room with 360-degree views of the surrounding lake and forest. All interiors are framed with natural wood and custom-built furniture and cabinets reinforce daily use and activities.
The family enjoys the home throughout the entire year; therefore careful attention was paid to insulation, air tightness and efficient mechanical systems, including in-floor heating. The house was integrated into the natural topography of the site to connect the interior and exterior spaces and encourage an organic circulation flow. Solar orientation and summer and winter sun angles were studied to shade in the summer and take advantage of passive solar gain in the winter.
Equally important was the use of natural ventilation. The design takes into account cross-ventilation for each bedroom while high and low awning windows to allow cool air to move through the home replacing warm air in the upper floor. The tower functions as a private space with great light and views with the advantage of the Venturi effect on warm summer evenings.

Quinn Craughwell Landscape ArchitectsSet within the grazing fields of an equestrian center, this estate is both a retreat and a playground for an active family. Working with a design team of architects, interior designers, and contractors, we began the project by siting the house within the fields so that it has privacy, views of the horses, and level areas for a large arrival court and rear garden. With three children of various ages, the client was focused on creating a private retreat that would also be a source of entertainment for the children and their friends. A pool, spa, and sports court function equally well for entertaining all ages. A formal arrangement of landscape features is softened with layered seasonal plantings, including a multitude of trees that have been planted to re-establish a native canopy.

Internationally recognized as an “innovative green project,” the award-winning Urban Reserve transformed a 10-acre site that had been an illegal landfill for more than 50 years into an exquisite Modernist community. In 2004, Urban Edge Developers in Dallas purchased the tract to construct a sustainable community, engaging landscape architect Kevin Sloan Studio and architects including Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. The refined aesthetics and careful grooming are equaled by environmentally sensitive details: the main street is a continuous biofilter; storm water is conveyed into rain gardens, separated by parking; cypress and reed plants filter water to sedimentation ponds for low-velocity drip irrigation. Concrete fragments and steel beams left over from its previous use as a landfill have been repurposed as “bricolage” for pavements and terraces. Black Oak Construction, LLCBlack Oak Construction and Collective Design took our clients’ visions and turned their unfinished basement into a distinctive entertainment hub. Our clients came to us with a large collection of skateboards and equally as impressive collection of rock and roll posters they wanted to display. At the time, they didn’t have any real area to entertain friends and family. They wanted a Gallery/Lounge area, Theater/ Billard’s area a half bath and a workout room.
The basement was a little dark. Existing windows on the East and South side were removed and replaced with a bank of 7 windows which then allowed an unobstructed view of their lake. The windows were trimmed to hide motorized blinds used to block the light when movies or sporting events were being watched on one of the flat screens.
As you walk in the entertainment room, there is a custom-designed tray ceiling with a lighted display constructed to hold 42 of the skateboards. The challenge was in hanging the skateboards in it. Originally it was to be metal but it didn’t securely hold a skateboard. Our carpenters used bolts and magnets to solve the problem and hold them securely. It turned out to be the focal point of the entire area.
Centered in the rec room is a bar area with visual site to most of the rec room. The front of the bar is trimmed uniquely to add dimension. The cabinets above the bar have a lighted linear wine rack.
There are two comfortable areas to watch a game or music video. The homeowners brought in a KC Chiefs theme in the furnishings. One wall was dedicated to jerseys, memorabilia and stadium seats. Behind the large red couch is a custom metal sofa table that spells out CHIEFS.
The workout room has a waterproof floating floor. By adding nearly frameless glass doors going in, the room feels like a part of the rest of the rec room.
Framed rare posters hang throughout the entertainment area. A custom “skateboard” table is in one of the sitting areas. Pinball machines were added to provide another form of play.
When finished, this was not your usual rec room by any means. This was a client ordered, construction delivered entertainment setting sure to be enjoyed for years to come.

Marcus Gleysteen ArchitectsCove House is a contemporary shoreline sanctuary in the lake region of New Hampshire. The wooded property, which includes several accessory outbuildings and an existing guest cottage, makes up a private micro-cove. The new modern house and existing traditional cottage turn both toward the lake and to each other. Thoughtful siting and landscape architecture establish a connective flow between the two residences, with a notched stone courtyard in the house inviting visitors to go back and forth.
Inspired by the craftsmanship of an antique mahogany powerboat, Cove House pursues architectural quality and beauty at the highest level. The design uses materiality, texture, and daylight to balance livability and artistry. The main entrance leads through a slot-canyon-like hall where a sequence of monumental granite walls reveals a glorious, light-filled living room. A steel moment frame spanning two levels imparts unobstructed panoramic views of the lake.
The magnetism of the New Hampshire waterfront is equalized by a coordinated series of openings, which attune daylight throughout the interior. Large sliding glass doors and windows draw light through the courtyard and into the home’s core – a bright and lofty kitchen. Below the kitchen, a walkout patio illuminates a refined wine-tasting room.
Near the front entry, a gracious granite and steel stair delivers daylight to each level though open risers and glass balustrades. Skylights draw light from above and cast grazing shadows against the textured tile walls of the upper bathrooms.

Better BuildersCompleted in 2015, the Othello House was designed by PRDG Architecture + Design and built by Better Builders as a striking example of modern living in West Seattle. Though the homeowners chose not to pursue formal certification, the project was built to meet the rigorous standards of a Five-Star Built Green™ home.
From the ground up, sustainability and style were equally prioritized. The build preserved native vegetation, retained mature trees on-site, exceeded Washington State Energy Code requirements, and recycled over 70% of construction waste by weight. Recycled-content materials were thoughtfully incorporated throughout, reinforcing the home’s eco-conscious foundation.
Large windows on all sides flood the interiors with natural light, while the surrounding landscaping is designed to highlight lush greenery and native plantings. Quinn Craughwell Landscape ArchitectsSet within the grazing fields of an equestrian center, this estate is both a retreat and a playground for an active family. Working with a design team of architects, interior designers, and contractors, we began the project by siting the house within the fields so that it has privacy, views of the horses, and level areas for a large arrival court and rear garden. With three children of various ages, the client was focused on creating a private retreat that would also be a source of entertainment for the children and their friends. A pool, spa, and sports court function equally well for entertaining all ages. A formal arrangement of landscape features is softened with layered seasonal plantings, including a multitude of trees that have been planted to re-establish a native canopy.
